Preliminary Invocation<br />

This is an adaptation, possibly by Allan Bennett, <strong>of</strong> a Græco-Egyptian ritual <strong>of</strong> exorcism known<br />

as <strong>the</strong> “Stele <strong>of</strong> Jeu <strong>the</strong> Hieroglyphist” (PGM V: 96-172). While sometimes cited (by Crowley<br />

and those deriving from him) as <strong>the</strong> “Preliminary Invocation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Goëtia” its connection with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Goëtia is modern, deriving from Crowley’s publication (perhaps also from private magical<br />

work by Crowley and o<strong>the</strong>rs prior to that publication where <strong>the</strong> two were used in conjunction).<br />

The Greek text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Museum papyrus now known as PGM V (P. Lond. 46), with an<br />

English translation, was published in 1852 by Charles Wycliffe Godwin (Fragment <strong>of</strong> a Græco-<br />

Egyptian Work upon Magic, Cambridge: Deighton).<br />

Footnotes are transcribed from <strong>the</strong> two copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Preliminary Invocation” in <strong>the</strong> First<br />

Impressions edition where <strong>the</strong>y appeared as MS. marginalia and interpolations; one set by<br />

Crowley from his personal copy, a second set by Gerald Yorke, collated from <strong>the</strong> former plus<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r unidentified sources. Text in angle brackets in <strong>the</strong>se notes describes figures which I did not<br />

consider worth including in my occult symbols font. Crowley’s final working up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ritual is<br />

Liber Samekh which was published as Appendix IV <strong>of</strong> Magick in Theory and Practice. Double<br />

angle brackets «like this» flag notes which appear in <strong>the</strong> Yorke copy and not in <strong>the</strong> Crowley<br />

copy; it is possible <strong>the</strong>se were in fact summarized by Yorke from Samekh.<br />

The Greek text as given in Preisendanz (ed.), Papyri Græcæ Magicæ v. I, follows (<strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

title is here omitted); I have given breathings but not accents—nei<strong>the</strong>r would have been present<br />

on <strong>the</strong> original MS.—‘barbarous names’ are printed in small caps. For “tou deina” (“Him, NN”)<br />

would be substituted <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person to be delivered from <strong>the</strong> daimon.<br />
