■ ■ Keeping Armour’s students ahead of the curve involves paying attention to the rapid advances in engineering and science, and juxtaposing them against the changing needs of industry. New advanced degree programs include a Master of Biological Engineering, Master of Engineering in Manufacturing, Master of VLSI and Microelectronics, Master of Power Electronics, and Master of Biomedical Imaging and Signals. New graduate certificates include Specialization in Pharmaceutical Engineering, Computer-Integrated Design and Manufacturing, and Product Quality and Reliability Assurance. Major capital improvements are underway at Armour. Jumpstarted with $1 million in matching funds, Armour has raised nearly 70 percent of the $5 million dedicated to upgrading the labs serving students in the Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Civil and Architectural Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering programs. ■ ■ Mark Anastasio, associate professor of Biomedical Engineering, received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in support of his research on the development of new phase-contrast imaging techniques that permit the visualization of soft tissue structures that are undetectable using conventional X-ray radiographic methods. Armour professors earned the distinction of fellow of their respective industry societies. Professor Hassan Nagib was elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Vincent Turitto, professor and director of the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering, was named a member of the inaugural class of fellows of the Biomedical Engineering Society. And Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor David Williams was named a fellow of the American Physical Society.
