California Syrah Rises to the Top
One of the first comprehensive tastings of
California Syrahs is the focus of the 8th Annual
Wine Advocate Seminar and Tasting at the CIA at
Greystone’s campus in the Napa Valley. Held on
Tuesday, October 16, at 1:30 p.m. and hosted by
wine critic Antonio Galloni, the event benefits The
Wine Advocate Endowed Scholarship fund for
students of the college’s Rudd Center for
Professional Wine Studies. Tickets may be

While the great French Syrahs are well known
and sought after, as are those from Australia, where
it is known as Shiraz, only recently have Syrahs
from California begun to gain attention and
popularity. In the last few vintages, California
winemakers have hit their stride with the varietal,
earning accolades from critics and consumers for
making complex wines with a personality all their
own – and this tasting event will feature 12 of these
extraordinary California Syrahs.
The one-of-a-kind tasting will be led by The
Wine Advocate's Antonio Galloni, who was invited
by Robert Parker to join the publication in 2006.
Mr. Galloni’s “beat” was soon expanded to include
Champagne, Chablis and the Côte d'Or in France,
and he has since assumed responsibilities for
reviewing the wines of California. The Culinary
Institute of America is honored to have Mr. Galloni
continue the annual seminar and tasting series
during his October visits to review California wines.
He will also host the traditional Great Friends,
Great Food, Great Causes…and Great Wine
(BYOB) Dinner at PRESS Restaurant in St. Helena.

Scholarship fund, now over $1.1 million, as well as
The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Mr.
Galloni’s favorite charity.
Reservations for the California Syrah Wine
Advocate Seminar and Tasting with Antonio Galloni
are $1,000 per person, which includes a taxdeductible
charitable donation of $750.
Reservations for the Great Friends, Great Food,
Great Causes…and Great Wine (BYOB) Dinner at
PRESS Restaurant are $1,200 per person, including
a tax-deductible charitable donation of $1,000.
A special price has been set for attendees of both
events – $2,000 per person, which includes a taxdeductible
charitable donation of $1,750.
