AND ABOUT US!
KALEIDOSCOPE
The website of the Kirmes & Park Revue
has now a new, modern look. Another
new feature is the magazine’s presence
on Facebook.
The layout of the website was completely
overhauled, is now more clearly designed
and correspondingly much more userfriendly.
From the start page, visitors are
able to reach all service sections relating
to the Kirmes & Park Revue direct, such as
the Kirmes-Shop, subscriptions, calendar
of events, not to mention an ample
selection of links to everything concerning
fair events and amusement parks. A few
days before each current magazine goes
to press, an overview of topics as well as
the title page of the upcoming issue is
The Kirmes & Park Revue
website in a new look
featured on the site. Additionally, there is
also a direct link to the service section for
English-speaking customers and interested
persons, as well as to other magazines published
by Gemi-Verlag (e.g. Sammler Journal
and Trödler magazine). Just one click on
the Kirmes & Park Revue homepage
(www.kirmesparkrevue.de) brings guests to
the magazine’s new Facebook presence,
which already received a lot of comments
and postings even in the first few days after
its launch. More than 600 users have already
clicked on "Gefällt mir” ("like”) – for which we
extend a hearty "thank you” from the Kirmes
The gimmicks called “Valentinesken” presented by
the Eckl firm at its “Shocker” Ghost Ride at the
Munich Oktoberfest were really funny.
For example, there was a "live television coverage from
the pitch-dark Ghost Ride”, as well as a explanation as
to why the "Shocker” is a "4 level Ghost Ride”. ■
REINER RUDOLPH
The singing ice cream
man, Reiner Rudolph
Text & Photos: Helmut Bresler
For 25 years, he has been
accompanied by his
guitar and for 15 years he
has played a hymn of
praise every year at the
opening of the largest
street event in Fürth,
Southern Germany.
Reiner Rudolph has music
in his blood and a perfect grasp of all the latest
catchy tunes. He is happy about the unflagging popularity
of his songs with the public, which are sung
in Franconia dialect, and he grins quietly to himself
about the pictures taken while performing, which the
visitors hand to him in the wagon. He also livened up
the "Romantic Night” at the Nürnberg Volksfest,
when he appeared as a singing salesman in the ice
cream van. With his sweets and ice cream van he
successfully tours throughout the northern part of
Bavaria and numbers among the regular participants
at his annual venues.
MOVIE SHUTTLE 4 D
Tedesco’s Simulator
“Virtual Movie Shuttle 4 D”
Vincenzo Tedesco with
his partner, Petra Schürmann
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
After the Mainz showman Vincenzo Tedesco had
sold his simulator to Marco Sottile more than a
year ago, he has now decided once again to buy
an attraction like this. He took over the
construction from an Austrian event management
firm.
The simulator construction, built on an articulated
lorry by a British manufacturer in 1999, was initially
operated by a showman enterprise from Karlsruhe
and later sold abroad. Once showman Tedesco had
brought the simulator back to Germany, he began
to completely overhaul the construction and redesigned
it into the "Virtual Movie Shuttle 4D”. To this
end, the complete electronic system was renewed,
before the operator stand and the simulator cubicle
was painted silver and covered with coloured foil.
Moreover, the electronic control for the movement
sequences of the cubicle was optimized and newly
programmed by an expert firm. During the première
at the Mannheim Oktobermess it was possible to
present four new 4-D films, among others "Cosmic
Coaster” and "Haunted Mine”. In the winter months
Tedesco wants to build a crossbeam for the front
section - just as on his first simulator. "Virtual Movie
Shuttle 4 D” has ground measurements of 15 x 4
metres and electrical requirements of 40 kW. All in
all, the cubicle with its comfortable shell shaped
seat can accommodate 14 people per showing. ■
Arrival of the Looping-
Coaster in Germany
The newly purchased Looping-
Coaster from Angelo Agtsch has
now arrived in Germany.
Immediately after the Munich Oktoberfest,
where Agtsch presented his
Walkthrough construction "Amazonas”,
the construction was transported
from Switzerland. The first destination
was a specialist paint shop in
Unterschleißheim, where the supports and the tracks were
painted in new colours. As is well-known, the coaster, which
had previously toured throughout Switzerland under the
name of "Xenox”, will be completely redesigned by Agtsch
and be toured under the name "Cobra” in the upcoming season.
This year, the construction will still be built up in Lemgo
and Detmold. During the winter
break, the theme will be changed to
the "Cobra” design. To this end,
elaborate polyester sections are
currently being produced at MP-
Design.
MAYEN-ANNIVERSARIES
Photo: Jasmin Franz
During the traditional showman reception on Friday
before the Lukasmarkt opening, the Deputy Mayor
Marika Kohlhaas honoured several showman
operations, which have been loyal participants at the
Volksfest in the Eifel town for decades.
Ssuch as Sonja Schunk from Kassel, who has been presenting
her "Pferde Derby” for 35 years. After the death of
her husband Paul in 2009, she continued to operate the
attraction together with her son. Her highly popular Pferde
Derby is an outright cult, and an indispensable 'must' at
the Lukasmarkt. The Wingender family from Mayen, closely
associated with the market event in their hometown, has
also been participating at the event for 35 years. Under
the management of their 60-year old boss Wolfgang, they
brought many novelties to Mayen, such as "Top Spin”,
"Flipper”, "Frisbee”, "Family Star”, and of late the "Ring
Renner” kiddie coaster, as well as the Glockenturmausschank
(bell tower beverage
outlet), together
with Toni Thoma. Son
Mario also participates
in the Lukasmarkt with
his "Breakdance” and
the "Air Crash”. Andreas
Kuhlmann from
Wuppertal with his fish
stall built up at the
Burgbrücke, was honoured
for his 45 th
Lukasmarkt anniversary.
The operation was built up by his father, and Andreas
Kuhlmann has been operating it himself for 10 years now.
Another anniversary was celebrated by the Lanser family,
who are also highly experienced in excellent gastronomy
– even though they joined this sector only in 2009. Father
Dieter had been presenting the kiddie ride on the market
square for 45 years now. When he passed away in 2007,
son Erik took over the attraction. Since 2009, he has enriched
the Lukasmarkt also with the "Lukas-Alm”. ■
The replacement
attraction, “Pirates Caribbean”
Stefan Traber presents
2013 the new Miami, “American
Trip”
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
Originally, Stefan Traber from Ludwigsburg
wanted to tour his new Miami “American Trip” as
early as the middle of this year; however, the
completion was delayed. He was, however, able
to present an attractive replacement ride.
The Woatt firm from Worms had provided him with
a construction called "Pirates Caribbean” as a replacement
up until completion of the "American
Trip”. With this attraction, Traber was able to appear
at the fairgrounds in Weigersheim (near Tauberbischofsheim),
Schönau/Odenwald, Rettigheim,
Fellbach, Filderstadt, and Neckargemünd. The
completed "American Trip” is now to go into operation
in the upcoming season. Every single seat will
be equipped with a locking device and overhead restraints
so that passengers get maximum ride fun
from the speed. As a result, rides are accelerated
and can reach a maximum speed of up to 28 rotations
per minute. "This will also be specified in the
ride book,” said Stefan Traber.
The construction (measurements: 14 x 6.50 m, 18
seats) is built on a 3-axle vehicle from the Pfaff firm.
Both the painting and a particularly elaborate and
modern lighting system is said to be unique. ■
MÜNSTER: HINDENBURGPLATZ OR SCHLOSSPLATZ?
Text: Michael Petersen
In March, a vast majority of the City Council
decided in favour of the large square in front
of the castle being renamed from “Hindenburgplatz”
to “Schlossplatz”. Apart from being
the venue for the t Send events and a circus
event, this area is mainly used as a coveted
city car park during the rest of the year.
As a number of Münster residents apparently did
not like the new name, they founded the citizens’
initiative "Pro Hindenburgplatz”, aiming at renaming
the Schlossplatz as Hindenburgplatz
once again. The initiative collected enough signatures
to bring about a local referendum. While
they justified their plan claiming the Hindenburgplatz
was a part of Münster’s history and the
renaming being tantamount to the loss of a piece
of the homeland, the opposing side countered
that to name of a street or a square after a person
was an honour to that individual, and the latest
historic findings about Paul von Hindenburg
ruled out the renaming of this attractive square
as Hindenburgplatz. After all, Hindenburg had
helped the future dictator, Hitler, come to power.
On 16 th September 2012, 40.3 percent of the
Münster citizens went to the polls, 59.4 percent
of which voted against the renaming back to Hindenburgplatz.
It was a good decision, even
though the name "Sendplatz” would certainly
have also been a good alternative. It remains to
be seen whether or not this referendum will have
any nationwide consequences. After all, there
are Hindenburg streets and squares in many
German cities; the island of Sylt, for example, is
only accessible via the Hindenburgdamm. ■
HILDESHEIM: VOLKS- AND SCHÜTZENFEST – THE END?
Hildesheim Schützenfest
– soon a thing of the past?
Impressions of the
Volks- and Schützenfest 2012
Text & Photos: Uwe Holzmann
The Volks and Schützenfest in Hildesheim has
probably been held on the Schützenwiese on
the Pappelallee from 15 th to 24 th June for the last
time this year – and it may well be over altogether
for the event.
As visitor attendance at the Volks and Schützenfest,
which had been held on the large fairground
"An der Lademühle” north of the railway embankment
for about 40 years, increasingly decreased
in the 1990s, it was decided in 2000 to relocate the
event from the Lademühle-fairground
to the Pappelallee (the
traditional and original Schützen
festival fairground) for a "trial
event” in 2001. Thanks to the
good reception the event received
in this location – and a repeated
success in 2002 – a 10-
year contract was entered into
with the city authorities for the
municipal property, and the
sports and event hall also located
at the Pappelallee was decorated
as a festival hall and incorporated into the
Schützenfest. As the 10-year contract has now expired,
the Volk and Schützenfest Hildesheim is
about to change again. From 2013 on, the organisers
in charge want to hold a combination of a city
and Schützenfest all around the city hall in the city
centre for only four days and without any large ride
attractions, but with new offerings and a 'historic
flair' instead. The regular showmen and others participating
at the Hildesheim Schützenfest every
now and then know that these plans actually
means the end for the traditional event based on
12
445 years of Schützen associations in Hildesheim.
Intensive discussions about the organiser’s new
plans in the local press showed that many
Hildesheim residents would like to continue celebrating
the Schützenfest in its current form. At a
number of showman attractions on the fairground,
petitions could be signed in favour of a continuation
of the event on the Schützenwiese and at the
festival hall. However, in the opinion of the chairman
of the Schützengesellschaft of 1367 and the
Jungesellenkompanie of 1881, the current form of
the event is outdated, and they want to hold on to
the plans for 2013. This year, the perhaps last Volk
and Schützenfest in Hildesheim, which used to be
highly popular among the showmen due not least
to the follow-on venues of Hannover, Goslar or
Peine, presented the following attractions: Ferris
Wheel (Kleuser), "Booster Maxxx” (Hoefnagel-Denies),
"Rocket” (Weber), "Freddy's Company”
(Hofmann-Jehn), "Breakdance” (Hainlein), "Disco-
Bahn” (Welte), "New World 3000” (Welte), "M-Power”
dodgem track (du Carrois), Schwanenflieger
(Benna), "World of Fantasy” (Bruch), "Super Mini
Jet” (Fick), "Car for Kids” (Wegener), "Saturn” kiddie
twister (Weber), and kiddie carousel (Heider).
