FUTURE WORLD
Michael Kollmann’s
“Future World” as a huge stage
Michael Kollmann with
artist Anika Zietlow – shortly
before her performance at the
Wendler concert at the Arena
A side view of
the scenery in Oberhausen
At his concert in the Oberhausen Arena on 29 th
September, pop star Michael Wendler surprised
the audience with an extraordinary
stage decoration; namely Michael Kollmann’s
“Future World” multi-storey Walkthrough construction,
which formed the centre of the large
stage.
What was the reason for this strange appearance
of the Funhouse? "Last year, somewhat surprisingly,
Michael Wendler's
management contacted
me and asked if my
"Future World” would be
available for the concert
in Oberhausen,” said
Michael Kollmann. They
wanted "some spectacular
scenery for a spectacular
show” and said
they had hit lucky in finding
Kollmann’s futuristic
funhouse while searching
the internet. Together
with the technicians
from the Wendler crew,
Kollmann then inspected
the conditions in the
Oberhausen Arena,
checked the technology
available at the hall and
possibilities for lighting
technology – and the
deal was struck. Having looked at his diary earlier,
Michael Kollmann had discovered that the concert
date, Saturday 29 th September (directly after
the "Future World” appearance at the largest wine
festival in the world, the Wurstmarkt in Bad
Dürkheim) could be met. The Kollmann transports
arrived at the Oberhausen Arena precisely at 10
a.m. one day before the concert – and the ride was
built up and technically inspected as early as 4
p.m. This was followed by a light test and the actors
dress rehearsal prior to the concert, as the
artists from the supporting band as well as
Michael Wendler himself entered the stage by
stepping out of the "Future World” – accompanied
by ingenious lighting effects, flashes and stage
fog, accompanied by corresponding sound effects.
It was a fantastic concert on Saturday;
10,000 fans had come to arena and were enthralled
by the show. Due to the numerous encores
by Wendler, Kollmann and his team were not able
to start dismantling the ride at 11 p.m. – as
planned – until about an hour later. Time was limited
though, as according to the contract the
Wendler management had to hand back the
Arena, well-swept out, at 6 a.m. on Sunday. As dismantling
proceeded quickly and precisely, the
"Future World” transports finally left the hall at 5
a.m. Later on, the concert management praised
the Munich showman, Michael Kollmann, for the
highly satisfying cooperation, and held out the
prospect of another contract.
At his next big concert, Michael Wendler may well
enter the stage stepping out of Kollmann’s second
funhouse; the completely differently themed
"Alpenrausch” – Who knows...?
Germany’s first Streetfighter with looping effects
has already arrived in Germany – “The Beast” from
Alwin Zinnecker from Neumarkt St. Veit no less.
On 25 th November 2012, the brand new ride was dismantled
by the owner at the premises of the manufacturer,
Technical Park in Melara/Italy, and transported
to Germany.
Zinnecker was already highly satisfied with the workmanship
of the paintwork, decoration and the lighting
system equipped with the latest
RGB-LEDs. Now there are
no more obstacles in the way
of the première of the first ride
in which passengers can decide
for themselves whether
they want to swing or somersault.
"The Beast" will celebrate
its première at the Palmkirmes
in Recklinghausen, and will be
officially inaugurated at the
Gern Dult in Bavaria after. ■
Helmut Bresler
During the last Michaelis Kirchweih, a 20 square metre
1:87 scale Kärwa diorama, built by the 35-year-old
Thorsten Rodriguez Fernandez in his free time, enticed
the public to the Fürth City Museum.
Particularly fascinating are the jam-packed thoroughfares
with a vast array of figures. Apart from the well-known model
construction sets from the toy industry, his own reproductions
– for example the Fürth cult ride "Space Party” –
can be admired while in operation. The fairground consists
of 13 modules, and another one is currently being
prepared. At model exhibitions, Thorsten Rodriguez Fernandez
has repeatedly been presented with the audience
award, or the first prize for his works. All in all, more than
100 attractions are built up on his miniature fairground. ■
DIE KRAKE
Now officially under the
ownership of the Markmann
firm: “Die Krake”
Hubert Markmann
The question as to whether or not the Bonn Markmann
firm had taken over the Schwarzkopf Monster
3 “Die Krake” from the Bremen Uhse firm was a
constant topic for debate on the German fairground
scene throughout the 2012 season. During the
Bonn Christmas Market, the Kirmes & Park Revue
interviewed Hubert Markmann.
Mr. Markmann, since last spring there is no end
to rumours that you have purchased “Die Krake”
from the Uhse family. Is this so?
Yes, we have. The ride was finally taken over after
the fair in Grevenbroich.
and we quickly agreed on the purchase price and the
date of takeover. The sale and all the formalities could
not have gone through more smoothly.
Were there any peculiarities during the
negotiations?
Actually, there were. The Uhse family would never
have considered putting the ride up for sale on the
open market. Actually, we were the only buyer worthy
of their consideration. Mutual trust and our experience
with the structurally identical "Octopussy” tipped the
scales.
