Alumar Refinery Expansion
The Alumar Refinery is currently increasing
capacity by 2.1 million metric tons per
year (mtpy) of alumina to meet the world
demand for aluminum products. Alumar
is located in the northwest of Brazil in the
state of Maranhão. The expanded refinery
will have a total capacity of 3.5 million
mtpy when completed in 2008. It is the
largest refinery expansion in the world.
Hatch is working as part of an integrated
team to deliver the project. From its office
in São Paulo, Brazil, Hatch is providing more
than 300 people for the engineering (both
office and field), procurement, and project
and construction management assignments.
The project is currently more than 25
percent complete. To date, there have
been more than 3 million hours worked
without a lost-time incident.
The expansion of the Alumar Refinery
is part of a US$1.8 billion investment plan
that the owner consortium is implementing
for its primary metal production operations
in Brazil. Alumar is owned by Alcoa
(54 percent), BHP Billiton (36 percent)
and Alcan (10 percent).
