A number <strong>of</strong> transcription errors in voces magica occurred in <strong>the</strong> Goëtia version; I have not<br />

ventured to correct <strong>the</strong>se, since some <strong>of</strong> Crowley’s glosses hinge on <strong>the</strong> erroneous readings, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>se names are for <strong>the</strong> most part corrupt to <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong> being meaningless in any language in any<br />

case. However, <strong>the</strong> above also contains a few conjectural restorations (<strong>of</strong> damaged places in <strong>the</strong><br />

MS.; flagged by angle brackets) and corrections by Preisendanz, e.g. ARBAQIAW for AR . . QIAW,<br />

IABAWQ IAW for IB . . QIAW, AGIE (‘holy’) for APE, etc.<br />

This is followed by a short rubric (English translation by D. E. Aune from Betz, op. cit):<br />

Preparation for <strong>the</strong> above ritual: Write <strong>the</strong> formula [Ñnoma] on a new sheet <strong>of</strong><br />

papyrus, and after extending it from one <strong>of</strong> your temples to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, read <strong>the</strong> 6<br />

names, while you face north saying:<br />

Øpotaxon moi panta ta daimonia,<br />

ƒna moi ºn Øphkooj paj daimon oÙranioj kai a„qerioj<br />

kai pigeioj kai Øpogeioj kai cersaioj kai nudroj<br />

kai pasa pipomph kai mastix ¹ qeou.<br />

And all daimons will be obedient to you. The beneficial sign is :><br />

(Øpotaxon moi panta ta daimonia k.t.l. is <strong>the</strong> prototype for <strong>the</strong> “Hear me and make all spirits<br />

subject unto me” refrain which does not occur in <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original invocation. The rest <strong>of</strong><br />

Aune’s translation is omitted to keep within <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> fair use.)<br />

ë denotes eta and õ denotes omega; umlauts over o<strong>the</strong>r vowels simply indicate that <strong>the</strong> vowel<br />

in question and <strong>the</strong> preceding one are pronounced distinctly. In <strong>the</strong>ir absence, ai, ei, oi, ui, au, eu,<br />

and ou are pronounced as single sounds (ai as in “aisle”, ei as in “veil”, oi as in “oil”, ui as in<br />

“quit”, au as <strong>the</strong> ‘ou’ in “loud”, eu as in “feud”, ou as in “route”—pronunciation information<br />

from Wenham, Elements <strong>of</strong> New Testament Greek).<br />
