AWARDS & RECOGNITION POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS Each year, the Surrey Board of Trade recognizes Surrey RCMP police officers, municipal employees and volunteers, as well as community organizations, for their outstanding contributions in the area of law enforcement and public safety. 2010 COMMANDING OFFICER’S AWARDS On April 22 2010, the RCMP in British Columbia held its annual Commanding Officer’s Awards ceremony to recognize the dedication and service of its members and employees in going above and beyond the call of duty. Surrey RCMP members and staff were once again amongst those who received Commanding Officer’s Commendations and/or medals for long service: COMMANDING OFFICER’S COMMENDATIONS LONG SERVICE AWARDS Staff Sergeant Dave Eidet Sergeant Laura Malo Corporal Sean McLaughlin Constable John Hanson A Watch, Surrey Detachment Operational Communications Centre (OCC Team of the Year) Staff Sergeant Heather Stark – 20 years Auxiliary Constable Terrance Robertson – 25 years BC POLICE HONOURS NIGHT Each year RCMP and municipal police officers who have performed an exemplary service to the citizens of British Columbia are honoured at a ceremony held at Government House. In November 2010, Constable John Hanson from Surrey Detachment was one of twenty-two officers to receive the Award of Valour, BC’s highest award for their acts of exceptional courage in the face of extreme hazard. Constable Hanson placed himself at personal risk in apprehending an armed suspect who had held six adults and three children in a residence. Sergeant Laura Malo received a Meritorious Service Award for her exemplary work ethic and dedication in a child abduction investigation. CPL MIKE SPENCER RECEIVING IODE AWARD SOLICITOR GENERAL CRIME PREVENTION AND COMMUNITY SAFETY AWARDS Each year the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General recognizes individuals, groups and programs that have made outstanding contributions to crime prevention and community safety. In 2010, three police officers from the Surrey RCMP were recognized: Staff Sergeant Ben Bentley received the Kenneth M. Lemckert Community Policing Award for his dedication to community policing in Newton; while Staff Sergeant Rob McCloy and Constable John Wilson were both recipients of the Wael T. Audi Youth Policing Award for their efforts and commitment to working with youth (with the SPURS and Surrey WRAP programs respectively). IODE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS AWARD The Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire’s (IODE) Police Community Relations Award recognizes outstanding voluntary community service given by a Member, Unit or Detachment of the RCMP. Each year the award is given to one member of the RCMP in BC. In 2010, Surrey RCMP Corporal Mike Spencer was honoured with this award for his outstanding volunteer work in the community, and in particular hiss ongoing commitment to the Elementary School Sports Program. BCAA TRAFFIC SAFETY FOUNDATION – ALEXA’S TEAM Each year the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation honours police officers for their exemplary efforts in the impaired driving enforcement and keeping drunk drivers off the roads. In 2010, Constables Raymond Lee, Vladimir Peh, Cory Kornicki and Corporal Lorne Lecker were among the 174 named to Alexa’s Team, struck in the memory of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer who was run down by a car in Ladner in 2008. CRIME STOPPERS AWARD At the 2010 Crime Stoppers Conference, Garry Calder, Detachment Quality Assurance manager, was presented with the Crime Stopper of the Year award. Through Gary’s efforts, Surrey Detachment led other police agencies with respect to the handling of Crime Stopper tips. 29 2010 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
