thE art of staInED-GLass
Born in the Middle Ages, the art of stained-glass
has elected Chartres as its capital. Today, the art of
stained-glass window making is still very much alive,
thanks to the many studios that restore old stainedglass
windows and design works for public buildings
and private residences. Nowadays, master glass
artists continue to innovate and use new tools and
procedures (fusing, thermoforming or serigraphy...).
Some of these studios are open to visitors to reveal
the secrets of stained-glass window making.
Do not hesitate to contact Chartres Tourist Office to
obtain addresses and opening hours of workshops of
stained-glass masters.
there is also the international Stained-Glass center,
which offers a diverse, dynamic view of the art and
techniques of stained-glass window-making (see
page 15).
Finally, the “Galerie du vitrail”, a genuine stainedglass
antique dealer’s, offers an in-depth discovery
of the art, through the exhibition, the sale of old
and contemporary stained-glass works along with
a specialised bookshop, which is unique in France
(more than 400 listed titles) and decorative objects.
