For this purpose, an email address was created, refi nariamatosinhos@galpenergia.com, which allows dealing with situations like complaints, suggestions, among others, in a more expeditious and methodical way. In <strong>2011</strong> there were no records at this address. This initiative aims to appropriately give a response to the progressive enrichment of the population of <strong>Matosinhos</strong> with particular emphasis to the surroundings of the refi nery, ensuring that this installation does not introduce factors that jeopardize the quality of life of the city and its inhabitants. This way the Refi nary seeks to develop initiatives that contribute for the above purposes. For <strong>2011</strong> we point out the following: Open refi nery Between the 28 th and the 30 th September the refi nery opened its doors to the outside citizens. We were rewarded with the visit of hundreds of people interested in knowing the “inside” of a refi nery. A reception tent was installed in the Leça da Palmeira marginal, near the well known Tidal Pool by architect Siza Vieira and buses were made available to visitors to travel through the main streets of the refi nery School visits Integrated in school projects, or just as an opportunity to extend knowledge and experience of an industrial site in full operation, we are visited annually by hundreds of students of various levels of education. To these students and their teachers, a brief presentation of the refi nery and its products is made, complemented later with a bus tour to the main spots of the refi nery. In <strong>2011</strong> we were visited by about 800 students. Protocols with schools The refi nery has concluded agreements with several schools in the municipality of <strong>Matosinhos</strong>, including the EB Perafi ta School, the EB Leça da Palmeira School and the Secondary School of Boa Nova. Under these protocols the refi nery contributes with funds to equip laboratories, to carry out minor improvement works of education facilities, and to develop projects such as school-radio. The refi nery allocates annually the <strong>Galp</strong> Award for the best student in the 9th grade of EB schools and the best students in Physics and Chemistry for High School. The refi nery is also committed to receive interns from courses in professional areas of which we highlight occupational health and safety technicians and the environmental technicians. Also as part of a technical training, the refi nery has protocols with professional schools in order to guide the training needs of industry, while ensuring job opportunities for students when recruiting employees. MATOSINHOS REFINERY / DATA BOOK ON HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT <strong>2011</strong> Finally, within the chapter on safety awareness, several technicians from the refi nery, experts in Health, Safety and the Environment have collaborated with several high schools in the municipality of <strong>Matosinhos</strong> disclosing to young students messages inducing safe behaviors. Social Responsibility The refi nery as a member of the community cannot be kept apart from the diffi culties that the most disadvantaged sectors experience in this period of economic contraction. Accordingly, we made donations to various charities and associations for the elderly, participating in the purchase and distribution of equipment useful for the welfare and quality of life of patients and the elderly. Striving to attend situations of need in the social tissue of <strong>Matosinhos</strong>, in collaboration with the parish councils and the church, the refi nery has been at christmas with the most disadvantaged families, and associations that support them, helping to make this a time of great solidarity. The refi nery also promotes recreational and sports events to support sports at local clubs.
