IIT has responded to this need, selecting energy and sustainability as an academic priority for the coming years. Whether responding to a national fuel crisis or joining Mayor Richard M. Daley’s challenge to make Chicago a “green” city, IIT students and faculty from across various disciplines are uniting in pursuit of this priority. The “House of the Future” is one such endeavor. The project will utilize expertise from many areas within the university to design and build a model of clean energy, innovative materials, and the latest technologies. Start-up funding for the project came from the Tellabs Foundation, and additional funding is being identified to support construction and operation of the model. Just two years after its creation, the cross-disciplinary IIT Energy and Sustainability Institute (ESI) has joined faculty from Armour College of Engineering and the College of Architecture to respond to the nation’s need to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. ESI now combines the expertise of 30 faculty members in 10 different research teams focusing on education, and research and development initiatives at the institute. Research endeavors are underway in three focus areas— decarbonization (hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, clean coal), energy efficiency and conservation (hybrid systems, sustainable environments), and power (grid design and reliability). Students are taking up the challenge for sustainability as well, participating in relevant research through the Interprofessional Projects (IPRO) Program. Just a few of the projects explored last year were wind energy, tire recycling, coal desulfurization, the sustainability of IIT buildings, and remediating contaminated soil. Two new IPRO courses were developed under the supervision of Professors Mohammad Shahidehpour and Paul Anderson to design a small hydroelectric power plant on an existing low-head dam on the Fox River. With the sponsorship of alumni Alex Tseng (IE ’49) and Carl Spetzler (CHE ’63, M.B.A. ’65, Ph.D. BE ’68), the IPRO team will investigate and evaluate the technical and market integration issues associated with integrating small hydroelectric energy into the current power grid. 7
