The man who comes forward to controvert
any long-received opinion, should be
fuUy prepared with proofs to bear him out in
aU his assertions, for he may be assured that
his attempt will be regarded with feehngs of
suspicion and distrust.
There is a kind of
superstitious veneration which inclines people
to adhere with pertinacity to the ideas which
they have formed, no matter whether good
or bad.