Moreover, there was an ample selection of firstclass
operations from all sectors, which made the
Volksfest perfect fun. One can only hope that there
will be a future for a Hildesheim Volksfest, despite
the plans of the Schützen Association. ■
NEW PRODUCTS
KMG-NEWS
There is further news in addition
to the novelties from manufacturer
KMG that we reported on
in the EAS review in the October
issue of Kirmes & Park Revue.
Apart from the planned new
deliveries of already successful
constructions, the Dutch manufacturer
surprised the industry
with yet another novelty, the
“Inversion Park Swing”.
Test rides of the “Top
Spin” Inversion (for Andreasson,
Sweden, at KMG shortly
before delivery). Below: The
first “Sicko” ride “Air One
Maxxx” from Dominique
Lerendu will be followed by an
example for H.P. Maier in 2013
Text: Ralf Schmitt
Photos: KMG, Norman Vogt
A
"Freak Out” example was delivered
this November to Henry Danter’s Symond
Yat Leisure Park in Great Britain.
The list of planned new deliveries in the
first half of 2013 has now been
determined. The first will be a "Speed”
Propeller for RCS in the USA, and a
"Freak Out” for the De Weijer firm in the
Netherlands, followed by an "Inversion”
called "Avenger” for the Holzem firm
from Düren, Germany. This example is
designed by the Daniel Geibel studio.
Next, there will be the second "Sicko”
ride for H.P. Maier in Switzerland who,
as is well-known, also presents his ride attractions
regularly at Volksfest events in southern Germany.
And as apparently no German showman enterprise
has decided in favour of this ride type so far,
it may well be that the German première of this
kind of ride will be celebrated by the attraction
presented by the Swiss showman. After this, KMG
will make two deliveries to the USA; firstly, a "Freak
Out” for Frazier Shows and an "X-Factory” construction
for Fiesta Shows. The following two constructions
will go to Australia, a "Speed” for Goldenway
Amusements and a "Freak Out” for Pavier.
After that, another "Freak Out” swing will
leave the KMG premises in the Netherlands. The
customer is Butler Family Fun in the USA. According
to KMG-Sales Manager Peter Theunisz, there
are further orders and contracts (among others,
NEW PRODUCTS
KMG novelty: “Inversion
Park Swing” is available with
heights from 22 to 70 metres
Delivered in early November:
The “Freak Out” for Henry
Park in Great Britain
another "Speed” also for a US
customer), and KMG is
virtually "booked out” up until
May 2014. Apropos "Inversion”,
with the "Inversion Park
Swing” based on this successful
(forward-swinging)
construction, there is now a
version on offer that has been
designed for sites other than
Volksfest events. In comparison
to the "Inversion”,
this construction has been
equipped with only one
(stationary) gondola accommodating
8 passengers and
has a height of 22 metres.
Two constructions like this
have already been sold to
Austria, where they are to be
used in skiing areas and
popular tourist destinations
in the future. Optionally, KMG
also offers the "Inversion Park
Swing”, also boasting a
higher capacity as well as a
height of up to 70 metres. ■
PREMIÉRE
The first “Sicko” ride from
KMG: “Air One Maxxx” from
Dominique Lerendu
In the last few years, swings have
enjoyed something of a boom;
suspended swinging fun of all
sizes and variations can be experienced
at Volksfest events
everywhere. In late summer this
year, the latest swing variation,
called “Sicko” by its manufacturer
KMG, was added to the industry's
inventory. The first attraction
of this type celebrated
Lerendu, as this Freak Out was then shipped to
motor mounted onto
every gondola rotates
the gondolas slowly
throughout the ride.
This is a truly innovative
feature, intriguingly ensuring that passengers
are constantly facing a different way; sometimes
outwards, sometimes inwards towards the
centre, or from side to side. This, in combination
with the swinging movement, causes a queasy
feeling in the stomach, and generates excited
screams from the passengers. Before the run,
the flooring is hydraulically lowered, and then the
gondola group begins to rotate. With increasing
acceleration, the "V”-shaped main arm reaches
a height of up to 30 metres. The ride is powered
"Air One Maxxx”: The supports are painted in
green, yellow and purple, the "V-shape” (as the
purple stripes. The lighting elements were chosen
to match the colour plan and equipped with
appropriate LEDs. Moreover, LED spotlights are
used, mounted to the lighting masts, as well as
the ride centre and the uppermost crossbeam.
The backflash was painted with cheeky comic
motifs and symbols. The première in Arras was
followed by guest appearances in Noyon, Peronne
in this year’s tour were Dunkirk, Bethune, Pontoise
and Calais.
Ferris Wheel "Mirador
After a good two years of planning
and the following building
Angel Bañuls put his new Ferris
Wheel "Mirador Princess" into
operation in July this year at the
which according to the owner's
information reaches a height of
provide a colourful lighting display in the evenings.
Following the première location
of Pamplona, the attraction
was transported on
20 vehicles 1,000 kilometres
to the south to Malaga
in the province of Andalusia,
where the construction
caused a furore in
the regional media even before
its opening: as the festival
area is located not even
4 kilometres away from the
Malaga airport, there was a
problem. The Spanish aviation
authorities (AESA) did
not give the go-ahead to
continue build up of the
construction that was already
being set up. The
reason: as the wheel was to
be built up 20 metres above
sea level it would reach a
height of 85 metres – and
with that it would have been
20 metres too high to be able to fulfil aviation security
standards.
As the Ferris Wheel was almost completely built up (except
for the gondolas), and the festival area was
already filled with many other constructions, it was
opening of the Feria, a limited
permit was issued by the aviation
authorities, and the wheel
was allowed to be left standing
and operated until the end of the
event. During the festival, inbound
and outbound planes
were cautioned that a "large
object" was temporarily located near the airport. As the
press had reported in depth about the attraction and
also about the problems with the aviation authorities,
public interest in the "Mirador Princess" was huge, and
many visitors enjoyed the view over Malaga during the
Feria. Subsequently the wheel made a guest appearance
in Zaragoza, and then travelled onto the Spanish
capital Madrid, the destination of "Mirador Princess",
where it can be admired as a tourist attraction until the
end of the year.
The delight of the "Mirador Princess" owner
Miguel Angel Bañuls over the success of his
new Ferris Wheel was dulled on the 29 th September.
the Sanchez firm in 2008 and which he later completely
overhauled and equipped with LED lighting,
and received confirmation of up to 15
Luckily the fair – and with that the wheel –
were closed at the time that the tornado hit. However
there were still 35 wounded at the Feria:
showmen and their employees who were on the
Feria-grounds at the time.
“Booster Maxxx”,
“Inversion XXL” and “Star
Wars” in Roermond
In addition to the large top
Dutch events, such as
Tilburg, Weert and Eindhoven,
there are also a number
of small and mediumsized
fair events in the
Netherlands, some of which
can look back on a very long
tradition. In early June the
Kirmes & Park Revue visited
some of these events.
Holland-Tour
Roermond
The town of Roermond is located only a few kilometres
from the German-Dutch border. The town
is known for an outlet store selling reasonably
priced branded articles. Every year, the "Voorjaarskermis”
is celebrated in the town centre,
this year from 1 st to 7 th of June. The fairground attractions,
including several novelties for Roermond,
were built up on a number of different
sites, including the Graf-Geraldstraße.
With the "Inversion XXL” one
of the novelties was to be seen spinning
high up into the skies, clearly visible
from afar. Another novelty was
the "Jumper Jumper” - one of the countless
"bouncing rides” - having become quite trendy
in Holland for some time now. Moreover, visitors
34

were able to enjoy the fun-combination "Fun
House” and "Fire Department”. Walking along
the pedestrian precinct visitors reached the next
fairground occupied by the "Deca Dance”
Breakdance and the "Speedway” Caterpillar
Ride. The third fairground accommodated the
well looked after "Beach Polyp”, the "Buggy
Ride” Fun Train and various other attractions.
Only a few metres further on, the towering
"Booster Maxxx” served as a direction sign to another
amusement area that also presented a
chain ride, the "Heartbreaker”, "Star Wars” and
the "Temple of Adventure” Walkthrough construction.
Sliedrecht
Even though most of the Dutch fair events are
city-centre fairs or held at least near city centres,
there are some exceptions - such as Sliedrecht
with a fairground located relatively far from the
town centre. This year, the rides made their
“Crazy Machines” Funhouse
and a nostalgic Galloper
SPECIAL
“No Limit”, and one of many
from Rotterdam from 6 th to 13 th June. At the time
of our visit, visitor attendance at the "De Lockhorst”
fairground was quite modest. Built up
were the "Chaos” swing, "Breakdance”, the "No
Limit” Propeller, the "Cycloon” Caterpillar Ride,
and the "Sound Factory” dodgem track along
with "The Crazy Machines”, representing the
Walkthrough construction sector. Moreover, a
number of kiddie rides were placed in the middle
of the fairground. Younger visitors could also
enjoy Walking-Waterballs, Star Jump, Mini Cars,
and a kiddie ride.
Nijkerk
The fair in Nijkerk, held on the fairground at the
Winkelcentrum from 6 th to 13 th June, presented itself
as a small but exceptional event. In addition
“Breakdance 3” and a
from Ordelmann, along with the "Ghost Castle”
Ghost Ride, the "Indiana Jones 2” Walkthrough
construction (coming to the Netherlands from
France last year), and the "Rally 2002” dodgem
track. The younger visitors enjoyed a kiddie ride
and the "Mini Cars”. The highlights in the supporting
programme included the fireworks display
on 8 th June as well as the so-called "Eurotag”,
which enticed visitors with special offers on
closing day.
Deurne
The fair event in Deurne was held from 8 th to 12 th
June. The attractions were built up in the city
centre, on the Visser and the market square, as
well as on the Kerk and Molenstraße, with the
streets and square being connected to each
other with countless stalls and snack booths. It
was possible to engage three novelties for
Deurne this year; namely the "Surf Party”, the "Ice
Jet” Alpine Bob and the "Donkey Kong” climbing
garden. On the market square, visitors could
enjoy the novelty "Surf Party” and the "Beach Par-
built up not far from the "Breakdance”, and
the "Cocoon” Caterpillar Ride, offered over-thetop
enjoyment. There was also a classic "Cake
Walk” Funhouse featuring new front artwork.
During a ride in the "X-Factory” Miami, not one
passenger stayed dry. Built up slightly hidden
behind the "Ice Jet” was a "Bungee-Trampoline”
as well as a "Walking-Waterballs”. A dodgem
track, a kiddie ride and a nostalgic ride rounded
off the selection of attractions.
Deventer
The "Zomerkermis” (this year from 2 nd to 10 th
June) is built up on a number of streets and
squares in the city area. The most prominent attractions
offered this year were the "Mega Booster”
Propeller, the "Katapult” Bungee-Ball and the
"Happiness” Ferris Wheel. Other attractions presented
were the family coaster "Goldmine-Express”
and the "Crazy Mouse”. Additionally, this
year’s novelty ride "XLR8” demonstrated the
speed at which a passenger
gondola can be
accelerated at a 90° angle.
It was fascinating
for spectators to see
how quickly passengers
experienced a true
'speed' thrill. Visitors
were additionally enticed
by a dodgem
track, the "Thriller”
Ghost Ride, "Movie
Mannheim.
It is a rustic wooden
booth with ground measurements
of 4.50 x 2.50
from Pirmasens,
and then rewired and
equipped by Koch. It is
the first enterprise for the
young showman, who
currently is still studying and has already gained
experience in the touring gastronomic sector at
his father’s snack booth. Christian Koch plans to
present his "Brathäusel” mainly at events in
Baden-Württemberg and the Rhineland-Palatinate.
