A corrected rate can be calculated with this method, by treating the three nonmelanoma<br />

deaths occurring within the first five years of follow-up (marked by an<br />

asterisk in Table 5) as withdrawals. The relative survival rate is calculated by dividing<br />

the observed rate by the expected survival rate, as in the actuarial method.<br />

Age-adjustment of survival rates<br />

The use of corrected or relative survival rates accomplishes age-adjustment in part,<br />

since they make allowance for the association between age <strong>and</strong> dying from causes<br />

other than cancer. However, if there is an association between age <strong>and</strong> the risk of<br />

dying from the cancer in question, <strong>and</strong> it is desirable to make comparisons between<br />

case series of differing age structure, then, as with incidence rates, either the<br />

comparisons should be limited to age-specific survival rates, or age-st<strong>and</strong>ardization<br />

procedures should be used (Haenszel, 1964).<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ard error of a survival rate<br />

The st<strong>and</strong>ard error <strong>and</strong> confidence intervals are used as a measure of precision of the<br />

survival rates, as already described for incidence.<br />
