Union Station Rail Corridor
Systems Upgrade
Hatch Mott MacDonald is a key member
of the joint venture retained by GO Transit
to be responsible for overall program
management of the Union Station Rail
Corridor Infrastructure Improvement
Program in Toronto, Ontario. An upgrade
of the communications, electrical and
signalling systems is a fundamental
component of the project.
The current signalling and control system
operates a network of more than 260
switches and 180 signals, providing more
than 4,000 signalled routes over 25 miles
of track within a geographic area of 3 1 / 2
miles. The network currently handles more
than 300 trains per day and 40 million
passengers per year.
The new signals, electrical and communications
integrated system will provide
the capacity and enhanced functionality
to accommodate the anticipated doubling
of traffic within the next 25 years.
The new system must be installed
and commissioned into service without
interruption to daily GO Transit, VIA and
freight operations. The upgrade will
follow a staged implementation program,
progressively commissioning each portion
of the new system and decommissioning
the redundant portion of the old system.
Final commissioning is scheduled for 2013.
The new system will use the latest
advances in computer-based signalling and
control technologies.
