Tegemeo (2K x 17/B/1)
Open-pollinated (pure line) sorghum variety, selected at Ilonga from a cross with pedigree 2K x
17/B/1. Released in 1986.
Plant characteristics
- height 1.4-1.7 m, semi-dwarf
- tan-colored plant
- medium-sized, semi-upright leaves
- semi-compact, medium-sized panicle, good panicle exsertion, 10-15 cm
- fair tillering, 1-2 tillers/plant
- medium to late duration, 80-85 days to 50% heading, 135-140 days to maturity
Grain characteristics
- creamy white, medium-sized grain
- hard, corneous grain, 3.5 on a 1-5 scale (5=hardest)
- straw-colored glume
- testa (seed coat) absent
- tannin content zero
- milling quality fairly good, 78% flour yield, white flour
- malting quality poor, 20.12 SDU value
Adaptation. Adapted to loam and sandy-loam soils in intermediate- to long-season areas
(120-150 days) in central Tanzania with average rainfall of 450-600 mm. However, it is fairly
susceptible to molding during late rains.
Yield potential. 2.5-4.0 t ha -1
Utilization. Food and livestock feed: flour used for porridge (ugali), grain in poultry feed.
Spillover. Potential for spillover to other areas/countries is limited; restricted to the central
plateau of Tanzania. Susceptibility to bird damage and Striga has limited large-scale adoption in
the Western and Lake Zones.
Pato (SDS 2293-6)
Open-pollinated (pure line) sorghum variety selected from an introduced germplasm IS 23496
indexed as SDS 2293-6 in Matopos. Released in 1995.

- height 1.9-2.4 m, semi-tall to tall, with thick stem
- purple-colored plant
- medium-sized, drooping leaves
- medium-sized, semi-open panicle, short bulky heads, fair panicle exsertion, 6-10 cm
- fair tillering, 1-2 tillers/plant
- vigorous seedlings, non-lodging
- medium to late duration, 80-90 days to 50% flower, 130-140 days to maturity
