Gallery) featured fascinating actor prints originally<br />

collected in the middle <strong>of</strong> the 19th century by a fan<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kabuki theatre in Edo (Tokyo) and kept in an<br />

album, preserving their colours in excellent<br />

condition. Examples by the leading figure print<br />

designers <strong>of</strong> the day, Kunisada and Kuniyoshi,<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered different views <strong>of</strong> actors in the same<br />

performance and a spectacular set by Toyoharu<br />

Kunichika showed leading actors as firemen.<br />

<strong>The</strong> central role <strong>of</strong> bronze, jade and ceramic vessels<br />

in Chinese culture was explored in RR aa<br />

campaign medals from the Lester Watson collection<br />

juxtaposed with commemorative medals and other<br />

compositions, religious and secular, on predominantly<br />

Fund and the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, <strong>of</strong> a set<br />

<strong>of</strong> magnificent original set designs for the<br />

phenomenally successful Edwardian ‘fairy’ play <strong>The</strong><br />

Blue Bird by Maurice Maeterlinck, first staged at<br />

London’s Haymarket <strong>The</strong>atre in 1909.
