Total Hurt Initiative
Susan Bradley
Safety Supervisor
ExxonMobil Development Company

Nobody Gets Hurt
• Hurt Free is about caring for people and aligning behaviors at all
levels to achieve our vision of Nobody Gets Hurt
• Historically, we focused on eliminating Lost Time Incidents
• As performance improved, we began focusing on eliminating Medical
Treatments and Restricted Work incidents
• We recognized that we need to eliminate all incidents that result in any
injury, including first aids and no treatments (pain, bruising, etc.)
• Measuring and communicating our Total Hurt Rate reinforces our
commitment to achieving our vision
Objectives of reporting all HURT
• Demonstrate care and concern
for all people being Hurt
• Support a culture where all
incidents are reported
• Analyze learnings from
incidents lower in the safety
pyramid to prevent future Hurt
• Detect earlier trends in safety
performance
Identify High Potential Early
• Gather as many “total hurt” and
near miss data points as practical
• Perform a quick and simple “if not
for luck” analysis on each point
• Sort data based on reasonable
potential for fatalities, then lost
time, then recordables
• Focus energy/resources on
highest potential first
• Continue to take advantage of
low hanging fruit to influence
safety climate
Today's near miss/first aid is
possibly tomorrow's fatality;
O&A is Key to Eliminate Hurt
• 2010 EMDC wide data on Total Hurt shows the majority of injuries
may have been prevented if others had intervened