In addition to sautéed mushrooms, the menu
provides for baguettes and, as a special
delicacy, "Alm-Kartoffeln” potatoes with a variety
of sauces, as well as shishkebab.
The Düsseldorf showwoman
Susann Hoppe has
been touring her new snack
booth since the summer of
2012. After many years of
continuous operation, the
time had come for the
successful predecessor to
go into retirement.
The some 8-metre long and
more than 4-metre deep
wagon was built by Michael
Sobotta. Particularly striking
is the vividly coloured brush
painting of the façade, which was carried out by Wolfgang
Büren. Due to the generous counter section, the presentation
of the goods has been significantly improved. Customers
can now watch the preparation of dishes and duly
whet their appetite. The menu focuses on delicious
sautéed potatoes, or potatoes Americaine, served with
different side dishes, passionately enthused about even
by her colleagues: "At Susann’s you get potato sauté just
like mother used to make it,” is a proclamation that can
be heard repeatedly! This also classic German dish is not
only served with cucumber and fried egg, but also with
herring dip or black pudding. It goes without saying that
fried chips as well as the quintessentially German
bratwurst and currywurst are also on offer.
Michael Petersen
At this year’s Beeck
Fair in their hometown,
Jeffrey and
Chantal Schneider
from Duisburg presented
their new speciality
snack booth,
“Frittuere”, offering
specialities from Belgium
and focusing,
quite naturally, on
“delicacies created
from potatoes”.
Potatoes are a basic foodstuff and a truly indispensable
"must” in German cuisine. The
classics are boiled potatoes or jacket potatoes,
but also contrivances such
as potato pancakes, potato soup
or fried potatoes – and naturally
deep-fried chips. The Schneider
family now serves original Belgium
chips, made from fresh
potatoes in different serving
sizes. Customers can choose between
21 original Belgian sauces
– from mild and spicy to hot – to
go with the chips. The menu even
offers the original Belgian speciality
frikandel, a sort of minced-meat hot dog,
also served with a choice of various sauces or
fresh onions. The speciality snack booth was
largely built by the Schneider family themselves,
who chose the "Belgian” style that
matched the product range: A generous open
design with a slightly smaller front. The snack
booth is 7 metres long, 4.10 metres high, and
2.5 metres deep, with the MP Design firm responsible
for design and decoration. More
than 2,000 LEDs provide the perfect lighting for
the snack booth, which has been painted in
deep red and yellow colours. The booth has
been equipped with the latest technical appliances,
and built-in cooling cells guarantee
maximum hygiene and fresh products. ■
family Bausch has already toured with an ice cream stall
in the past. Apart from classic ice cream variations and
the defining "Eismohr” chocolate glacé, the menu also includes
slush in different flavours, appealingly presented
in the front section. The tour schedule of the "Eis Clown”
regularly includes, among others, venues in Bühl, Rastatt,
Crailsheim, Stuttgart, and Heilbronn.
Many novelties built up on the fairground as well as
a historic section with many nostalgic attractions
were the most prominent characteristics of the
“200 years Gäubodenvolksfest in Straubing”
anniversary event, held from 10 th to 20 th August.
Despite the anniversary, no new
record-breaking visitor numbers
could be achieved. With 1.35 million
people, visitor attendance almost
matched last year’s level.
There were several debutantes at
the Volksfest such as, among
other attractions, "The Game” (Weber),
"Big Bamboo” (Hempen), the
"Super Gaudi” Miami (Sonntag),
"Flip Fly” (Claus), "Rotor”
(Pluschies), and the "Cyber
Space” Propeller (Kaiser). Even
though the organiser Max Riedl declared the historic
section created to mark the anniversary a success, he
emphasized in his review that "many visitors only
strolled through the historic section”. As a result
turnover there did not fully live up to expectations. The
historic section accommodated hand-picked nostalgic
attractions such as, among others, a nostalgic
Ghost Ride, Hexenschaukel, Toboggan, Wall of Death,
Caterpillar Ride, multi-storey carousel, labyrinth,
44
A LOOK BACK
nostalgic Ferris Wheel, and the "Fahrt ins Paradies”,
supplemented by exhibited historic caravans and tractors.
Placed unfavourably opposite each other were
the "Kristallpalast” and the Toboggan. Even the "dividing
line” (with directions the normal visitor could not
understand) hurriedly put up by the organizer between
the two attractions was no remedy. Moreover, it would
have been a good idea to put up banners at the entrances
to the nostalgic section – as it was, the otherwise
really very beautiful nostalgic area could not really
be appreciated by the visitors, and there was no
separation between the Volksfest and the "Ostbayernschau”
exhibition. There were also inconsistencies relating
to the book published to mark the anniversary,
"A Trumm vom Paradies – 200 Jahre Gäubodenvolksfest
Straubing”, which was no longer available at the
organiser’s information and merchandising stalls when
the event was already half-way through, nor could it be
ordered either. When asked for books, the staff at the
stalls astoundingly answered "... there are still some examples
left, but they are intended for the staff and cannot
be sold.” Given this, a glance at two open pages
of the book in the shop window of the Wochenblatt in
the Straubing town centre was all that many a potential
buyer of the anniversary book could experience.
What a pity.
The Bad Vilbel Markt 2012 was held from 18 th to 26 th
August. It is not only the most important Volksfest
in the southern Wetterau (Hessen), but also one of
the most traditional markets. The mixture of bric-abrac
and cattle market as well as a fair, attracted
several thousands of visitors this year.
The market always opens on the Saturday before the
third Sunday in August and lasts up until the following
Sunday. However, it is closed on Wednesday and
Thursday. The cattle market is always held on Tuesday,
and numbers among the highlights of the event. In the
afternoon of the opening day, the festival procession
proceeded from the Rittenweiher to the market square
before the opening of the event by Mayor Dr. Thomas
Stöhr with the traditional tapping of the keg inside the
Hausmann beer tent. Yet even at that moment, many
rides were already making their rounds. Among the
outstanding attractions this year there were Göbel’s
Ferris Wheel and Lagerin’s "Luxor”; both providing their
passengers with a truly magnificent view. Other attractions
presented were the "Wilde Maus”, Geisler’s
"Jaguar”, Roie’s "Taumler” and the "Breakdance” from
Müller. Moreover, visitors encountered Kollmann’s "Top
Spin 2”, Lagerin’s "Virus” providing swinging fun,
Schramm’s "Phaenomenon” as a novelty, and the
"Kristallgrotte” Labyrinth from Klünder. The younger
visitors enjoyed an ample selection of kiddie rides.
Apart from the large beer tent from Hausmann, there
were also several cosy beer gardens that served the
Hessen speciality "Äppelwoi” cider. Among the highlights
of the programme there were the Family Day on
Friday and the brilliant fireworks display that magically
conjured up colourful figures in the sky. ■
The 596 th largest Weinfest in the world (7 th to
17 th September), enjoyed perfect conditions
for the staging of this event. Due to wonderful
late summer weather with pleasantly
warm temperatures, visitors besieged the
Brühlwiese fairground in droves.
As a result, the more than satisfied fairground
director Roland Poh was even able to proudly
announce record-breaking visitor numbers in
his review of the event. After the official opening,
the nine-day event was once again entirely
dedicated to wine. The guests had a difficult
choice between 292 different white and red
wines this year. All in all, 685,000 visitors –
some 35,000 more than last year – were registered,
and about 340,000 litres of wine or wine
spritzer were served. Visitor numbers would
certainly have been even higher if one had also
counted the two days (Wednesday and Thursday)
when the fairground was closed, but 18
Schubkärchler (wine outlets) and a number of
snack booths were open, there could rightly
have been another 10,000 to 15,000 guests
added.
In addition to well-known and traditional attractions,
the giant "Konga” Swing (Küchenmeister),
"Haunted Mansion” (Hinzen), as well
as the two Walkthrough constructions "Future
(Häsler) enticed the public to the fairground. ■
WÜLFRATH
Text & Photos:
Michael Petersen
The 83 rd Wülfrath Schützenfest incorporating the traditional
Angerkirmes was a very successful event.
From 7 th to 10 th September, both the Schützen showmen
and visitors celebrated a peaceful festival in
front of the Wülfrath town hall.
The Schützenverein Wülfrath 1929 e.V. with its Chairman
Axel Pau,l is the organising body of the event, which was
for the first time organised by the member of the
Schützenverein and herself a show-woman, Dagmar
Osselmann, who committed herself whole-heartedly to
the festival as well as contributing many fresh ideas, expertise
and reliable planning. Years ago, the Schützenfest
was celebrated inside and outside the civic centre.
When it became known that the civic centre was to be
demolished, those responsible for the event began looking
for a new site for the festival. Initial plans to celebrate
outside the town centre were dropped however, and the
Schützenfest ultimately came to be held together with
the Angerkirmes. As a result, celebrations only took
place inside a vast tent in front of the town hall for the
first time last year. This year, there has again been a
combination-event (whereas previously the civic authorities
had engaged the Schützenverein to organize
both the Schützenfest and the Angerkirmes separately).
As a result, a large beer tent was built up on the
meadow in front of the town hall for the first time, while
the ample offer of showman attractions occupying the
terraced area in front of the town hall provided for a
proper fairground atmosphere. On the lower level, the
"Beach Party” (Milz), kiddie ride (Schmelter), as well as
the "Diamond” dodgem track (Hartkopf/Osselmann)
enticed the public. Moreover, the "Power Dancer” (Langhoff)
and the "Crazy Dancer” (Freiwald) offered visitors
varied ride fun, and directly in front of the town hall, the
kiddie ride from Katy Bruch made its rounds. Different
concession stalls of every kind rounded off the attraction
contingent. Nonetheless, the Angerkirmes could
well do with two further rows of side stalls.
The event was opened by the Wülfrath Mayor Dr. Claudia
Panke in the presence of numerous guests, who
were pleased with the free gingerbread hearts that were
widely distributed. The Schützenfest offered a variety of
festivities. On the opening day, the U-30 ("over 30's” party)
enticed the public to the beer tent, and a magnificent
fireworks display was held in the late evening. On Saturday,
there was the procession of the "royal couples”, the
award ceremony for committed members, as well as the
coronation of the new "Schützen King”. On Sunday, the
expansive Sunday concert was held, and from 3 p.m.
the festival procession wound its way through Wülfrath.
While the Schützenfest was closed with live music in the
evening, the fair event went on up right up until Monday
evening. On the final day, the designated Family Day,
prices were reduced. Summary: Combining the
Schützenfest and the fair event was the right decision.
The site of the beer tent is just perfect. Fairy lights and
pennants put up in the outdoor area of the tent would be
a good idea, as the outer façade of the tent was bereft
of decoration. Moreover, advertising has to be intensified;
this year there was no poster advertising at all. ■
The Haan Kirmes (from 22 nd to 25 th September)
was unfortunately marred by a single adverse
weather situation.
The event was opened in beautiful sunny weather
at the Ferris Wheel from Bruch-Schneider as usual.
During the official opening, free beer was served,
and after a three-cannon salute, the rides made
their rounds in the town centre once again.
53
A LOOK BACK
“Shake”, “Konga”, and
“Voodoo Jumper” in Haan
Immediately after that, the event proceeded to run
at full speed, and the long queues that formed in
front of rides, snack booths, and other fair attractions
engendered high spirits among the showmen.
