Autocross banished from Lansdowne Park
by
Alderman
Howard Smith
City Council has decided
not to allow the Autocross
at Lansdowne Park. Despite
the disruption caused by
this event in 1984 and
numerous complaints from
residents, Council initially
voted to allow the Autocross
again. Some one hundred
people wrote directly
to Council protesting this
decision and with this expression
of community support,
we were able to convince
Council to reverse
its decision. A key role
was played by Jim McCarthy,
the newly elected President
of the Glebe Community Association,
who cooperated
with my office to push
the case to exclude the
Autocross from Lansdowne
Park. Many thanks Jim.
Teenagers
If you have a teen-aged
son or daughter interested
in working at the Central
Canada Exhibition this summer,
please have them phone
the Exhibition office at
237-7222.
GCA Meeting
The annual general meeting
of the Glebe Community
Association was most interesting
again this year. It
clearly indicated the success
the Association has
recorded during the last
twelve months. Tribute
is to be paid to the work
of the outgoing Executive,
particularly Dan Ray for
his work on Lansdowne Park.
Rob Quinn did a masterly
job as President for the
last two years. Very well
done, Rob. Also thanks for
your kind remarks about my
office in your last column.
Women's Resource Centre
City Council has approved
a grant of $10,000 to assist
in the creation of a Women's
Resource Center. The Center
will provide advice and
support to individual women
and women's groups as
they proceed in dealing with
the challenges and barriers
they encounter currently.
Council has also approved
a $4,500 grant to Kaleidoscope,
a conference exploring
economic advancement
for women. Another grant
of $3,000 has been given to
promote the participation
of girls and women in fitness
and sports.
Herb and Spice
Complaints are continuing
to come in from Third Avenue
residents that cars are
blocking the street and
their driveways as a result
of insufficient parking
for shoppers going to the
Herb and Spice Shop. The
application to rezone the
adjacent parcel of land to
allow for a portion of
the parking required is
proceeding.
Capital Park
Some $2,000 was raised
on May 25 at a community
auction. The money will be
used to upgrade Capital
Park. Congratulations to
the auction committee, namely
Jo Irwin, Jean McCarthy,
Michel René de Cotret,
Elaine Konecny, Patti
Libbey, Suzanne Friedlaender
and Cindy Delage.
Mutchmor School Fete
Many parents and children
gathered May 30 to celebrate
Mutchmor School's 90th
birthday. In addition to
bringing greetings from
City Council, my remarks
underlined the important
role the school plays in
this community. Reference
was also made to the good
cooperation between my
office and School Trustees
John Smart and Don Francis
in achieving the upgrading
of the school's playground.
King's Daughters
It was a great pleasure
to attend the annual tea
of the King's Daughters
on June 1. It was enjoyed
by all despite the cool
weather after the large
storm that struck our
area. The baked goods we
purchased at the sale were
delicious.
Parking Study
The issuance of the long
awaited parking study of
Bank Street has been delayed
again. In response
to concerns expressed by
business people and the
GCA, my office has exercised
some influence to speed
Taxi Committee
Congratulations to Richard
Carver of Third Avenue and
Myles Frosst of Renfrew
Avenue. They have been selected
to serve on the City's
Taxi Advisory Committee
which is responsible for
advising Council on all
aspects of the taxi industry.
Avalon Mews
The developer of Avalon
Mews has announced that
the loss of Provincial funding
will result in no housing
units being included
in this project at Bank
and Second Avenue. The matter
was discussed at some
length during the GCA recent
board meeting when concerns
were expressed about the
slowness with which the application
for this project
was handled by the Buildings
Branch at City Hall. I
agree with these concerns
and readers may recall the
problems highlighted in
this column last summer
about Buildings Branch nonenforcement
of the front
yard parking prohibition
during the 1984 Exhibition.
Drop-in programme at
Lansdowile Park will begin
June 17 and run seven days
a week between 10 am and 6pm
until August 11. Although
the programme is planned
for children between 6 and
12, all ages are invited to
participate and staff will
accommodate those younger
or older as the need arises.
Youth programmes (12-20)
will take place in afternoons
and evenings. Those
over 12 who would like to
help out on a volunteer
basis are very welcome. The
program is free and no registration
is necessary. Call
Cathy Taylor at 725-9824
for more information.
If you have any comments
or concerns on these or
other matters, please call
