Morning workout a community effort
By MARGARET RUDOLF
It's not often that traffic
is blocked for stretching
arms and panting lungs, but
this unusual mini-fitness
workout was organized by the
Glebe Business Group to prove
that life in the Glebe is
special, and it's worth
slowing down to enjoy what
the community has to offer.
On Thursday, June 6, morning
traffic on Bank Street
was stopped between Fifth are
First Avenues so about 200
Glebe residents could participate
in a stretch-out
with Brenda Lauzon, fitness
organizer for CBCs Midday
programme. Lauzon's exercise
clips are taken from
scenic spots across Canada,
and now the Glebe and its
residents will be on the
national screen in the next
few days.
"This is the first community
we've taped for the
fitness segment of Midday,"
said Joan Woodward, Glebe
resident and producer-director
for Midday. "Ernie Saar
contacted me and we thought
the idea was great, and
good promotion for the
Glebe".
It was only about one
month ago that Saar, chairman
of the Glebe Business
Group, started organizing
to get T-shirts printed and
residents involved in the
morning workout. "The costs
involved were minimal. What
is important is that it's
a community effort," said
Saar, owner of Ernie's Smoke
Shop.
"We're trying to get this
part of Bank Street peopleoriented,"
said John Leaning,
of Leaning Associates.
"We'd like to prove to city
council it's possible to
add chairs, tables and trees
along Second and Third Avenues
so people could sit
and have a coffee". Leaning
added even with a huge CBC
production van parked along
Second and Bank, cars were
still able to circulate
freely.
"This section of Bank Street
has so much character.
It's not yet been spiffied
like Elgin Street,",said
Michael Cassidy, the member
of Parliament for Ottawa
South. Cassidy jumped with
other participants in time
with Lauzon's exercises.
Britannia Alderman Marlene
Catterall wore her jogging
togs, although she admitted
she really jogs only between
meetings. "But I'm here
because this is a great
community effort," she said.
"The Glebe has a village atmosphere,
it's just marvelous
to see historic buildings
restored."
exactly strenuous -- they
consisted of arm-stretching,
toe-touching and lots of
smiling for the Midday
programme.