The build up in the individual fairground sections
fully matched our predictions. Well worth mentioning
is that the market with the "Voodoo-Jumper”
placed on the fountain in the centre and the mega
swing "Konga”, was prominently occupied. These
attractions were virtually besieged on all four days.
But other sections of the Haan Kirmes were also
very well occupied and very well attended. A highturnover
Saturday was followed by a Sunday with
even higher visitor traffic, when the event reached
its capacity limit. After the fantastic weekend, the
fairground had to be closed from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
for security reasons for the first time in its history.
The visitors were asked to leave the fairground, and
the showmen closed their attractions – some of
them gnashing their teeth with frustration. The reason
for this extraordinary measure was a storm with
strong winds of force eight forecast by the German
meteorological service that very morning. As most
of the visitors were not frightened off by the storm,
it was possible to reopen the fairground when the
storm died down at about 6:30 p.m., and the town
centre quickly filled up again. Business in the afternoon
hours on closing day was quite modest. Visitors
rushed to the town centre only for the fireworks
display, but their numbers were considerably less
than during previous years. Despite the temporary
closure on Monday and noticeably lower turnover
on the last opening day, the Kirmes 2012 was a successful
and strong-turnover event.
Foraine”, celebrated in Huy in August, does not
have to hide behind the coat tails of the event in the
capital. A number of streets are closed to road traffic
so that numerous ride and funhouse attractions,
as well as gastronomic operations and sales stalls,
can be built up. The large attractions are spread
over the Quai d’Arona square, as well as on the
Delchambre, Godin Parnajon, and Lebeau streets,
boasting in part a large number of trees and providing
a terrific flair. The spacious fairground is
located directly next to the Maas River and on the
other side there is the city centre with numerous retail
outlets. This year, the Fete Foraine was held from
10 th to 26 th August, with the "G-Force” Propeller,
making a first-time appearance in Huy in this version,
being announced as the novelty attraction. In
the entrance area, a Ferris Wheel was joined by a
beautiful ride called "Rallye Enfantin” and the "Karting”
go-kart track. Further along the course, visitors
encountered the classic "Bayernkurve”, built up under
several trees. Slightly moved back from the
course was the "Delta Plane” as well as a kiddie
Ferris Wheel. Turning left visitors reached a Switchback,
the "Coco Bongo” swing, and the "Katapult”.
Back on the main street there were a dodgem track,
the kiddie walkthrough construction "Mini Jones”,
the "Take Off”, as well as the "Big Apple” track ride.
Another large site at the end of the main street accommodated
the "Monster” (Polyp), the aforementioned
"G-Force”, the "Shaker”, as well as a
compressed air ride and an older Chair-o-Plane
placed in the centre of the site. Not far from there,
visitors encountered an amusing and probably
unique ride construction, the "Junior Cross” – a ride
with small motorcycle mounts, which have probably
been built by the owner himself - and noticeably
providing younger visitors with a lot of fun. From the
last large site another thoroughfare led visitors back
past a Mirror Maze, the "New Dance”, another
dodgem track and the "Swing” Matterhorn, which
was presented as a convertible version in Huy. In
addition the "American Toboggan” slide, visitors
also encountered the three-level walkthrough construction
"Caribies Folies” before they came back
to the starting point at the Ferris Wheel. ■
Tilburg Fair 2012
Impressions of the
Text & Photos: Ralf Schmitt
At the end of the Tilburg Fair 2012 (20 th to 29 th
July), fairground director Joost Möller was
able to announce new record-breaking visitor
numbers: some 1.6 million people celebrated
the largest fair in the Netherlands!
Möller talked of a "fantastic fair”, not least due to
the very good weather it enjoyed this year. In addition
to top attractions from Holland, there were
a number of prominent operations from abroad
once again, underlining the event’s international
reputation. Guests from Germany were the Looping
Coaster "Teststrecke”, "Take Off” (Ruppert),
"Psychodelic” (Häsler), and the "Bayern-
Rutsch’n” (Schierenbeck). From Great Britain
there were the Zierer Star Shape "Air” as well as
the KMG round ride "Speed Buzz", and appearing
in Tilburg now for the second time was the "Infinity”
Mondial Propeller from Delaporte from
France. A previously planned Tilburg première
had to be cancelled though; the "Turbine” was
able to celebrate its première only at the Park
Hilaria in Eindhoven – immediately after the
Tilburg Fair. There was a slightly excessive representation
of coasters at the Tilburg Fair 2012,
as a not yet completed track ride was replaced
58
y another Reverchon Rotating Mouse, but considering
the visual appearance of the latter, it
would have been better to do without. The faded
colours and rusty tracks of this construction could
hardly be ignored. Apart from the aforementioned
major rides, the Ferris Wheel (Vallentgoed), "Inversion
XXL” (Ordelman), "Booster Maxxx”
(Hoefnagels-Denies), "Around the World” (vd
Beek), as well as the "Mission Space” (Kroon)
formed an impressive skyline at this year’s Tilburg
Fair. At the meeting of participating showmen
there were heated discussions about the new
future schedule that those responsible for the fair
had earlier proposed for the event. The new date
was no longer to clash with the largest fair on the
Rhine in Düsseldorf, increasing Tilburg’s chance
of engaging top attractions from Germany. This
suggestion met with resistance (mainly from the
Dutch showmen), and was not pursued further (at
least for the time being), as could be seen when
the call for bids for the Tilburg Fair 2013 was published,
giving 19 th to 28 th July as the event’s date.■
MINIATURE FAIRGROUND AT BAD KREUZNACH JAHRMARKT
For the first time, visitors to
the Bad Kreuznach Jahrmarkt
were able to visit a
miniature fairground exhibition
– free of charge – during
the first three opening days
(17 th to 19 th August) this year.
The miniature exhibition in Bad
Kreuznach was very popular
with the public
The event was organised by the Bad Kreuznach
Showman Association, and appeared adjacent
to the commodity market, where showman Werner
Rohleder had provided his premises and the hall
belonging to it for the exhibition. Prior to the event,
several model builders had been contacted, who
then brought their models to Bad Kreuznach. Andreas
Ciupek from Rüsselsheim presented his diorama
of the Cannstatt Volksfest in Stuttgart: the fruit
column and the entrance areas to the tents as well
as, among other attractions, a Freefall tower, Ghost
ride, Walkthrough construction, and Flipper. Stephan
and Uwe Hirschfeld from Bad Arolsen presented,
among other creations, their models "Cortina
60
Jet” and "Schlittenfahrt”. The models
were surrounded by numerous walls
with many colourful ride chips. Frank
Müller from Moers exhibited his 1:24
scale "Musik Express” model, which
enjoyed much attention. On a scale of
1:14.5, the "Krake” from Uwe and Christopher
Rodloff from Salzgitter was the
largest model presented. Another
miniature fairground was displayed by
Martin Jakubith from Ansbach. During
the three days, there were many Jahrmarkt
visitors who enjoyed the varied
and sophisticated exhibition. Moreover,
the exhibition included several
nostalgic fairground props as well as
historic showman traction units. ■
For the European Showman Union, the
European Parliament in Brussels is one of
its central contact points. For many years
now important contacts to parliamentary
trade experts have been made here, and
discussions with the delegates and representatives
of the European Commission have
been undertaken. And so it was natural
that the 37 th
ESU-Congress took place in
the European capital this year.
Vice President Nicole Vermolen, Honorary President Heimo Medwed, President Albert Ritter, Honorary
Ambassador Jany de Vries, Vice President Frank Delforge, General Secretary Steve Severeyns,
Vice President Charles Senn, Vice President Russel Perks, Deputy General Secretary Jos Abrahams (f.l.)
of the Belgian Government, and described
it as a good example for neighbouring
European countries.
Minister Laruelle expounded further that
the new national middle class provisional
law now also gives showmen entitlement to
a basic pension from the year 2014.
For her commitment to the benefit of the
Belgian showman industry, Sabine Laruelle
was presented with the ESU Golden
Carousel Horse by The President of the
Belgian Showman Association La Défense
des Forains Belges, and representative of
the Belgian Government, Walter Dotremont.

ESU-General Assembly in European Parliament.
The European Parliament offered optimal
conference conditions for the 80 representatives
of national ESU associations. The
organisation of the congress lay in the experienced
hands of Belgian showman colleagues,
who made sure of a smooth execution
of events together with European
showman youth.
The Belgian guest of honour Sabine Laruelle,
Federal Minister for the self employed,
mid-sized companies, KMU, and agriculture,
was the first to speak to the participants.
She gave information about a new
law that prohibits the practice of up until
now, of the auction of Volksfest sites. President
Albert Ritter welcomed the decision
In addition to the presidium elections,
there were quite a number of current industry
themes on the agenda, among
others the cultural recognition of the
Volksfests in Europe, education, environmental
zones, and safety standards. There
were also discussions about the current
transport problems of showman colleagues
in Ireland, Finland, and Sweden, as
well as other focal points.
Lighning McQueen is
the star of Cars and makes
all little kiddie heart beat
faster…
June 15 th marked the grand reopening
of “Disney California
Adventure”. The event marked
the culmination of a 5 year,
billion dollar project to completely
revamp the heavily criticised
park.
…and the hearts of all
family members beat faster on
the star attraction “Radiator
Springs Racers”
Cars Land
The park, which only opened in 2001, quickly
became somewhat of an embarrassment for
the Disney company. Guests were unhappy with
the quality of the park and complained about the
lack of association with Disney characters. Most
rides had a Californian theme rather than a
Disney one, and in some cases the theming was
barely noticeable. Simply put, the park was
ordinary and lacked the usual Disney magic.
A driving force behind originally building
“Disney's California Adventure” was to turn
“Disneyland” into a multi day resort, leading to an
increase in overnight stays and a boost to
Disney's lucrative hotel market. But this didn't
happen. The park was, at best, somewhere one
went for a couple of hours, especially if the next
door “Disneyland” was really busy. So in 2007 it
was announced that there was to be a massive investment
program to rescue and transform the
park. With a budget of $1.1Billion, the investment
was almost double that spent on originally constructing
the park.
The “Paradise Pier” area of the park has been
completely transformed, losing the appearance of
a modern seaside resort in favour of a Victorian
period image. Many of the area shops and
carnival games have been replaced by family style
food outlets. The loop of the coaster “California
Screaming” from Intamin had its famous Mickey
ears removed, with the big cheese reappearing
on “The Sun Wheel”. With Mickey's smiling face
replacing the golden sun on its central hub, the 48
metre giant wheel became “Mickey's Fun Wheel”.
66
The first of the big additions was “Toy Story Midway
Mania”, which opened in June 2008. The interactive
shooting ride with 3D projections opened just a
couple of weeks after an identical version opened
in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Four years on, the
ride still attracts some of the biggest queues in the
park, although this is partly down to the relatively low
ride capacity.
The “Orange Stinger” Wave Swinger from Zierer,
with the only theming of a giant orange that surrounded
the ride became “Silly Symphony Swings”.
Re-opening in 2010, the ride is based on the 1935
cartoon "The Band Concert" where Mickey Mouse
tries to conduct an orchestra for an outdoor concert.
The ride starts to the sound of the William Tell Overture
and changes into the music from the tornado
sequence in the cartoon. Even though the Wave-
Swinger was somewhat unique in a half open orange
peel, the little details and extras mean that the
ride is now far more appropriate to a Disney park.
Based on “Sir Hiram Maxim's Flying Machines” at
“Pleasure Beach Blackpool”, “The Golden Zephyr”
suffered from lots of down time. When stopping, the
cars would often bump quite hard, and it couldn't
operate in high winds. While the ride may still appear
the same, a great deal of work was done to increase
the ride's reliability and to allow the ride to
operate in higher winds.
