Amante hid behind a tree some 70 metres away from where<br />
<strong>the</strong> shooting happened. He asked two workers at a nearby<br />
plantation for help; however, <strong>the</strong>y ran away when <strong>the</strong>y saw that<br />
he had been pursued by armed men.<br />
Amante immediately phoned a friend for help. The friend<br />
rushed to h<strong>is</strong> location and took him to <strong>the</strong> hospital in San<br />
Marcelino. He was later transferred to <strong>the</strong> James L. Gordon<br />
Memorial Hospital in Olongapo City and underwent surgery. He<br />
was declared in a stable condition <strong>the</strong> following day; he sustained<br />
nine gunshot wounds.<br />
Agnes and Amante Jr.’s bodies were later found near <strong>the</strong><br />
motorcycle, still embracing each o<strong>the</strong>r. They were both shot in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir heads.<br />
Tirso Cruz: Labour leader shot after church<br />
Labour leader Tirso Cruz (33) was walking home from a church<br />
in Concepcion, Tarlac when gunmen riding on a motorcycle shot<br />
him dead on 17 March 2006. He suffered six gunshot wounds in<br />
different parts <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> body.<br />
Before <strong>the</strong> incident, Cruz had received a number <strong>of</strong> threats to<br />
h<strong>is</strong> life following a 2005 protest by labourers in Hacienda Lu<strong>is</strong>ita.<br />
Cruz was also actively involved in protesting against <strong>the</strong><br />
construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway project and<br />
<strong>the</strong> deployment <strong>of</strong> soldiers inside <strong>the</strong> hacienda. In <strong>the</strong> days prior<br />
to h<strong>is</strong> death, Cruz had led union members and residents in a<br />
protest calling for <strong>the</strong> withdrawal <strong>of</strong> soldiers deployed inside <strong>the</strong><br />
hacienda and for <strong>the</strong> expressway construction to be stopped.<br />
Residents inside <strong>the</strong> hacienda have been<br />
protesting against <strong>the</strong> quarry operations by<br />
project contractors in Barangay Asturias.<br />
Some 50 Cafgu members and soldiers<br />
attached to <strong>the</strong> 71st Infantry Div<strong>is</strong>ion,<br />
which was at that time under Major Gen.<br />
Jovito Palparan, were reportedly deployed<br />
in Barangay Pando, using <strong>the</strong> project<br />
management’s <strong>of</strong>fice as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
headquarters. The soldiers were allegedly<br />
being used to prevent any protest actions<br />
against <strong>the</strong> management.<br />

Arinque (39) and h<strong>is</strong> wife were buying goods<br />
at a market in Barangay San Roque,<br />
Mabini, Bohol. He waited for h<strong>is</strong> wife at a<br />
store owned by Tony Salaum, who was<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r with two o<strong>the</strong>r companions, one<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m was a member <strong>of</strong> Cafgu in Baragay<br />
Abaca.<br />
