Identification: 5–6 ″ – Upperparts gray and finely<br />

speckled; throat and chest pale and finely streaked.<br />

Belly pale. Frequently bobs body up and down.<br />

Feeding: Eats insects captured on the ground.<br />

Habitat: Rocky hillsides and talus within sagebrush<br />

steppe. Nests in cavities in rocks.<br />

Conservation: Generally declining, in part due<br />

to nest parasitism by the Brown-headed Cowbird.<br />

Minimize pesticide use.<br />
