Going to sing
In response to last month’s
Letter to the Editor:
First of all, we all know that
things are not always going
to be exactly the same.
There are exceptions to
everything. Secondly, mine
was a Letter to the Editor,
not an editorial – big difference.
So, you are saying that when it
gets a little busy that karaoke hosts
get confused easily. Actually, that is
pretty much exactly what you said.
This isn’t rocket science, write a list
in the order they come up!
Another point: You get in the
rotation when you turn in a slip, not
just by showing up.
Using your example, “What if 14
people come into the establishment
between 8:45 and 9:15…” I say, if you
start at 9:30, the last slip in the rotation
is an hour out (that is if you’re a
sharp KJ). Then more people come
in at 9:45 and you put them in the
middle?! All you’re doing is pushing
the people that have been there, back
a notch or two, and letting new people
in before thos that have been there and
haven’t sung yet. Even if it’s the 3rd
time through the rotation, the same
principle applies. Do not push back the
people that got there earlier and have
already been spending their money.
And don’t put them at the end of the
slips turned in (as you implied), put
them at the end of the rotation.
It might be near the end anyway,
maybe only two singers out, or 10, whatever.
If they don’t like it, then do like the
other people and come earlier!
Yeah, I know that if it’s 12:30 and
your best friend, customer, or tipper
walks in, they’re going to sing. It’s just
one of the exceptions.
As far as duets go, everyone gets
their turn. If someone wants to sing
with me, why in the heck should they
lose their turn? It doesn’t take any longer
to go through the rotations, even
when my duet singer has someone sing
with them in their slot. Everyone gets
a slot, and should be able to sing with
someone if they want.
If the host can’t remember who
goes where because they’re busy, then
write it down, make a list, or better yet,
find a new job! It takes five seconds to
put people on the list as you go, and
you don’t have to rely on your miserable
articles / pics / updates

memory. Another thing about duets is
that if it’s slow, you can give the duet
singer their own slot (until it gets
busier), but be sure to tell them up front.
And maybe the rest of the crowd too.
And why in the heck are you
so tired of people knocking karaoke
hosts? There must be a reason.
Are we supposed to just sit back
and ignore what’s wrong with your
show? Don’t you want to be better at
what you do? Maybe you should do
more listening. If you’re so good, then
you’ll stand out among other karaoke
hosts and become the “place to go”.
I’ve been a bar owner, and hosted
shows. There are certain methods that
should, or should not, be used. Sorry
Ace, but that’s a fact of life. Don’t piss
off the customers!
Disgruntled from having to go
to the end of the line when you are
turning in your first song is one thing.
Getting pissed off because the host
keeps putting new singers in front of
you is another.
