Parenting Centre celebrates tenth year

On June 21 Ottawa parents
are celebrating the 10th
birthday of the Parent Preschool
Resource Centre with
a gala party complete with
skits about the centre,
birthday cake and balloons.
"We are inviting P.P.R.C.
users and alumni to come and
share memories of the early
days at the centre," said
Marion Balla. "We are also
hoping that people who value
family support services
will come and pay tribute
to the dedication of the
staff and volunteers who
have kept the centre going".
Founding member
Balla was one of the original
group of parents who
banded together in 1975 to
help each other through the
hectic task of childraising.
Starting with bare walls and
scant resources they created
the Parent Preschool Resource
Centre, a model that has
since been copied across
Canada.
"At first the centre was
only a dream that a number of
people shared," said Balla.

Today the P.P.R.C., located
at 63 Evelyn Avenue in
Ottawa East, is a well respected
support service for
parents and caregivers of
young children. It provides
a drop-in, a toy and book
library, workshops, and an
outreach service to playgroups
across Ottawa. In the past
ten years it has helped
thousands of young parents
through the difficult early
days.
"Many parents are very
idealistic when they have
their first child and expect
a wonderful high from parenting,"
said Balla. "But
they find they aren't sure
of themselves and they don't
get the high they expected".
"The P.P.R.C. helps them
to realize that this is normal,
that parenting has its
ups and downs. It helps
parents get through the low
periods and helps maintain
the high".
Throughout its history
the centre has been plagued
by financial problems. Support
has come from the provincial
and municipal governments
and volunteer fund-

raising, but in 1984-85 the
centre had to eliminate
staff positions and reduce
services to continue operation.
The gala will be an
important fundraiser as
well as a celebration.