Your traction units and several family members
could already be seen at your newly purchased
ride during the season.
How did you come into contact with the Uhse
family?
That’s right. We have familiarised ourselves with
this ride and carried out a couple of changes.
We have been friends for 25 years and kept in permanent
touch throughout the years. As we toured with
structurally identical rides, there was a continuous exchange
of experiences; indeed, mutual help was the
order of the day.
When did you come to the concrete decision
to buy?
Will you part with one of your other rides due
to the new purchase?
No, we won’t. We will continue to tour with the "Octopussy”,
"Nessy”, "Hexentanz”, and the "Super Marci
World” and "Aqua-Labyrinth” Funhouse constructions
will also be presented at the fairgrounds under
our management.
Firstly, there was the unfortunate incident at the
Bremen Freimarkt, when we immediately helped the
Uhse family out in any way we could. The construction
was transported to our hall, where it was completely
dismantled and serviced. Specialist firms working for
us built and installed new gondola arms, and as a result,
the "Krake” made its first rounds again at the Trier
Europafest. First negotiations took place last spring,
Isn’t this quite a huge task?
Certainly, but my family and the family of my brother,
Hans-Peter, are a well-coordinated team with a fixed
allocation of responsibilities. Moreover, our children
are grown-up and already working independently. We
all lend a hand – no "ifs” or "buts”. With perfectly organised
logistics we will manage.
City of Tilburg presents the
winners with their certificates
In 2012, a number of participating showmen
have once again been awarded the coveted
fair prize at the Tilburg Fair in Holland.
The winners were, the "Hoepla XXL”
(Lutjens/Knoop) from the game sector, the "Inversion
XXL” (Albert Ordelman) as large attraction,
and the "Zum süßen Bayern – Chocolade
Fontain” (Schmidt/Schäfer) from the sales sector.
Winner in the kiddie ride sector was the "Donkey
Kong” from Klaas Verwijk, and the "Kop van
Jut” from Laan from the nostalgic rides. The audience
award went to the double looping coaster
"Teststrecke” from the Steiger firm. The prizes
were presented by Jet van Baast (Fairground Director)
and Joost Müller (Organiser). All the winners
can participate with their awarded attractions
at the Tilburg Fair 2013 without having to
apply and under the same terms as in 2012. ■
Many new features on
Küchenmeister’s “Konga”
During the 2012 season,
astute observers discovered
a lot of new details at
Sebastian Küchenmeister’s
huge "Konga” swing,
enhancing and emphasising
the ride’s elaborate
theme.
A new feature is, among
others, the water effect at the front, with the
huge Konga gorilla spewing out a spout of
vapour – enriched with different jungle
scents – providing a refreshing cooling
down during the warm season. There are
also new bamboo-style rest benches. Ever
since the middle of last season, the trendy
neon-yellow colour of the safety restraints,
covered with special SKM varnish, match
the colour of the front design. According to
the owner, more than 30 new decoration elements
round off the "Konga” theme. Sebastian
Küchenmeister, who is also very
happy about some 2,600 "likes” on his
Facebook presence, says that many new
ideas are also to be realized in 2013. ■
The “Hoppings” event in
Founded in 1882, The
fair in Europe. Its nine-day
run comes to a close on the
last Saturday of June, yet
despite the summer dates,
the weather can still spoil
proceedings. By general
consensus the 2012 event
was the worst in living
Impressions
of “Hoppings” 2012
fair, and as such, no public parking was available
on site. Although public transport links to
the Town Moor are good, this nevertheless resulted
in thousands of lost parking spaces and
another deterrent to potential visitors. All this
combined with the three lost days of business
meant that many participants lost money.
But the people in the North East of England are
made of tough stuff and visitors turned out in
better numbers than expected, given the circumstances.
Wellington boots were the essential
footwear, in all manner of colours.
So large is the Town Moor that the fair occupies
less than 5% (approximately 16-hectares) of a
total of around 1,000 acres (400 hectares). The
amusements are laid out very simply in straight
lines, about a mile long (1.6 km), running parallel
with the Great North Road. Two central aisles
of large rides and flanked by a further two aisles
of round stalls, food kiosks and, increasingly,
children's rides. The outer rows are made up of
further games stalls, arcades and "shows” such
SPECIAL
Sometimes heavy
machinery was used for
building up the attractions.
The fairground was marred
as Fun Houses and Ghost Trains. Towards the
city end of the ground, the fair also attracts
various Romany clairvoyants.
A new initiative for 2012 was a music stage
showcasing local bands, though both this and
the "continental” style bar presented by showman
Stanley Reeves, were hidden away from the
main walkways. Given the fair's history as a temperance
festival, serving beer in the daytime
could be problematic (alcoholic drinks were for
sale after hours to showmen only), but surely an
event of this size requires more areas for
families to sit down and relax.
