Associati<strong>on</strong> EURATOM MEdC<br />
Optical <strong>fibers</strong> are expected to play an important role, al<strong>on</strong>g with other<br />
<strong>optical</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ents (such as w<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>and</strong> mirrors) <strong>and</strong><br />
optoelectr<strong>on</strong>ic comp<strong>on</strong>ents <strong>in</strong> plasma diagnostics set-ups,<br />
communicati<strong>on</strong> systems, distributed sens<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
to be used <strong>in</strong> ITER. They have to operate under high temperature <strong>and</strong><br />
high radiati<strong>on</strong> fields (gamma-rays, neutr<strong>on</strong>), hence the <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
towards the <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> of their radiati<strong>on</strong> resistance capabilities.<br />
Under irradiati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>optical</strong> <strong>fibers</strong> exhibit both the degradati<strong>on</strong> of their<br />
<strong>optical</strong> transmissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> radiati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>duced <strong>optical</strong> emissi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
All these <strong>effects</strong> are related to the generati<strong>on</strong> of radiati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>duced color<br />
centers <strong>in</strong> <strong>optical</strong> fiber core. Color centers appear over the entire<br />
<strong>optical</strong> spectrum (UV, visible ranges)<br />
