Chicken-like birds<br />
Identification: 18–22″ – Very similar to Greater<br />
Sage-Grouse but found only in southwestern Colorado<br />
and southeastern Utah.<br />
Feeding: In summer, eats insects and sagebrush<br />
shoots, buds, and flowers. In fall and winter, eats<br />
sagebrush leaves almost exclusively.<br />
Habitat: <strong>Sagebrush</strong> steppe, grasslands, riparian/<br />
meadows. Nests on the ground.<br />
Conservation: Declining, with potential for extinction.<br />
Maintain a large mosaic of tall sagebrush mixed<br />
with native grasslands (including perennial bunchgrass),<br />
forbs, and legumes. Trees are not compatible with grouse<br />
management. 31
