Students are recruited in tenth grade, based on teacher recommendations and through
marketing on campus. The comprehensive program begins in 11th grade, with three
main components: academics, paid work experience, and student support.

• Molecular Biology: Crossbreeding Studies, Electrophoresis; Bacterial
Transformation; Restricting Enzyme Digest
• Biochemistry: Protein Assays, DNA Extraction; Thin Layer and Column
Chromatography
• Tools and Equipment: Balances; Pipette Aid and Micropipets; Light Microscope;
Hemacytometer; Spectrophotometer; pH Meter
• Good Laboratory Practices: Laboratory Safety; Written Protocols; Laboratory

Eight summer weeks, 20 hours per week @ $9 per hour

• Monthly BP staff/teacher reviews of individual student progress, with Individual
Student Improvement Agreement Plan as necessary. Every student placed on an
Improvement Agreement in the 2008–09 academic year raised his or her performance.
• Twice weekly afterschool Study Groups in partnership with the Berkeley Public
Library. Regular feedback to parents
• Bayer’s annual Career Awareness Conference, a full-day site visit with scientists
guiding lab tours and hands-on activities
• Student Posters Ceremony, judged by prominent community members; families,
elected officials, and industry representatives are invited, and refreshments are served
• Dress for Success, Biotech Parent Night, other motivational events
