Bedford alumna
appointed one of
the most powerful
women in Europe
» continued from front page
ers in all fields, and our motto ‘esse
quam videri’ - to be, rather than to
seem to be.”
Lady Ashton’s political ascendency
has been remarkably quick.
Graduating from Bedford College
(now part of Royal Holloway) in
1977 with a BSc in economics &
sociology the Baroness before Ashton
entering public service in 1998
as chairman of the Hertfordshire
health authority, a post she held
until 2001 when she became a junior
education minister where she
played a key role in establishing
the Sure Start network of children’s
centres. Appointed a peer in 1991, it
was not until 2007 that Lady Ashton
entered the cabinet as the leader of
the House of Lords. Within European
politics Lady Ashton has made
a considerable mark winning praise
for her competence and efficiency in
a political system often perceived as
being beset by red tape.
Political repercussions from the
sudden decisions that saw Tony
Blair drop out of the European limelight
(after he was beaten to the post
of President of the European Council)
and the promotion of Lady Ashton
have already begun. Questions
of Lady Ashton’s inexperience were
raised minutes after the news of her
appointment broke but were soon
countered by the baroness herself
saying; “Judge me by what I do and
I think you’ll be pleased and proud
of me...Am I an ego on legs? No, I’m
not.”
Lady Ashton takes office as “High
Representative for Foreign Affairs
and Security Policy” on 1st December.
Student home
ablaze in Egham
Catherine Nelms
Residents of Manorcrofts Road,
Egham, watched in shock last week
as three fire engines rushed to a student
house on fire.
At approximately 1am, local residents
were awoken by the sound
of police cars, ambulances, and fire
engines pulling up to the corner
of Rusham Road and Manorcrofts
Road. Eyewitness Lucy Haig a 2nd
Year Media Arts student described
the scene: “There was a lot of smoke
billowing out of the building. Police
had set up road blocks to stop
the traffic, and firemen were everywhere.
They broke down the front
door to the property and took their
hoses to it. I couldn’t see any flames
tf Newsdesk
but there was a lot of smoke.”
The fire had restarted after a previous
fire at the property begun at
approximately 4pm that day. It is believed
that at the time of the second
fire, the property was empty though
it is not yet known whether the residents
were harmed in either event.
The landlord to the property was
contacted and eventually arrived on
the scene some time after the fire
had started. At approximately 2am
the smoke had cleared and firemen
began to clear the building.
The cause of the fire remains unknown
however this incident serves
as a poignant reminder of the need
for students to ensure that they
take necessary precautions to guard
against fire
Tee off at Wentworth Golf Course
and it’s more than likely you will
be watched; not just by other golfers
but by a course official who, depending
upon your first shot may
discreetly ask you to leave. Playing
at Wentworth has always been
strictly, yet politely, reserved for the
best. Situated only a few miles from
campus Wentworth has, since its establishment
in 1936, stood as one of
the world’s most illustrious courses
tf Next deadline
and home to the PGA European
Tour. This year the same greens that
have challenged players such as Tiger
Woods and Nick Faldo will now
also play host to three Royal Holloway
students, winners of prestigious
Golf Bursaries.
Recipients of the award; Simon
Clement, Sebastian Schyberg, and
Jon Putman, all members of the Student
Talented Athlete Recognition
Scheme (STARS) will now be fully
entitled to use Wentworth’s three
championship courses and exceptional
sports facilities. For Jon Putman,
captain of the Holloway golf
team, this marks the second consecutive
year he has been awarded the
“absolute privilege” of the bursary
that he sees as fundamental in helping
develop his abilities and lowering
his handicap, a view shared by
his fellow players.
Speaking on the subject Acting
Principal Rob Kemp said, “We are
delighted that these aspiring golfers
will be able to develop their talent
for the game alongside their studies.
This is a unique opportunity
for students of Royal Holloway, and
we look forward to continuing our
close partnership with Wentworth.”
