2.2.4 The SADC Variety Catalogue<br />

The PMU will develop and maintain a list <strong>of</strong> varieties that have been<br />

released for marketing in the regi<strong>on</strong>. The list will be called the SADC<br />

Variety Catalogue. New varieties will be included in the SADC Variety<br />

Catalogue if they meet the requirements set by the SSC (See Secti<strong>on</strong><br />

2.2.6).<br />

The Catalogue will include varieties <strong>of</strong> crops for which DUS and VCU<br />

data, as required under the Regi<strong>on</strong>al Release System, are available.<br />

For each variety, the informati<strong>on</strong> in the Catalogue will include:<br />

•• Botanical and comm<strong>on</strong> name <strong>of</strong> the species;<br />

•• Name <strong>of</strong> the variety and any syn<strong>on</strong>yms;<br />

•• Indicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> agro-ecological c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for which the variety is<br />

suitable;<br />

•• Name and address <strong>of</strong> the holder <strong>of</strong> the variety or the Variety Holder’s<br />

agent;<br />

•• Date <strong>of</strong> entry <strong>of</strong> the variety in the catalogue;<br />

•• Name and address <strong>of</strong> the NSA that received the applicati<strong>on</strong>; and<br />

•• Informati<strong>on</strong> about where the reference sample is being stored and<br />

managed.<br />

2.2.5 The SADC Variety Database<br />

PMU will develop and maintain a SADC Variety Database that will include<br />

all varieties in the regi<strong>on</strong>, i.e., varieties submitted for regi<strong>on</strong>al release, both<br />

accepted and rejected, varieties released at the nati<strong>on</strong>al level and which<br />

have not been submitted for regi<strong>on</strong>al release, as well as landraces.<br />

The SADC Variety Database will cover all varieties for which data are<br />

available and will be accessible to all Member States. The details to be<br />

included in the Database will be determined by the SSC and compiled<br />

by PMU. Reas<strong>on</strong>s for rejecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a variety will also be included in the<br />

Database.<br />