The new theme area of
“Cars Land” has its own
“Mater's Junkyard
Jamboree” is, due to its
theming, hardly recognisable
as a modern version
of the Whip-the Whip
“Luigi's Flying Tyres”
came into being based on the
historic Disneyland attraction
“Flying Saucers”
In 2010 the park's first night time show made its
debut. “World of Colour”, a never seen before
show, uses 1200 water fountains, projections,
lasers and pyrotechnics to bring many Disney
characters to life. Costing $75million, the show
lasts for 25 minutes and has been changed a
number of times since its debut to incorporate
new characters and movies that are popular at
the time. Another new addition was “The Little
Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure” Darkride
which opened in 2011 in time for the parks 10 th
anniversary. The ride is built on the site of a theatre
which previously showed the “Golden
Dreams” movie that starred Whoopi Goldberg.
The ride uses the Omnimover ride system and
takes guests past various scenes featuring
animatronics characters.
After a 9 month rehab, the “Mulholland Madness”
Wild Mouse from Mack Rides was transformed
into “Goofy's Flying School”, reopening in July
2011. The Mack Rides coaster lost the Californian
theme, and was replaced by a fun cartoon
theme befitting a pilot training school run by the
clumsy Disney character.
The Best Saved for Last
But, as one would expect, Disney saved the best
part of the project till last. Following the grand
reopening, visitors first enter “Disney California
Adventure” to find themselves on “Buena Vista
Street”, a tribute to the streets of LA in the 1920's
and 30's. It's the park's answer to “Disneyland's
Main Street USA”. Here guests will find a number
of period style buildings housing shops and
food outlets and most notably the “Carthay
Circle Theatre”, a reconstruction of the cinema
where Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was
first shown. When it premiered in 1937, Snow
White was Walt Disney's first full length animat-
68
ed movie. Running up and down “Buena Vista
Street” and along to the “Tower of Terror” are the
“Red Car Trolleys”, another tribute to California
at the time Walt Disney began making cartoons.
But the part of the grand reopening that everyone
had been waiting for was “Cars Land”. The
new flagship area of the park, and unquestionably
the most anticipated attraction of the past five
years is already proving to be a monumental
success. Several weeks after opening the flagship
ride, “Radiator Springs Racers”, is still seeing
waiting times in excess of three hours. Despite
the lengthy queues, guest surveys are reportedly
revealing “Cars Land” is getting a 100%
approval rating, something completely unheard
of for any previous attraction at any Disney park.
Ground breaking for “Cars Land” took place in
July 2009 and since then the 38 metre high tall
peaks of the “Cadillac Range” mountains have
grown to a point where they are visible pretty
much throughout the park. As well as being
home to three rides, “Cars Land” features
severa fantastically themed restaurants and
shops. Now that the park is opening at the much
earlier time of 8 a.m., it typically used to be
10a.m. “Flo's V8 Cafe” is the place to head for
some breakfast. While “Cozy Cone Motel” is
where each of the cone shaped outlets sells a
different treat, including pretzel bites, ice cream,
and novelty flavoured popcorn such as bacon
and cheddar, or salt and vinegar.
“Luigi's Flying Tyres”, is an unusual ride where
guests sit in one of 21 large tyres which float on
air provided by 6714 nozzles. The ride is homage
to the “Flying Saucers” attraction from Arrow
which operated at “Disneyland” from 1962 to
1966 and is one of the most missed rides of that
era. To control the movement of the tyres, riders
must lean their weight in the direction they want
to travel. Unfortunately the ride isn't as exciting
The theme park also
received a new entrance/
Main Street
An embedded reminder
board points out the reopening
of the park
69
The “Sun Wheel” and the
Looping Coaster “California
Screaming”
The Wild Mouse “Goofy’s
Flying School” and “The Golden
Zephyr” (right)
as it sounds. Moving around is rather tricky, lean
too far and the edges of the tyre hit the ground
bringing passengers to a halt, don't lean enough
and guests barely move in the direction they
want to. One also can't move all that quickly, so
no chance of getting good bumps like on a set
of dodgems. Maybe after a few goes and after
mastering the controls it'll provide a better ride.
When it initially opened, there were a large number
of giant inflatable Italian flag coloured beach
balls flying around the track for riders to throw
around. However they were removed after a couple
of months of operation as they reduced capacity
as people played with them while boarding,
and there were a number of complaints from
guests being hit too hard by them. Work is also
being done to reduce the weight of the cars by
removing ride controls that are no longer used in
a bid to speed up the ride experience. The cars
were originally designed to be controlled by joysticks
rather than by riders shifting their weight,
but this was changed during early trials.
The second ride in “Cars Land” is another small
and unique attraction. “Mater's Junkyard Jamboree”
from Zamperla sees 22 tractors and trailers
travelling around a figure eight track where
the trailers that passengers sit in, swing free like
on a Whip-the-Whip. The crisscross action of the
tractors having constant near misses combined
with the sideways action from being whipped
out, makes this ride brilliant fun. However due to
a small number of reported injuries, the seating
upholstery has been improved.
Radiator Springs Racers
At the very end of "Route 66" is the undisputed
star attraction of “Cars Land”, “Radiator Springs
Racers”. It uses a ride system similar to that
found on “Test Track” at “Epcot” (Florida) and
“Journey to the Centre of the Earth” at Tokyo
Disney Sea (Japan).
70
PORTRAIT
The redesigned Wave-
Swinger is now called
“Silly Symphony Swings”
The ride begins by boarding cars that look like
they've just driven out of the movies. The
vehicles then take their passengers on a leisurely
drive through “Ornament Valley”, with enough
time to admire the views, before driving into the
dark portion of the attraction. The first encounter
with one of the large animatronics characters results
in riders having to swerve to avoid a collision
with the truck, "Red".
The town's sheriff quickly appears, but rather
than reprimanding drivers for speeding he
invites them to take part in the upcoming big
race. While tractor tripping with Hook, Frank the
combine harvester is disturbed and chases
guests off through the ride to meet up with Lightning
McQueen who then instructs either Luigi to
fit the car with new tyres, or Ramone to give passenger
cars a re-spray. It's at this point that cars
are seamlessly separated off onto the two
different tracks ready to race side by side. So
after exiting either "Luigi's Casa Della Tires" or
Ramone's" House of Body Art", riders find themselves
lining up at the start line ready for Luigi's
shout to begin the race. What follows is high
speed acceleration into a series of curves, hills
and tight twists, which even offer airtime, before
crossing the finishing line at the ride's top speed
of 40mph. It's then back inside where Lightning
and Hook congratulate the winners. It genuinely
is down to chance as to whether one has a tyre
change, or a re-spray or whether one wins or
loses.
It's speculated that the new attraction most
probably cost around 200 million dollars. But if
the first few months of operation and incredible
guests survey results are anything to go by, then
it's unquestionably money well spent. “Cars
Land” is set to completely transform the
fortunes of Disney California Adventure, leading
to the multi-day resort that was planned
originally.
Typical and
notable for the USA:
most theme parks are
also opened until the
late hours, so it's
obvious that the
illumination has to be
perfect – the situation
also in the new “Cars
Land” theme area at
Disney's California
Adventure Park
The almost historic
coaster “Matterhorn Bobsleds”
from the year 1959 with new
cars and new rock work
Changes at Disneyland Also
In a bid to bring some attention back to Disneyland,
the oldest coaster at Disneyland Resort
California has also been given a major renovation.
Opening in 1959, “The Matterhorn
Bobsleds” from Arrow is not only renowned as
being the first tubular steel roller coaster in the
world, but also the first to use electronic monitoring
to allow more than one car to be on the track
at once.
The 45 metre tall mountain was closed to the
public in January ahead of the six month refurbishment.
The mountain itself had its first major
restoration since opening. Unlike previous revamps
where the snow was simply repainted,
this time it was completely replaced. New
lighting and a sound system have also been fitted,
with particular attention paid to the yeti
sequence.
But the most notable change, since reopening
on June 15 th , is the new trains. The replacements
now feature individual seats and
seatbelts. Earlier, guests just sat
inside the trains on long benches,
with kids often sitting between
adult's legs and sharing a
seatbelt. This change has received
much criticism as capacity
has been reduced from 8 to 6 riders.
But Disney is quick to point out
that this is how the original trains
were configured. There's also
criticism that the new seats are
also uncomfortable and quite
painful for riders of certain
dimensions, and do nothing to
improve the ride's well known
bumpy track. It's a good job that
“Cars Land” next door is proving
so popular, as it's helping hide
some of the negativity of the
sparkly new look “Matterhorn
Bobsleds”.
Netherland's theme
park Efteling belongs
among Europe's top parks
The European theme park year
2012 was not only characterised
by many new attractions, but
also by a pool of quite a number
of anniversaries.
Efteling offers something
special for all age groups
60 Years Efteling
For many this park has nearly developed into a national
cultural asset: the fairytale theme park De
Efteling. And it's no wonder really – the park, and in
particular its lovingly designed figures and animations,
have been enchanting visitors both adult
and child since its founding 60 years ago. And it's
particularly these days, in times of many and constant
crises, that people are longing for stability,
tradition and good feelings, which evidently the old
and well known fairytales such as Snow White or
Sleeping Beauty can convey.
The official founding of Efteling took place in 1952
with the new opening of a fairytale forest that was
designed by Dutch artist Anton Pieck, including the
classic fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, the
Frog Prince, and Mother Hulda, for which he was
responsible in his lifetime until 1974. The sensational
attraction of those days "Der fliegende Fakir",
which caused a furore due to its technical features,
also dates from Pieck. After his withdrawal after 22
years service, his right hand man Ton van de Ven
became the new Creative Director.
Nevertheless the wishes and demands of the visitors
had changed in the meantime. An increasingly
youthful public decided on the measures of all
things and demanded new attractions with more
thrills. Luckily those responsible recognised this fact
in time, and opened thrill rides such as the four-loop
"Python" (1981), the Darkride "Fata Morgana" (1986)
at that time an absolute novelty in the Netherlands,
and other examples such as the large Swing Boat
"Halve Maen" (1982) as well as the first Rapid River
in the whole of Europe – "Pirana" (1983). And one
cannot of course forget "Pegasus", the first wooden
coaster in the Netherlands (1991).
Increasing visitor numbers reflected the positive
image of the park with its well known price-performance
ratio: beautifully designed attractions with
lovingly laid out landscapes at an acceptable price.
Management always remained open to new developments
that fitted to the park concept, and invested
in the resort business at the right time with
"Hotel Efteling" (2002), and later the holiday house
settlement "Bosrijk". And no matter which attractions
were installed, they all had quality and or uniqueness:
"De Vliegender Hollander" (KumbaK Coaster),
the wooden coaster "Joris en de Draak" (Intamin)
74
and also the steel attraction "Bobban" (Intamin).
Very popular with the visitors are the Darkrides
"Vogel Rok" (Vekoma), "Fata Morgana" (Intamin),
"Carnaval Festival“ (Mack Rides), and naturally
"Droomvlucht“ (Vekoma).
Most probably it's this successful mix of fairytales
and legend motives on the one hand, and
the adventure rides on the other, that has made
Efteling so successful for 60 years, and has
brought about constant visitor numbers over
the past 15 years. For a number of years the
numbers have increased remarkably, and the
park has developed to be the largest in the
Netherlands with over 4.1 million visitors, and
to be the fourth largest park in the whole of
Europe.
