Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus)<br />
Owls / Nocturnal <strong><strong>Bird</strong>s</strong><br />
Identification: 13–17″ – Mottled buffy-brown upperparts<br />
and streaked buffy underparts. Short ear tufts and<br />
dark patches around eyes.<br />
Feeding: Small mammals; sometimes birds.<br />
Habitat: <strong>Sagebrush</strong> steppe with open grassland<br />
areas. Nests on the ground, either under a shrub or up<br />
against/under a bunchgrass.<br />
Conservation: Declining. Maintain open sagebrush<br />
and grasslands and small mammal populations.<br />
Minimize pesticide use. Remove unused fences.<br />
