The University of Strathclyde is a leading international technological university, based in Glasgow in the West of
Scotland. Recently awarded the title of UK University of the Year, 2012, Strathclyde is a centre for innovation,
connecting high-quality research to outcomes that have real impact. By developing strategic alliances with worldclass
academic institutions and organisations, we transfer our knowledge and technologies to leading, international
companies.
Strathclyde is dedicated to supporting multi-disciplinary approaches to global challenges. International research
staff have been working for over 20 years on water and sanitation projects in Malawi in collaboration with NGOs,
with the support of the Scottish Government Climate Justice Fund and International Development Fund. For example,
the Scotland Chikhwawa Health Initiative, based in southern Malawi has improved access to water and
sanitation and healthcare facilities for many remote communities. Working with the local educational institutions,
the project has also supported capacity building for health professionals and environmental health workers. This
work has influenced healthcare policy in Malawi and elsewhere in the region, through the Africa Academy for Environmental
Health.
Established in 1796 as a ‘place of useful learning’, Strathclyde continues to engage and inspire world-leading
scientists and engineers to discover and deliver innovative solutions to practical problems.
