the “ Biomedical science and engineering are poised to revolutionize society in the twenty-first century in the same manner that traditional science and engineering have transformed society over the past 100 years. One only has to look at the dramatic alteration in transportation, communications, sanitation, and chemical processing over the past 100 years to envision what advances will occur in medicine through the implementation of quantitative approaches to the detection, treatment, and cure of disease. ” Vincent Turitto, Professor and Director, Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering Response: A FOCUS ON THE LIFE SCIENCES Creating a prosthetic eye. Controlling epileptic seizures. Developing treatments for the complications of diabetes. Although these challenges were once the stuff of science fiction, researchers at IIT’s Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering are now leading a quest to develop viable solutions. Critical work is being conducted through three centers housed under the Pritzker Institute. The Center for Integrative Neuroscience and Neuroengineering Research is investigating everything from how to control epileptic seizures to remedying vision loss with prosthetic vision. The first of its kind at a United States university, the new Engineering Center for Diabetes Research and Education is using engineering techniques to treat diabetes and its complications. And the Medical Imaging Research Center (MIRC) is on the cutting edge of developing new X-ray technologies, better methods of interpreting mammograms, and other issues related to medical imaging. Partners in research at the Pritzker Institute include Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. Other areas of the university also are building upon strengths in the life sciences to advance knowledge and address significant societal needs. The IIT Research Institute (IITRI) remains at the forefront of cancer research, exploring vital projects that offer hope for a cure. With the support of a $22 million contract from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, IITRI researchers are working to assess the potential links between cell phones and cancer. And a new vitamin D analog developed by Professor Rajendra Mehta— in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago—was readied for clinical trials last spring. The compound will be tested for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. IIT’s National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST) is addressing a MIRC Professors Miles Wernick [left] and Yongyi Yang timely need by researching the safety of our food supply. Last year, NCFST hosted the Food Safety World Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C. NCFST Director Martin Cole was named a fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Food Science and Technology. 11
