dspModules
RTD offers a broad line of Digital Signal Processing Modules based on Texas Instruments’ high-performance DSPs. These specialized modules speed up math-intensive
operations permitting the CPU to manage other application specific tasks. dspModules also operate as stand-alone processors by using the on-board Flash memory to
store executable programs, thereby reducing overall system costs and power consumption when a CPU is not needed. All dspModules are programmable in C/C++ using
Texas Instruments’ Code Composer Studio and RTD’s dspFramework libraries to streamline software development. RTD offers dspModules in two configurations:
coprocessors and accelerators. The DSP Coprocessors are PC/104-Plus, and provide a passthrough ISA connector. This allows the dspModule to be located anywhere in
the system. The DSP Accelerators are PCI-104, and provide a PlatformBus to directly connect front-end cards to the dspModule.
Processors
RTD dspModules are based on the TMS320C6416 and TMS320C6202 DSPs operating at up to 1 GHz with
up to 256 MB of SDRAM. Flash memory is provided for user firmware. The processor interfaces to the PCI
bus to provide high speed data transfer. The DSP features the VelociTI advanced very long instruction words
(VLIWs) to supply up to eight 32-bit instructions to the eight functional units during every clock cycle. The
VLIW architecture only requires instructions to be stored for the functional units that are ready to execute.
I/O
Multi-Channel Buffered Serial Ports (McBSP ) provide extensive I/O bandwidth up to 100 Mb/s each. Selected
modules offer RS-232/422/485 Serial Ports, aDIO, and Stereo I/O using an AC’97 CODEC for additional
functionality. The SyncBus provides synchronization between cards. dspModules also include optional
direct stack-through connectors to RTD dataModules ® or additional DSP modules for parallel processing and
direct communication.
PlatformBus
Selected models allow up to four expansion cards via a PlatformBus. The PlatformBus provides a dedicated
32-bit bus that connects directly to the DSP, simplifying development of custom analog front-end cards to be
used with the dspModule Accelerator.
PlatformBus Features
• Buffered Asynchronous Memory Interface of the DSP allows direct interface to dspModule
• High speed data transfer between the DSP and the analog interface
provided by 32-bit address bus and 16-bit data bus
• Enables the rapid development of custom front-end for the dspModules
