Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)<br />

Identification: 5.5 ″ – Brown or grayish-brown<br />

overall. Back dark and streaked. Underparts whiter,<br />

with crisp, heavy streaking. Pale “eyebrow” and fairly<br />

dark eye-line and “mustache” stripe. Often has a<br />

yellow tinge between eye and top of bill.<br />

Feeding: Collects insects and seeds on the ground.<br />

Habitat: Grasslands and open areas. Common in<br />

pastures and wet meadows. Nests on the ground.<br />

Conservation: Declining. Manage for healthy<br />

stands of native bunchgrasses<br />
