The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology - Austria's largest non-university research institute - is a strong
partner for innovation in the fields of health and environment. Our research areas include water management
and water purification. AIT experts use water management and geographical information systems, modeling,
simulations and scenario development to optimize water systems and processes. The treatment of various
types of wastewater is as important as a safe and reliable supply of drinking water. Biofilters like constructed
wetlands are an economical alternative to sewage treatment plants using the activated sludge process. The
key focus of research is on the development of “green“ technologies for the purification of ground and waste
waters without the use of chemicals. Organic, inorganic and biological pollutants are selectively removed using
physico-chemical methods and natural materials. Reference projects from many countries can be provided.
