While payment processor Concord<br />
EFS finalized plans to acquire Card<br />
Payment Systems, terminal manufacturer<br />
Hypercom Corp. signed an agreement<br />
to acquire POS terminal leasing<br />
organization Golden Eagle/Golden<br />
Leasing. (Hypercom sold Golden in<br />
October 2003, and Concord merged<br />
with First Data Corp. in Februar y<br />
2004.)<br />
One for VeriFone<br />
One Network became the first company<br />
to implement VeriFone's e-Gift Card<br />
payment application. This enabled One<br />
Network, an e-commerce exchange<br />
service and back-<strong>of</strong>fice transaction<br />
processor, to <strong>of</strong>fer brick-and-mortar<br />
merchants e-gift card programs that<br />
could potentially lower merchants' costs<br />
and improve customer ser vice, among<br />
other benefits.<br />

and Micros<strong>of</strong>t Corp. agreed to develop<br />
Windows CE-based platforms for the<br />
retail industry. CE is a modular, realtime<br />
operating system designed for<br />
32-bit embedded systems and suitable<br />
for hand-held devices.<br />