And something really amazing is that even
these days, in a time of computer-video-online
games, an impact is still made by a magical
park that constantly surprises its guests with
meticulously equipped, themed novelties. The
60 th anniversary was celebrated by a very special
water-fire-music-light show by the name of
"Aquanura". Efteling remains true to its fairytale
theme, as this attraction is all about the "Frog
Prince". At an investment amount of 17 million
Euro, Aquanura (from WET Design, which also
programmed the famous Bellagio-water spectacular
in Vegas), it is the largest fountain spectacle
in Europe. The Darkride “Hartenhof”
(costs of over 42 Million €) that was actually
planned for 2012, will however only be completed
in 2015. A likeable little improvement is
the new theme restaurant that opened on the
30 th March 2012 is the "Polles Küche", which
serves the basic Dutch food stuff – the pancake
– in 21 different variations. And finally, a new
fairytale is to be completed this year – "De Niewuwe
Kleren van de Keizer" (The Emperor's
New Clothes").
And so everything points to a positive future. The
very likeable Efteling will continue to play a large role
in Europe.
Efteling's overnight stay
offers are unusual
HISTORY
One of the most
unusual theme park
Fort Fun's “Wild Eagle”
from Rodelsberger
40 Years Fort Fun
The fun and adventure Fort managed to celebrate its
40 th birthday after all – following a very varied history.
The aristocratic land owner Karl Freiherr von Wendt
had built a tow lift on a ski slope in 1972 and then extended
the skiing facility with a 780 m long toboggan
run – something which would also be very popular
these days, even if considered to have a somewhat
modest thrill factor. In 1976 a very small Western City
was opened – with 38 buildings all erected and
themed in the style of a US-Calvary fort with a saloon
and a bordering Indian settlement. This new attraction
enticed a huge number of visitors for a region not
particularly rich in entertainment. At the end of the
1970s however, public interest waned, and the founder
who was experiencing difficult times, sold his western
fort to two entrepreneurs from the region, Heinrich
Koidl and Helmut Schreiber, from the FAB firm.
The new owners took a big step in 1981 with the opening
of the Corkscrew-coaster "Wirbelwind" (since
2010 called "Speed Snake"; from Vekoma). In a more
or less regular interval, further rides were erected –
1986 a large Tivoli coaster (Zierer), 1992 a 44 metre
high Ferris Wheel (Nauta Bussink), 1994 the onetrack
"Silent Move", 1995 the rafting attraction "Rio
Grande" (FAB and Bear Rides), and 1995 the "Devils
Mine Train" (Vekoma), from the bankruptcy assets of
a Finnish park. In the meantime business was good,
and then somewhere along the line not so good anymore.
Even the faithful Sauerland folk, who are actually
known for their unobtrusive loyalty to old values,
realised in the long run that there were larger parks
in nearby Bottrop or Kaatsheuvel with simply more to
offer and with more adventure factor, and so the
visitor numbers reduced constantly.
The third life of the western park began with its sale
on the 18 th April 2002 to the aspiring group Grevin &
Cie. The group has had 100% ownership of the stateowned
Compagnie des Alpes (CdA) since 2002,
which yields well with its skiing facilities. But even for
the French, the hope to earn reasonably well in the
76
HISTORY
economic miracle country Germany, didn't eventuate.
Up until 2005, CdA only made small investment
amounts, apart from the year 2005 when among other
attractions, a Skyglider "Wild Eagle" (from Rodelsberger)
was impressively positioned between two
mountains, and opened for an amount of 7.5 million
Euro. Since approximately 2010 however, there have
been plans in existence at headquarters in
Boulogne-Billancourt for a new reorientation known
under the name of “Grands Parcs / Grandes Marques":
only large, well known, and prestigious European
parks with a high-value assessed economic
prospects would continue to be operated – such as
Parc Astérix, Walibi und Futuroscope. All smaller
parks were to be sold, and in December 2010 the
Wild West Park in Sauerland as well (last had only
near 280,000 visitors, 5.7 million € turnover, and
560,000 € profit). However it appears that everyone
was in such a hurry that the credit-worthiness of the
would be purchaser One World Group wasn't particularly
intensively investigated – with the result
that the deal for 5.7 million € broke down
only a few months later, and legal action for
collective and grievous fraud was instigated
against those responsible, Christine Ziegler
and her son Matthäus.
Since that time a search has been underway
for new potential buyers, and required investment
has been postponed. Nevertheless,
the anniversary was celebrated this
year with a Wild-West-Festival. Visitors will
have to wait for new attractions though, as
the Fort-Fun strategy only allows for new investment
every third year. The last novelty
was the show "Tala Takenya". This year
there were only small improvements made
for 900,000 Euro, among others the revitalisation
of the Ghost Ride and a gold
prospecting installation.
25 Years Futuroscope
It entices with the slogan "The somewhat different
travel destination... an enjoyment for the whole
family" – and that's exactly what it is. Parc Futuroscope
in western France opened on the 31 st May
1987, and occupies itself with the lovely new world
of multimedia (technology), the environment, and
nature (content).
The whole thing goes back to the initiative of politician
René Monory, President of the General
Council of department Vienne. Futuroscope is a
rare example of a functioning and successful
theme park project, which was initiated and
financed by the state – a fact that should be emphasized
when considering the times of the Nürburgring
and Spacepark-washouts. However the
actual park is only part of a large infrastructural
project with a huge technology park with over 220
media firms, research facilities, conference
centres and hotels.
Futuroscope these days contains 25 attractions.
And even if the park doesn't have a coaster, it does
offer highly interesting things that are well received
by visitors, particularly the huge cinemas:
IMAX, dome styled, with floor screens, with hundreds
of monitors, with 3D-walls or with liquid screen
equipped theatre – and always with unusual
film stories. There are excellent shows, the 45 metre
high "Gyratour" viewing tower, and a handful of
kiddie rides. But the landscape design as well as
building architecture (the responsibility of one
architect, Denis Laming) are also highly praised.
The most popular attraction according to visitor
survey is the 4D-IMAX-Film "Arthur 4D" (from star
director Luc Bresson). Other attractions in visitor's
favour are “Dances with Robots”, “Journey into the
Dark” (simulated perception of the blind), and the
3D-Film about the region, “Dynamic Vienne”. With
almost 1.8 million visitors, Futuroscope is the
number two in France, following Disney. The supply
on offer is so extensive that 45% of visitors stay
overnight, and 62% are repeat visitors. Many
guests travel by train to the park's own station.
New in the past 2012 season were the "iMagic"-
magic show and the 4D-HD-animation film "Le petit
prince", which is based on the well known children's
book and enriched with new sensory experiences
(produced by nWave Pictures Studio).
And as usual there are always many new films and
attractions around the theme sustainable development,
for example "The 8 Continent", which is
an eco-Darkride: here visitors don't shoot
monsters with their laser pistols, but eradicate
rubbish from the ocean. Finally there was also a
tread ride for children "Les machines du Leonard".
The public company Parc du Futuroscope has
been controlled by Compagnie des Alpes predominantly
since 2011 since purchasing 45% of
shares from department Vienne for 30 million,
which still holds 38%. The future chances for
Futuroscope are currently seen as very positive,
which also contributes to the planned establishment
of a Centerparc in the area in 2015 that will
boost short term destination tourism.
20 Years Disneyland Resort Paris
20 years of highs and lows. High, but unfortunately
with disappointing expectations, and spectacular
but expensive attractions. So this anniversary is real
cause for celebration in that the park has actually
survived, as there were at least three situations that
brought continued existence to the edge of the
blade. In 1994 and 2005, the financial situation was
so strained and virtually so intolerable that the closing
of the park was much more than a theoretical option,
but an increase in capital solved the problem
temporarily. 2004 was also dangerous due to the fact
that the American cable-TV-giant Comcast had
planned a hostile takeover of the Disney Company,
which, had it been successful at that stage, would
have meant the end of the Parisian park, due to overburdening
debts.
The enormous mountain of liability of currently 1.8
billion € is also the reason that there were no new
technical attractions for the 20 th anniversary, but only
quite small events: a new show parade "Disney Magic
on Parade!" on Main Street, the daily processions
now called "Disney's Party Train" were renewed, longer
opening times, birthday decoration and a little
backstage look-around in "Rendez-vous with Micky",
as well as a new multimedia evening show "Disney
Dreams" with Peter Pan as the centre point. However,
there are persistent rumours about upcoming
novelties: for months now there have been speculations
about new things such as the apparently 100
million € priced Darkride "Ratatouille" super coaster.
And so the picture of Disneyland Paris is actually
very ambivalent with impressive records mentioned
often in the media: 15.6 million visitors apparently in
the fiscal year 2011 in both parks together – more
guests than to the Louvre (8.4 million) and the Eiffel
Tower (6.6 million) together!
The actual problem however is the enormous
amount of debt that has piled up that the company
has to deal with. Realistic projections that after all are
announced by the principal of the parent company
Euro Disney S.C.A. Mr Philippe Gas, all boil down to
the fact that in the event that a tolerably good run of
The Main Street USA and
the fairytale castle are emblems
of every Disneyland Park,
also the case in Paris
Mickey and Minnie in front
of the “Tower of Terror” –
according to the European Star
Award 2012 – the best
attraction on the continent
79
A Halfpipe-Coaster from
Intamin is as of recent a feature
New characters have also
moved in
business continues, the resort will be in
the black by the year 2024 – in other
words 32 years after the opening!
There are naturally good reasons for
the huge deficit when considering the
guideline issued by the Disney head of
those days, Michael Eisner, which was
"Quality, quality, and quality once
again, regardless of what it costs".
Every visitor who walks through at least Disneyland,
can detect an enormous amount of attention to detail
and a rarely achieved fantasy. The theming demonstrates
clearly that artists were at work, and unique
ideas and ride constructions can only be found
here.
Some examples are the (much underrated) "Alice's
Curious Labyrinth" or the Walkthrough constructions
"Les Mystères du Nautilus" and "Legends of the Wild
West", or even "Discoveryland", a future version of
the visions of Jules Verne und H.G. Wells – completely
different to "Tomorrowland" in the USA, and the
Wild West themed Darkride "Phantom Manor". Or further
along also, the famous emblem of Parc Disneyland,
the "Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant",
which with a total height of 50 metres is more impressive
than any other Disney castle. Additionally,
the 27 metre long audio-animatronics wicked
dragon from the film can only be found here in the
cellar of the castle.
In undertaken German "product tests" Disneyland
Paris often reached and reaches only second place.
The number of attractions is added together, the
waiting times are taken into consideration, and put
into relationship to the declared height. This procedure
however reflects typical German thinking:
one wants to "have" something within reach for
money spent. Non measurable things such as atmosphere,
staging, theming, Imagineering, quality
and safety – all this, for which Disney parks have long
been famous, is not taken into account, which is a
great shame.
But one thing is true however: numerically
considered, the offer on park attractions in the opening
year was more or less lean. Strictly speaking
there were actually only 12 rides in 1992 (Phantom
Manor, Big Thunder Mountain, Pirates of The Caribbean,
Les Voyages de Pinocchio, Le Carrousel de
Lancelot, Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo, Mad Hatter’s
Tea Cups, It’s a Small World, Orbitron, Autopia, and
Star Tours). And it was obvious that European Disneyland
1992 was designed for families and small
children.
This orientation changed slowly with the installation
of thrill rides such as "Indiana Jones and the Temple
of Peril" (1993), "Space Mountain – from the Earth to
the Moon" (1995), the interactive family-Darkride
“Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast” (2006), “Cars Race Rally”,
“Crush’s Coaster” (2007) and “The Twilight Zone
Tower of Terror” (2008). These days the park is visibly
more interesting for other target groups as well.
