their prisoners, with the loss <strong>of</strong> one man killed, and two or three wounded.<br />

[Watertown] Saturday, August 5,1775<br />

Whereas it has been represented to this House, that several persons are<br />

detained in Boston by General [Thomas] Gage, for the purpose <strong>of</strong> procuring the<br />

release <strong>of</strong> [Josiah] Jones and [Jonathan] Hicks from Concord Jail, and until they<br />

shall be suffered to go into Boston, therefore,<br />

Resolved, That the said Jones and Hicks be released from the Jail at Concord,<br />

and suffered to go "into Boston, upon condition that the several persons who have<br />

been detained on account <strong>of</strong> their imprisonment, viz : John Gill, Thomas Boylston,<br />

Peter Edes, Wm. Starr, James LoveI1, Samuel Whitwell, Samuel Partridge, John<br />

Leach, Richard Boynton, and all the Selectmen <strong>of</strong> Boston, and also Benjamin<br />

Hitchborne, lately taken on board a Man <strong>of</strong> War at Newport, be suffered to come<br />

out <strong>of</strong> Boston, with their families and effects; and that the said Jones and Hicks<br />

be produced on the lines at Roxbury or Charlestown, at such time as shall be agreed<br />

,on, in order to be exchanged for the persons aforesaid; and that Mr. John Pit& and<br />

Captain Brown <strong>of</strong> Watertown, with such as the honourable Board shall join, be a<br />

Committee to wait on his Excellency General Washington, and desire him to send<br />

into Boston a Trumpeter with a copy <strong>of</strong> this Resolve to the Selectmen <strong>of</strong> said<br />

Town.<br />

[Endorsed] In Council, August 5, 1775; Read and concurred and Mr. Joseph<br />

Palmer is joined.<br />

Moored with Springs on our Cables in Chas Town River<br />

at f/2 past Noon Made the signal for a Pilot who came on board<br />

at 1 at j/2 past 2 saluted Vice Admiral [Samuel] Graves <strong>of</strong> the<br />

White with 15 Guns at 5 came to with the best bower above Charles<br />

Town in 6 fm got the stream Anchor to steady her at 9 veered a<br />

Cable each way and moored, with the stream Cable for a spring on<br />

the small, And a Hawser on the best bower:<br />

We dined very agreeably; after dinner Gen'l [John] Thomas one other<br />

Gentleman and myself rode to Dorchester Neck and viewed the lines there, which<br />

are within point blank shot <strong>of</strong> the enemy . . . We then returned to Roxbury,
