police exercises and demonstrations with RCMP members
from the Detachment and other specialized units, including
the Police Dog Section and the RCMP (Air 1) helicopter.
Each participant also took part in a police-style drill march
and physical fitness training course, and went home with a
t-shirt, badge and a smile.
The Surrey RCMP helped organize the Lower Mainland
Youth Academy that took place between March 31 and
April 8. The annual Academy is designed to provide youth
interested in a career in policing with an opportunity to
experience police training and police work simulations.
Twenty-two grade 11 and 12 students from the Surrey
School District attended the camp, and all were presented
with their certificates of completion from the Officer in
Charge of the Surrey RCMP Detachment, who participated
as the Reviewing Officer.
Surrey RCMP Youth Section members also helped facilitate
a one-day Junior Police Academy for Muslim youth hosted
by the RCMP National Security Community Outreach
Program. Ninety-seven students from grades 3 to 7 at the
Surrey Muslim School participated in the program.
The Detachment partnered once again with the Surrey
School District to host the 19th annual Surrey RCMP Classic
high school boys basketball tournament. The tournament
included over 40 teams competing for the senior and junior
championship. In addition to tournament trophies for team
and individual play, eight scholarships were awarded to
assist students pursuing post secondary education.
The Surrey RCMP hosted the Fifth Annual Surrey RCMP
High School Hockey Jamboree in March. The Jamboree
consisted of three consecutive hockey games played by
members from Surrey detachment and students selected
from the 13 participating Surrey high school hockey teams
based on sportsmanship displayed during the high school
hockey season.
Surrey RCMP members continued to participate in the
Elementary School Sports Program, challenging local
elementary school students to basketball and hockey
games in their school gymnasiums. Prizes and trophies
are given to players and schools that show the best
sportsmanship and team spirit, and the games never fail
to draw large enthusiastic crowds.
The SPURS youth cadet program remained popular
among Surrey youth. In 2010, 42 youth participated
in the program. In addition to receiving leadership, first
aid and life-skills training, the cadets participated in the
Remembrance Day parade and helped out with various
Surrey RCMP community-policing events and programs.
The Surrey RCMP Youth Section introduced the “A
Step Beyond” program, modelled on a similar program
delivered by the Vancouver Police. The program invited
33 grade 10 and 11 students to the Detachment to hear
from a variety of speakers about policing, substance abuse
and gangs. The students were then partnered with police
officers for a day of interactive police experiences in areas
known for a host of social issues, including high crime,
gang activities and drug addiction. The students then
followed up this day with a presentation about what they
had learned to their home school (peers). The hands-on
program is designed to assist youth in making pro-social
choices and taking positive life paths.
Throughout 2010, General Duty (GD) members conducted
curfew checks for youth on probation. The initiative looked
to hold youth accountable to Court-imposed conditions
of behaviour, make them aware of the consequences of
curfew violations, and at the same time deter them from
further involvement in negative behaviours or criminal
activity. During the year, 112 curfew checks were
conducted by GD members. Additional curfew checks
were conducted by Youth Section members during the
summer months (when schools are not in session).
The Detachment participated in the Big Brothers Big
Sisters In-School Mentoring (ISM) Program. During the
year police officers and civilian staff volunteered their
time and were matched with children between the ages
of seven and 12 who have been identified as needing a
special friend and supporter in life. The nine Big Brothers
and Sisters from the Detachment spent an hour each week
with their Little Buddies, playing games, reading, creating
or simply hanging out and providing mentorship.
