It starts with raw data and rapidly incorporates data cleansing, structure information, generation, information storage and retrieval, data mining, analysis, and modeling of complex systems— and ends with interfacing processed data with users,” says McMorris. The Internet is a domain in which data are amassing most rapidly. Sifting the relevant from the chaff is one of the biggest challenges facing Internet users today. Because online data are electronically distributed and in diverse formats, efficiently reading and identifying this information requires vastly improved information processing engines. The Information Retrieval Laboratory (IRL), in CSL’s Department of Computer Science, is among the national leaders in this innovative and critical area of data mining. The IRL has developed processing systems that are currently in use at such organizations as Harris Corporation and the National Institutes of Health. To further meet the need for data organization and retrieval, CSL has set a goal of building an international reputation in informatics, a fast-growing discipline that connects the gathering, storage, retrieval, and classification of information of various types. One of the first steps will be to develop a Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. In addition to the burgeoning area of informatics, the college is working on a number of innovative research efforts. An association with Argonne National Laboratory enables significant faculty involvement with Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source, the brightest X-ray source in the western hemisphere. In-situ structural studies of collagen, real-time muscle motion, and the fundamental investigation of fuel cells are just a sample of the projects in which researchers are heavily involved. 32
