Special Message (See first article on page two for details.)
Opposition Of Tax Letter
Dear__________,
I am a member of the Fraternal Order of
Eagles in Manchester, VT. I am concerned
about the proposed 10 percent tax on “pull
tickets” or “dollar tickets”. I ask you to
strongly oppose this ill-conceived measure.
If it passes, it will have a profound impact
on this organization and the charities that it
supports.
As background, the net proceeds from these
tickets are used to support the Aerie’s
charitable mission. Locally, the Eagles
sponsor a youth baseball team and the Race
for the Cure. It also supports the
Community Food Cupboard, Mark Skinner
Library and other organizations in this
community. Statewide organizations that
receive annual donations include the
Association of the Blind, the Green
Mountain Boy Scouts, and the Make A
Wish Foundation. Nationally the Eagles
main charity is the Diabetic Research
Center. In addition to the above, the Eagles
give several “scholarships” to BBA
graduates to offset some of their college
expenses.
If the tax were passed, we would expect our
charitable funds to be cut in half. The
arithmetic follows: We are lucky to make
$400 on a 2,000-ticket box. If we have to
pay a $200 tax, there remains only $200 for
charity. Local organizations that help the
local community will suffer if these tickets
are taxed.
I urge you to vote “no” on this legislation.
Sincerely,
State Presidents’ Dinner
Mark your calendars! We will be honoring our State Aerie President Burt Campney
and our State Auxiliary President Gail Stankiewicz on Saturday, March 16 th . This
party has a St. Paddy’s Day Theme. The Social Hour starts at 6:00 PM. DJ Matt
Laplante starts the music at 7:00 PM with dancing encouraged as soon as dinner
comes to an end.
Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM and will feature Corned Beef and Cabbage.
However, if Corned Beef and Cabbage is not your thing, there are plenty of home
cooked Pot Luck dishes from which to choose. Home baked desserts are also on the
menu to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.
Tickets are only $10.00 per person. They are now available at the bar.
February/March 2013
The State of Vermont, in its misguided wisdom, is proposing legislation to impose a
10% tax on pull tickets. The ramifications of this poorly thought out plan will hurt us
financially and will be the cause of us not being able to continue to fully support our
charities. This law would put us, and every other non-profit who sells these tickets, in
a position of cutting back on our community service.
Mee
Think about it. By the time we buy the tickets, sell them, pay the winners, and pay the
State, we will lose fifty percent of our revenue from them.
You have read the letter and have the list of people who need to hear what you have
to say about this insidious act. It is time for us all to let our elected officials know
that this tax is unfair and those who are in need are the ones who will suffer most.
Secretary Don Hayward will have copies of the letter at the club ready for your
signature. Please help us get the word out and put a stop to this madness!!
All Aerie and Auxiliary Members who have family members that will be graduating
from High School this year are encouraged to pick up a Scholarship Application. The
applications are waiting for you at the bar.
Mee
Please be sure that Secretary Lorraine Hunt receives the completed forms no later
than Sunday, March 31 st . Both the Aerie and Auxiliary will hold interviews on
Thursday, April 11 th in our upstairs meeting room at 6:00 PM. Decisions on who will
receive the scholarships will be determined that evening. Students will be contacted
with the results as quickly as possible.
Each year the Aerie and Auxiliary award a number of scholarships to help defray
some of the expenses that are incurred in furthering education. Please have your
family members take advantage of this opportunity.
If you would like to help with the Pot Luck portion of the meal, please contact Ann
Troumbley at 802/867-5342.
