One of the most often-asked questions
winery visitors ask is some form of, “Why
Treasure Island?” It has not been a direct
route from the pastoral vineyards of
Sonoma County to the former Naval base
with its curious blend of peaceful
avenues, transitional ghost buildings and
stunning views of every San Francisco
landmark. Doing the same thing as
everyone else is seldom the path for me.
Not only do I listen to a different
drummer, I’ll probably make his drum different, too. Instead of
opening yet another winery in Sonoma County, I was drawn in by the
unique location and environment. No one had attempted to make
wine here, but re-utilizing these buildings with the correct infrastructure
already in place was a great opportunity. I co-founded the first
multi-winery property on the Island, then split off to establish Bodega
Wine Estates in another building that became available.
My love affair with wine and food developed over many years.
Never content with being a bystander, my journeys led me to learn to
cook, grow grapes and make wine. It is a process in motion, always
seeking the best out there – learn from the best, source the best and
make the best. I am always looking to combine the timeless trinity of
food, wine and friends. The “Bodega” (Spanish for “cellar”) provides a
vehicle for these passions and to share them with others. Besides my
winery, Knightswood, I provide space in the Bodega for other artisan
winemakers.
A visit to the comfortably appointed tasting room provides our
guests with an unhurried, welcoming experience as well as a range of
wines to sample and purchase. On any afternoon, one can expect a
warm greeting from our group. Terri is a delightful hostess and multilingual
expatriate who spent many years living in Madrid, Spain. She
provides much of the inspiration behind the designs and events. A
dog-friendly place, Bentley the Basset Hound can often be seen
resting on a Persian rug requesting your attention, and there is always
a winemaker nearby to chat with you or even provide a tour. There
are often fun events, featuring food, music and of course wine. Some
are exclusive to wine club members so be sure at ask about what’s
coming.
