FUSION FESTIVAL
The vast richness and diversity of
Surrey’s communities is on display
each June as the City centre is
host to BC’s largest multicultural
celebration. The Fusion Festival
weekend at Holland Park grows
in popularity each year, attracting
nearly 90,000 people keen on
celebrating the City’s rich diversity
with music, dance, food and culture.
The event includes distinguished
artists and headliners from around
the world performing on four
stages, as well as cultural pavilions
representing food and heritage of
over 50 distinct cultural groups. The
Detachment is proud to participate
in elevating awareness and
appreciation within our multicultural
community, while at the same time
promoting public safety.
TRAFFIC SAFETY

a dedicated full-time Criminal Crash Investigations Team
(CCIT) to take conduct of all fatal, serious injury and
other high profile traffic collision investigations. During its
first year of operation, CCIT members not only worked to
establish business rules and electronic file management
protocols consistent with major case management
principles and advanced investigative practices, but also
took the lead on 89 investigations, including 36 files from
2009. Surrey’s CCIT model has been recognized as a
leading practice by Crown Counsel and is being looked at
as a best practice by other RCMP jurisdictions.

collision intersections, speeding and other dangerous
driving practices, impaired driving and seatbelt compliance
in an effort to reduce the number of traffic injuries and
fatalities. As a result of these efforts, more than 22,144
violation tickets were issued by the Traffic Section (a 29%
increase from 2009). Furthermore, fatal motor vehicle
collisions were reduced by 29% in 2010.

assigned two ‘high crash’ intersections for enforcement
throughout the year. Monthly enforcement calendars
were established, with each team targeting intersection
enforcement at least once per block. As a result of
this initiative, Traffic Section dedicated 2,730 hours to
intersection enforcement, conducting 427 operations and
issuing 2,883 violation tickets.

intersection safety awareness and enforcement campaign
run in partnership with ICBC. During the month of June,
members conducted covert enforcement at intersections,
looking for red light runners, people driving without
seat belts, drivers using cellphones and other handheld
devices, and other traffic offences.

various traffic safety initiatives lead by the Traffic Services
Unit. Each Watch assigned members to undertake
proactive traffic patrols and enforcement, particularly
in high collision locations. As a result of these efforts,
GD checked 22,973 vehicles and issued 2,866 violation
tickets, notices and orders.

Counterattack enforcement initiatives. By year end, Traffic
Section members had dedicated 1,990 hours to impaired
driving operations and conducted 199 road checks,
resulting in 131 impaired driving charges.

driving workshops to the General Duty (GD) members
to encourage greater, proactive work in this area, which
resulted in increased detection and apprehension of
impaired drivers by GD. In 2010, GD recommended 633
charges for impaired driving and related offences.

to all major motor vehicle accidents, including those
collisions resulting in death and serious injury. In this
capacity they not only attended to personal injuries until
paramedics arrived, but also ensured continued scene
(and road) safety.
