earliest records unto the present times, in
consequence of the horrible supposition that
the God of mercy and of justice dehghts in
the blood of human victims, and in the mental
and corporeal slavery of the greater portion
of the human race—^now that, ashamed of the
absurdity of the ancient motives, or pretences,
we have shifted the ground of persecution to
a question of political expedience.