And what will the future bring?
Quite possibly there will be a new development very
soon, if all goes according to the persistent rumours
that the American Disney Co, which thanks to its successful
films could do good business last year, wants
to completely take over the park. Currently 38% belongs
to Disney Co, the Saudi Arabian businessman
and Prince Al Waleed Bin Talaal 10 %, whilst the rest
of the parent company Euro Disney S.C.A. is noted
on the Parisian stock exchange.
If this were to be realized, then the expected third
park could come quite quickly, the completion of
which at this time is uncertain or envisioned for 2030.
If this is to be the so-called Eco-Village ("Les Villages
Nature de Val d'Europe"), which was announced
already in 2010 and should have been finished in
2015, is however questionable.
HISTORY
10 Years Legoland Deutschland
Since the opening of the German Legoland in May
2002 under a lot of media interest, the park has undergone
interesting developments, although the
traditional division has been retained. Firstly the "Miniland",
built up using 250 million or more Lego bricks,
is technically and aesthetically impressive with miniature
worlds on a scale of 1:20, and secondly the
various theme areas with ride and fun attractions.
However, since the sale of the Legolands to the USinvestment
firm Blackstone in 2005, which has
integrated its group Merlin Entertainment, quite a
number of things have happened. The number of attractions
has been substantially increased, and there
is a definite orientation towards fun and action. For example
in 2007 the new 5,000 m 2 sized theme area called
"Land der Piraten", and in 2009 a walk-through underwater
world called "Legoland Atlantis by SeaLife".
Currently 27 attractions are on offer, among them three
coasters, four water attractions, seven kiddie rides
and a number of round trips. These are rounded off
by the standard 3D/4D-cinema, which here is called
"Lego Studios" and the programmable Robocoaster
"Bionicle Power Bulider" from Kuka, which was introduced
in 2004.
Legoland Deutschland has become one of the "big
ones" in the German theme park spectrum. Reason
enough to celebrate its 10 th anniversary – for example
with a big party, Lego-building actions and 10% off all
Lego products. The central and world novelty was the
opening of the "Flying Ninjago" from Gerstlauer, which
circles guests at 50 km/h at a 22 metre height, and
allows 360° inversions.
And naturally there are also events en mass in the anniversary
year. Very popular are the "Langen Nächte"
with extra long opening times until 10 p.m., a huge fireworks
display, and of course a lot of music. Two summer
evenings offered the "musical people meet
magic" – a musical show spectacular with infectious
rock and pop music combined
with magic. Concerts with superstars,
kiddie-party-bands, and newcomer
boy groups, show that the
kiddie friendly park is advancing
more and more into the event area.
This also signalises a lot of satisfaction
on the part of the park owners,
who want to invest a further 80
million Euro in Günzburg over the
next 10 years, as visitor numbers
(2.1 million in 2011 and with that
being approx. number 25 in Europe)
are definitely increasable due
to the trend of family outings to
theme parks. For Merlin boss Nick
Varney, Legoland visitors in Germany
and everywhere else, are an
important medium for the ambitious
strategy to become the
world's largest provider of familyrecreational
attractions. A new
theme area, three new large ride
attractions, a motel or a four-starhotel,
possibly also a castle with
five-star-luxury-rooms may well
come into being.
COASTER
Lively drops,
rare elements and figures,
and self-rotating gondolas
are characteristic of this
construction
“Spinning” has become the
trend on family coasters over the
last 15 years. Each park that is
even halfway inclined towards
the family public should have a
coaster on offer with a spin of
some sort. So it was only a question
of time that the expansion
happy Toverland located in the
Dutch town of Sevenum near the
border city of Venlo, would also
offer such an attraction. And in
doing so, the park has done an
excellent job.
One can't get past the feeling that Toverland misused tennis halls that have been springing up in
wants to forget its beginning as a kiddie-play Germany and the Benelux countries like mushrooms
hall with a neat outside area as soon as possible: the over the past ten years, and which call themselves –
a real theme park. And it's not only since the time of paradises.
the elaborate extension to the outside area with the As it is, Toverland visitors now have the feeling that
catapult-start coaster "Booster Bike" (Vekoma, built theming here is considered important. The somewhat
functional first hall has undergone an intensive
called the "Mirakel-Route" that leads to the second
meln, 2010) as well as the extension to the two halls hall "Magic Forest" now connects up smoothly.
82
COASTER
A somewhat makeshift path leads from the
"Magic Forest" to the new coaster, between building
site fences. The waiting line area has been
very attractively and entertainingly arranged, and
also offers a good view of the ride. The station has
been designed in the style of a witch's cottage,
which appears to have grown completely out of
the surrounding nature. Due to its design quality,
it wouldn't be out of place even at Efteling, and
the station ceiling with its many plants and LED
lighting elements reminds one a little of the first
waiting area of Efteling's "Droomvlucht". The
sound here, as well as the onboard-sound that
can be heard during the ride was produced by
the east-Westphalia music tinkerers at Imascore
– all in absolute Hollywood quality! Different to the
case of "Troy" with a constant somewhat enervating
pop song irritating prospective
ride guests, the sound exposure
for "d’wervelwind" is an
atmospheric treat for the senses.
In this case, the parallels to
the works of Efteling's in-house
composer can't be overheard.
But in reality there's nothing
wrong with allowing inspiration
from talented people.
But let's get to the ride itself:
after a 180° right curve it's all
about a speedy arrival to the 20
metre high lift. Once at the
peak, each of the four individual
cars are released and set into
rotation by the following rightleft
combination. A slightly to the right angled first
drop follows, which leads the car group right
down near to the ground, connecting up with a
strongly left angled curve. And now the ride's
highlight with the following Horseshoe element:
depending on the rotational position of the car,
passengers either have a view to the sky or to the
ground below. As next, another strongly excessive
steep curve to the right that brings the
train into the first trick-track element after a near
to the ground left curve. This "noose" section
brings the cars into rotation.
An ascending left curve with an immediate
directional change to the right, and a right turn
near to the ground follow. Now the train is brought
into a new rotation by the trick-track element
again, sending the group of cars into the final
It's not only this tricktrack-element
that sets the
gondolas into rotation
brakes with a strongly angled left curve. After another
left turn, and the station is finally reached.
Whilst the train is brought to the loading platform
by way of friction drive wheels, a built in motor with
a worm drive arranges the cars in such a manner
that new ride guests can board the vehicles – resulting
in an increased capacity without stopping.
The decision in favour of Mack as supplier was
explained by Planning and Development Manager
Peter Cornelis, and due to the fact that the
ride offers a comparable high capacity, and with
16 passengers per train, large families can undertake
the journey together. "We travelled to Le Pal
in France where we rode the "Le Twist", which is
structurally identical, and were immediately enthusiastic.
And the fact that the attraction can be
travelled through without block brakes was
another aspect. And the "d’wervelwind"
completely makes do without a siding, which has
been placed under the station platform. As a result
the second train is not only kept constantly
dry, but the workshop is also located there. In the
event that the trains have to be exchanged or a
second train has to go on the course, the track is
simply hydraulically elevated, and the train from
the maintenance "cellar" is lifted to the station
area. Additionally, the attraction is very quiet, not
resulting from the usual tricks of sand or PU foam
in the tracks, or the supports having to be averted.
The attraction has simply very little or no vibration
and rides completely impact free."
The ride's popularity with the public also reflects
the high quality of the attraction. Complete families
enter the construction, and repeat rides are a
general rule, which seems to be caused by the
fact that no one ride experience is the same due
to the rotational effects. The
somewhat unequal vehicle
loading of the one colour cars
can be quite intense; for a
family attraction the "d’wervelwind"
is surprisingly intensive.
But this intensiveness is still
tolerable and doesn't appear to
have any adverse affects on
children at all (from 1.2 metres).
Summary: Toverland did everything
correctly as far as the
"d’wervelwind" is concerned –
and is now – if not earlier – finally
to be seen on the theme park
maps. And when the new area,
"Das magische Tal", is finished
with its water construction and
a large climbing attraction, the
earlier, somewhat larger kiddie
play-hall near the German
border will definitely be
considered a large park! ■
Veil of Dark
construction is German manufacturer
Gerstlauer, which now has its third installation
in Japan. The fact that Sega decided on
the coaster constructor from Münsterhausen
is nothing to wonder about, as the
Within the frames of a renovation of the virtual Spinning Coaster "Spin Gear" has already been in
reality theme park Sega Joypolis in the operation at the Joypolis sister-park Sega Republic
shopping centre Tokyo Decks, the operating firm decided
on an exchange of the main attraction. The old During the general overhaul of the park, originally
in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), since 2009.
coaster from a Japanese manufacturer not really opened in 1996, thoughts were made in the direction
of the core competence of the arcade game
known in the industry, which had already been given
new names and new cars a number of times but still manufacturer Sega, and so the less real ride constructions
underwent a "digitalisation". The skate-
couldn't be convincing regarding ride comfort, was
at long last pensioned off, and quite rightly. A new board simulator as well as the "Tokyo Halfpipe" was
ride attraction and a panorama restaurant now stand equipped with interactive elements: in the case of
in its place. The attraction is called "Veil of Dark" and the skateboard ride the performance of the ride
has been installed on the first and second levels of guests is rated on a screen showing the points
the three storey indoor park. The manufacturer of the achieved; the ride itself has not been changed.
86
"Veil of Dark" on the other hand offers a never-before
arcade game experience on coaster tracks. The
complete first half of the ride, which also contains
a five metre high chain lift, is presented as an interactive
Darkride with virtual targets on four different
screens moving to and fro in front of the four-seat
cars, or disappearing into the ceiling before the ride
continues. The targets are aimed at by way of a
tappet switch integrated into the shoulder restraints,
and downed by a second knob. Due to the
simple mechanism, the aim is only possible to the
left or the right; however there are enough potential
targets.
The idea of combining a coaster and an interactive
Darkride is not new. Already in 1988 the Japanese
firm Togo, together with Namco, had built the
"Shooting Coaster Zola" together, for Fujikyu Highland.
The closed construction also had a coaster
section following the Darkride segment, however in
the matter of technology, ride comfort and theming,
the construction at Tokyo's Joypolis is better by far
than the older attraction, and even the ride figures
write coaster history: following the shooting section,
the rotating cars are accelerated per friction drive
system into a Heartline Roll, absolving in the process
the first inversion on a Spinning Coaster worldwide!
Although "Veil of Dark" is quite
short with its 300 metre length,
the shooting scene nevertheless
increases the ride experience
appropriately. Thanks to
the decoration elements and
effects, the ride construction is
more of a theme ride rather
than a dark coaster.
And this ride fits in nowhere
better than in an arcade game
park in the progressive Tokyo
metropolis, however it remains
questionable if a comparable
hybrid ride will ever be seen in
a traditional theme park. Inversions
on a coaster with
rotating gondolas may well be
experienced somewhere else
very soon.
Thomas Karl, Utrecht, Niederlande
Russia – a country that isn’t exactly enticing due to
its theme parks. According to the branch organiser
RAAPA, there are 900 to 1000 parks offering
amusement in Russia. The numbers are really large,
but around 600 of them are only the so-called FECs
(Family Entertainment Centres), offering mostly fun
playgrounds (indoor and outdoor), and in some cases
are equipped with modern technology (gaming, simulators).
