I,
Volume 13, Number 211 Friday, September 28, 2007
Community-minded
The Tampico Boys 4-H club spent
a sunny Sunday afternoon painting,
trimming, weeding and repairing the
Gazebo at the Cowbelle Park in Glasgow.
Members applied for and received a
Montana 4-H Foundation People Partner's
Grant to make the needed repairs and to
stain the fence, picnic tables and to work
on the prevention of weeds in the park.
Both of the rails have been broken off the
ramp leading up to the Gazebo, but the
club decided not to replace them for fear
they would be broken off again. Instead,
they removed the exposed screws and
stained the ramp.
Members of all ages participated in this
project from the youngest with a stain
brush in his hand to the older members
arming themselves with power tools.
Brands were repainted on the benches,
boards replaced on the picnic tables, and
fences stained. Dead shrubs and trees
were removed, and healthy trees were
pruned. Next spring our community can
look forward to driving by the park and
seeing perennials blooming and new rails
replacing those weathered by the winter.
FWP seeks volunteers for regional
prairie dog implementation group
Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking applications to
fill up to 16 positions on a panel being established to
provide input and guidance as W begins implementing
the Region 6 Prairie Dog Distribution and Objectives
Plan.
This Prairie Dog Implementation Committee
(PDIC) will be comprised of interested landowners
or representatives from landowner organizations in
addition to agency personnel from FWP, BLM, DNR
and the U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service and representatives
from other governmental and non-governmental
organizations.
"The function of the committee is to assure that
implementation of the Region 6 Prairie Dog Plan is
done in a coordinated, biological and communitybased
manner," says FWP Region 6 Supervisor Pat
Gunderson. "The priorities of the PDIC are to identify
focus areas for assuring conservation of prairie dogs
and associated species and to help develop strategies
and solutions in response to issues affecting private
landowners. The first task of this committee will be to
begin the process of determining possible locations for
prairie dog complexes."
The Region 6 prairie dog abundance objectives
outlined in the plan call for managing prairie dog
acreage in a range from 30,500 acres to 41,400 acres.
The distribution objectives call for three different types
of prairie dog colonies.
"We're interested in hearing from people who are
interested in prairie dog management and who would
like to get more deeply involved in prairie conservation
issues and conflict resolution," added Gunderson.
"It's important to have a dedicated group to move this
process along. We would like to complete the initial
stages prior to next spring."
Applicants must be committed to attending all
meetings. The initial meeting will be on November
1 and is expected to last about 4 hours. Up to five
additional meetings are planned over the following six
months.
To obtain an application, either call FWP at
228-3700 or write PDIC Application, FWP, 54078
U.S. Highway 2 West, Glasgow MT 59230 or email
rrauscher@mt.gov.
Completed applications must be received by FWP
by October 15, 2007. Finalists will be notified by
October 22.
five junior varsity games, helping her team to
If that wasn't enough. she changed uniforms
and hit the court to play four games for the Xashua varsity team. Although
the Porcupines lost the match, Kassidi hustled and contributed I1 kills and
served 6 aces during the contest.
in Wild Goose Chase
Even though water fowl season doesn't open
until Saturday, we had a wild goose chase in Frazer
Thursday.
The Scotty cross country teams were at the Frazer
Invitational yesterday, and while the boys' race went
smooth, the race preceding that did not. Scotty Coach
Rod Karst explained the girls' race dilemma:
"There was a problem with the course run - it
wasn't accurate - so I pulled the girls off of the course
at approximately two miles. The person leading the
race on the four-wheeler took the girls on the wrong
and had them finishing a mile too soon. After
the race officials figured it out, they tried to get the girls
to do another loop, but I wouldn't let my girls do it.
It was an unfortunate event as the girls were running
extremely well, I think we had six or seven in the top
ten."
And, these Scotty girls take their sport personally
and seriously, as Coach Karst added there were a few
tears involved with the major screw-up.
But that's okay as far as the bigger picture is
concernced, as Coach Karst added his girls should
be rested and eager to run at Saturday's Havre
Invitational.
As for the boys, the Scotties had three top ten
runners, including Kyle Loewen's 3rd place effort,
to place a distant second with 48 points behind a
dominating Poplar team which finished with a lowly 19
(individually lst, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th). Individually for
A few copper facts'
Copper was the first metal to be used by humans.
Copper weapons have been found dating as far back as
7,000 years ago.
Silver is the only metal that conducts electricity better
than copper.
During the summer of 2006, the price of copper shot
so high that air conditioning coils, copper statues, even
antennas were stolen from homes and buildings to be
melted down.
To prevent a shortage of coins and illegal melting,
the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago suggested in its
Februaty 2007 letter gradually taking the penny out of
circulation.
Ole and Sven were drinking buddies who worked
as aircraft mechanics in Minneapolis. One day the
airport was fogged in and they were stuck in the hangar
with nothing to do. Ole said, "I vish ve had somethin ta
Sven says, "Me too. Y'know, I've hear you can
drink dat yet fuel an get a buzz. Ya vanna try it?"
So they pour themselves a couple of glasses of high
octane hooch and got completely smashed. Next morning
Ole woke up and is surprised at how good he feels. In fact
he feels GREAT! NO hangover! NO bad side effects.
Nothing!
The phone rang. It was Sven. "How iss you feelin
dis mornin?" Sven inquires.
Ole says, "I feel great. How bout you?"
Sven says, "I feel great, too. Ya don't have no
hangover?"
Ole says, "No dat yet fuel iss great stuff -- no
hangover, nothin. Ve oughta do dis more often."
Sven agreed."Yeah, vell, but dere's yust vun ting."
Ole asked, "Vat's dat?"
Sven questioned, "Haff you farted yet?"
Ole stopped to think. "No..."
"Vell, DON'T," Sven warned, "'cause I'm in
Milvaukee!"
Doctor: "It's no good. I can't find anything wrong
with you. It must just be the effects of drinking."
Patient: "I'll come back when you're sober then!"
