Vicars Letter The Vicarage, Langworth Tel. 01522 – 754233 As I prepare to retire from the parishes in the Benefice of Barlings, this will be my last contribution to the Sudbrooke News. Next month’s issue will cover both July and August and Rev. Penny Green who takes over from me will be occupying this space. She will be known to some of you as she is already in post at South Lawres and lives at Cherry Willingham. Later in the year, it is proposed that their 4 churches will be combined with the 4 in this benefice. My official retirement date is 30 th September, but I will be taking my last services on 25 th August so I can use my final month to sort out transferring paperwork and preparing to move from the vicarage. As we ‘downsize’ in readiness for the move, I come across papers recording various events over different periods of time. Many bring back happy memories, but there are some sad ones too. Rudyard Kipling’s words in his poem “If” have always been a favourite with me, especially the couplet “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same.” Incumbents come and go – in a sense “Here today, and gone tomorrow” people – just ministers in a long line of succession stretching back across the centuries. It is the Church Wardens and Parochial Church Council who are the real continuity – and during my time here I have been blessed with the highest quality of folk in these roles. Thank you all who have served in them. Also, thank you all for the privilege of being your Rector for the past years, and may God bless you as you enter the brave new world of being part of a larger grouping. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers, as - like the old soldier of the early 20 th century popular song who does not die but “simply fades away” – I will simply fade away at the end of the Summer. Thank you for the memories.