There are approximately 300 theme parks in
Russia, 120 of which are in private hands. These parks
however are smaller by far than a park such as Disney,
Europa-Park or Efteling (Netherlands). These parks
however are generally located in congested areas
and have less than 10 ride constructions at the most.
One exemplary park example in Russia is Gorky Park,
(1.2 km 2 and more of a recreational park) located near
Moscow; but there are rumours that this park will
shrink in the future. Many banks and the government
underestimate both the market and the potential, and
very often this form of entertainment is considered as
“western”. The fact is that the population is ready and
waiting! This is underlined by the number of foreign
trips made by the population that has an increased income
and is ready to spend it. Politics have changed,
and the widening of the Internet is also a sign of revival.
Whilst the market in Europe is satiated,
enquiries from Eastern Europe are increasing. Why
however under these circumstances are there no
large suppliers for Russia and Eastern Europe?
The prerequisites are actually ideal. Russia is a growing
market that according to forecast has an
economical growth of 3.8% in 2012. The majority of
the populace is another advantage. Alone in the Moscow
region there are 10 million residents whose preferred
travel destination is theme parks in Europe and
America.
Russia in itself has gone through extraordinary
development and change – from a communistic
country to its democracy in 2012. Nevertheless the
development is far from coming to an end politically
as there are still cries for liberty. On the other hand one
can definitely see that the potential for foreign investment
has been acknowledged. Targeted
are the large cities of Moscow and St.
Petersburg. The country itself has a deficiency
in ideas and experience and is
therefore dependant on the foreign
market. Copies of other parks or the sale
of “second-hand” ride constructions are
frowned upon. The populace has seen
much (Internet, travelling) and would not
appreciate such things.
Leisure time behaviour is also different
in Russia, which hinders theme park development.
Many Russians in the cities have for example a summer
house in a country area, and use their free time
for recuperation with the family. Some families have
less money available, and some only have one monthly
income of a few hundred Euro. Nevertheless the determining
factor is the gap between the rich and poor
that will continue to increase in the country. A large
part of the population will however have more income
available.
The differences in climate are also a hindrance as very
cold temperatures can be measured in Russia.
Political restrictions as well as dealings with corruption
– which these days is no longer as widely spread
– are a danger. The biggest problems are the inexperience
of Russian operators, and the uncertainty
if parks can make enough profit. A Disney park was
planned for the area of Kaliningrad a few years ago,
but obviously these were later withdrawn. The
reasons are unknown, but it could well have something
to do with anti-American attitudes. Whether or
not a Disney park will come into being in the future remains
to be seen. Nonetheless a number of projects
have been in planning since the beginning of 2011, in
particular Fun-City Parks around Moscow. The entry
of foreign companies on the Russian market is still
being made difficult as it’s only possible to purchase
property in association with a locally based company
and project developer.
These situations show that development in Russia is
difficult. The market has changed and is now maturing;
the size of the market and increasing enquiries
are particularly decisive. One must warm to the culture
of the market. Cultural differences, such as personal
contact with business partners and networks
are essential. Project development in Russia cannot
be compared with western characterized culture; one
very often has to adjust to changes and postponed
appointments. And not to be forgotten: the market expects
something new and creative. The country is often
gauged as chauvinistic – the typical concept of
fairytales, elves and magic – which are common at
many parks, are not a success factor for Russia.
Themes such as the history of the country, the inclus-
88
ion of theatre and music or the erection of extensive
recuperative parks (shopping, fun, ride constructions,
business, events, right up to overnight stay possibilities)
are recommended. One example is the planned
construction of Magic Russia (600 ha, Moschanko Investment
Group), a project of the most varied types of
recreation outside Moscow. The Russian market will
play an important role in the future, and it remains to
be seen if the mentioned obstacles can be overcome.
East European Outlook
But what’s the situation in other countries? Comparable
to Russia, but naturally there are also leader
countries. Hans van Driem (Consultancy International
Destination Strategies, Netherlands) knows the market
and emphasises the speedy development of a
number of east-bloc countries such as Poland. Poland
didn’t have even one theme park until a few years ago.
But the country continued to develop, and the economy
is booming. Shopping centres are springing up
everywhere in Poland, and wellness centres are “en
masse”. Only there are no theme parks. Investment
parties became alert: the theme park Adventure World
Warsaw is to be erected near Warsaw (240 ha, opening
planned for end of 2014/
beginning 2015). This is only the
beginning as there are plans for
theme parks to be erected in congested
areas. The question is however:
will these concepts be successful?
The polish populace has
more money and leisure time available,
but time will tell if the population
is ready for this type of entertainment,
which was only known
for years through television and
travelling.
Other countries in Eastern Europe
are going through a similar development. Countries
such as Hungary and the Czech Republic that demonstrate
a stable economy are also going through a
revival in the area of development of theme parks. A
number of lands/markets are still unstable and investors
are cautious, but see a big future in some east bloc
countries. The economic development of some
countries is still slow-moving and projects will come
into being step by step. Poland is an exception as the
country is developing faster than its neighbours, and
also has a very young population.
ADVENTURE WORLD WARSAW – THE LAST ACT?
Text & Photo: Frank Lanfer
Currently it appears that the loudly announced park
project by the name of Adventure World Warsaw
(AWW) is all going haywire. Although the park
planner JoraVision from the Netherlands was present
with a huge stand at the EAS in Berlin, displaying
a large model of AWW that was much admired,
perhaps it would have been better right from
the start not to suppose that it would be a new experience
resort immediately, and comparable to
the likes of Disneyland, Efteling und Europa-Park.
Without a doubt a modern theme park for Poland is
more than urgently required, however a couple of
numbers smaller – in other words a normal and attractive
theme park – would have been very promising,
believable, and also a lot more lucrative.
At the moment it appears that there are already problems.
According to regional reports, one of the
property owners has apparently been arrested. The
result: the still available area is a lot smaller than
planned originally. And so the park has already
shrivelled down by 2/3, the hotel has been reduced
to half the size, the construction of the water park
delayed, and quite a number of the planned 24 ride
constructions have been axed. Additionally many
of the already permanently employed, even at
management level, have been summarily
dismissed.
Some of the construction firms involved are also investors,
and promise, or rather promised themselves
a large slice of the Polish theme park cake.
However according to unconfirmed rumours,
there is no more money coming from
large investors who apparently were to
make around 700 million Euro available for
the AWW in Poland and Abu Dhabi.
Allegedly Park President and initiator Peter
Jan Mulder was to initially occupy his
first residence in the United Arab Emirates
before "the Saudis" were to make this sum
available – evidently illicit earnings. This
situation appears to have been too much
even for Mulder, resulting in his withdrawal
at the last minute.
Now there's no money and no investor, a
far too small ground area, and no construction
permit. And despite contrary
press announcements, it all appears to be
as it was four years ago: the beginning.
However, one really hopes that this project
– even if it will not be a "Disneyland Poland"
anymore – could be realized in some sort
of attractive form. One hopes so for the
population of Poland.
■
The model in Berlin still
shows the 450 million Euro
version, but even for the
apparent available amount of
100 million Euro, a decent
theme park can still be set up
FAMILY PARK NEUSIEDLERSEE
The family park Neusiedlersee
had purchased a ride, type
Flying Fish, from Zierer for the
2012 season, which has been
erected in the theme area
“Abenturinsel”.
Park Manager Mario Müller
The extension area for the new attraction is approximately
4,500 square metres. Based on the
style of the surrounding buildings, the Mediterranean
construction art has been continued.
The ride has been bedded into a setting that
depicts a harbour landscape. A gastronomy building
has also been erected in the new area, as well
as springing water. The investment amount for the
complete project is approximately three million
Euro. The new family ride construction by the name
of "Flliegende Fische" is basically a water attraction
in which children from three years of age can
already partake. The rotating centre piece of the
ride has 12 swivelling arms that are in a radial position.
The individual hydraulic cylinders of the arms
can bring about a height difference of six metres
during the up and down movement sequences,
which are controlled by the riding guests by
means of a joystick.
The lifting speed is 1.2 metres per second, flight
diameter is 17.3 metres. The 12 GFK-gondolas can
accommodate up to 24 passengers. Three water
cannons placed at 120 degrees angle spray water
at the gondolas randomly. The water cannons have
been designed as a dolphin, shark, and whale, and
the spray height of each cannon is at a different
level. It's up to the ability of the riding guest to
avoid the small fountains of water during the ride
with the aid of the joysticks. This principle of
course provides a successful source of entertainment,
and as the summer months have shown, the
new attraction has been enthusiastically accepted
by the visitors.
The park's new planned project for 2013 will be a
coaster by the name of "Rattenmühle". This construction
will be built onto a slope as a terraincoaster,
and will be equipped with a number of new
innovations.
PARQUE NACIONAL DEL CAFÉ
Photos: Hafema
Already in January 2012, a new rafting attraction
from Hafema was opened in the Colombian city
of Quindío near Montenegro.
The complete length of the water ride is 430m, it has
a drop of 4.5 metres, and the 9-passenger round
boats bring about a capacity of some 900 persons
per hour. The Parque Nacional del Café is separated
into two areas that are connected by a cable car:
one section is a type of museum village, depicting
the history of coffee growing, and the second is a
small amusement area with a number of ride
attractions. Operator is the National Federation of
Coffee Growers of Colombia, and the annual visitor
number is around 400,000.
The Bavarian Skyline Park began the
2012 season once again with a novelty:
the major ride “Sky Jet” that is not
recommended for those with weak
nerves. The gondolas, in a star form
order on the main mast rotate slowly at
360° initially at a thirty metre height,
before speedily plummeting towards
the ground.
The attraction is a used construction from
manufacturer Zierer, which earlier had
caused a furore at Blackpool Pleasurebeach,
the first owner, under the name of
"Bling".
The unique attraction for the German
theme park scene is located on an extension
area of Skyline Park directly next to last
year's novelty "Sky Rafting", the earlier
transportable construction "Wild ’n Wet"
from showman family Löwenthal.
But younger guests could also discover
something new in 2012: "Ready to board"
is the motto for the kiddie ride "Flug der
Camelot’s “Knightmare”
Some seaside amusement parks reported
having days with more staff than guests in
their parks.
After a number of years on a knife edge, Camelot
theme park has now officially closed for good.
The park, which was home to the Schwarzkopf
coaster "Knightmare" and the unusual diesel engine
powered coaster "Dragon Flyer", opened 29
years ago. It’s possible that the owners of the
grounds are taking advantage of a bad season
to progress with plans to turn the park into a new
housing development. It’s thought that Lightwater
Valley is interested in buying "Knightmare"
from the park.
The bad season is also being partially blamed
for the delay in the construction of Drayton
Manor’s next coaster, which had been planned
for 2013. The only major new rides announced
for the new season are the "SW7" coaster at
Alton Towers and the "Wallace and Gromit" Darkride
at Pleasure Beach Blackpool.
If one believes one industry insider, Alton Towers
has been affected the most this year with poor
attendance. The combination of bad weather
and the high price of petrol has meant the rural
park has been more badly hit than parks which
are located near big towns and cities.
Even Paultons Park, which opened "Peppa Pig
World" in 2012, leading to a doubling of attendance,
hasn’t been immune to the bad season,
also seeing a drop in attendance, yet at the same
time saw a continued increase in short-stay
bookings.
The much improved weather of late summer
helped give a last minute boost for some parks.
Marshall Hill of Funland Hayling Island said it
was going to be a disastrous year but thanks to
the last minute sunshine it’s just going to be a
bad year.
Despite the doom and gloom of a difficult year,
developers have announced their desire to open
a new £2 billion Paramount theme park in the UK.
