Three-part workshop
on children's books
By INGRID DRAAYER
"More, please!" was the
consensus of participants
in a three-part workshop on
children's books held at
the Glebe Community Centre
April 29, May 6 and May 13.
The workshops were led by
Joan Weller, a children's
librarian with Ottawa
Public Library, who inspired
everyone with her enthusiasm
and love for children's
literature.
Books for babies, picture
books, poetry, fairy tales
and first novels were examined;
methods of judging
and selecting children's
books for their literary
and aesthetic qualities as
well as their appeal to
children were reviewed. The
need to encourage reading and
foster an appreciation for
books at home was emphasized
throughout the sessions.
Suggestions
The participants were unanimous
in their hope that
the course be repeated in
the fall. A worthwhile
suggestion from Joan Weller
was to organize a workshop
to assist those interested
in Christmas book buying
for children.