It's a shame the weather was so harsh this year,
as the Hoppings boasted a particularly good
line-up of attractions. Three main roller coasters
were on offer, including two Reverchon Spinning
Mouse rides (Mellors and Danter) and what is
SPECIAL
Many KMG constructions
were presented; here the “The
“Equinox” Tango
“Cyclone”, “Waltzer XL”
and a gastronomic operation
now the UK's largest travelling
attraction, the Mellors Group’s
Mine Train. The ride was built in
1987 by Big Country Montineering
(Interlink) for the American
Adventure theme park
in Derbyshire, and the locally
based Mellors family picked it
up at auction after the park's
closure five years ago. Much
work has since been done to
make the construction
portable. Another park ride
putting in an appearance was
Michael Sheeran's Fabbri Air
Diver, which previously operated
on Brighton Pier and is now
set for a new home at Ocean
Beach, 20km from Newcastle
in South Shields. Although
most attractions stayed until
the end, special permission
The season’s novelty
in Newcastle
was given to M&D Taylor's Wild River (Log
Flume) to leave early for the T in the Park music
festival in Scotland; everyone in Newcastle was
wet enough thank you! Other interesting new attractions
included Stanley Reeves Jnr's "Atmos
Fear” (Technical Park Loop Fighter) and Billy
Crow's "Cyclone”. Whilst Twist rides have been
a staple of the British fairground scene for many
years, this new construction from Monty Hammond/ARM
is the first to be built with a lifting element.
A further 70 or so large attractions included
such offerings as "Air” (Star Shape), "Top
Star” (Super Star), Tagada (x3),
Waltzer (x5), Miami (x4), Gallopers
(x3), Dodgems (x4),
Sizzler/Twister (x3), Matterhorn
"Sky Flyer” (Fabbri Star Flyer),
"Top Buzz” (Top Scan), "Extreme”
(Orbiter), "Super Bob”,
"Vertigo” (Booster), Saltomontes/Jump
& Smile (x3),
"Reflex” (KMG Experience),
"Equinox” (KMG Tango),
"Superbowl”, "Speed Buzz”
(KMG Fun Factory), "Rock
Rage” (KMG Inversion), "Power
Surge”, "Shake Off”, Giant
Wheel, "Round-Up”, "Dragon
Coaster” (x2), "Toboggan”
(Chance coaster), "Big Apple”
coaster, "Sea Storm” (Happy
Sailor), Frisbee, Rotor(x3), Reverse
Bungee, Rodeo (x2),
Ghost Train (x5), Fun House (x8), Jolly Tubes,
Mirror Maze, Ice Maze and "Believe It Or Not”
(freak show). As they try and forget the disaster
that was the Hoppings 2012, many showmen
around the UK will now be praying for better in
2013. The Town Moor has great potential when
the weather is good, but given the increasingly
unpredictable ”Great British Summer,” further
steps will be required to protect the site (and the
showmen's business) in the years to come –
something which the Freeman of Newcastle
have claimed they will now address. ■
The Ferris Wheel
at the Lunapark in Manavgat
Manavgat is a district city in the
province of Antalya, located on
the Turkish Riviera, with almost
90,000 residents. The
well-known and popular sea
and holiday resort, destination
for thousands of visitors every
year, most of them traditionally
coming from Germany, is
located only 7 kilometres to the
north east. During the summer
holiday season, a minor Lunapark
accommodating a number
of ride attractions entices
the public for several months
in the city centre of Manavgat.
Text & Photos:
Lunapark Manavgat (TR)
The fact that the Turkish showman industry still
falls far behind European standards can hardly
be ignored. Although there are numerous small and
medium-sized Lunaparks, and even the occasional
larger example in the holiday regions, regrettably
high standards cannot be expected. Thus it is not
unusual that ride, game, and sales attractions for example,
are equipped with only a minimum of electronics
and lighting, or that either or both do not work
at all. As if that were not bad enough, decoration
elements and artwork – if available at all – are often
faded. And there are those constructions that inspire
anything other than a positive impression.
Visitors to the Lunapark in Manavgat were able to
try out a number of ride attractions during the last
season, such as the "Viking” Swing Boat, which was
During the summer months,
the Lunapark in Manavgat is
open until after midnight
built up in the rear section of the fairground and
made quite a modern impact. With a construction
called "Dance Show”, visitors were presented a
round ride similar to a "Hully Gully”. The attraction
was powered by a generator, which was built up
directly adjacent to the paybox and made a fairly
dismal impression with both its annoyingly loud
drone and pungent smell of diesel. On the "Vortex”,
Not all the rides made a
A number of game
a double Ranger with suspended gondolas built up
in the centre of the fairground, passengers were offered
over-the-top rides. This looping attraction was
very popular with visitors. In addition, a plain container
was presented as a "7 D” cinema, with various
movies. Due to its compact size of just 10 m 2 ,
the inside auditorium seemed to be quite claustrophobic,
and an old table roofed over by a sun shade
served as a paybox. Highly popular with visiting
families was the "Elma Kurdu” coaster, which made
its rounds next to a Ferris Wheel. In the rear section
of the park there was a dodgem track, as well as the
"Aqua Boots”, which were keenly enjoyed by the
younger visitors. Further kiddie rides available were:
the classic kiddie carousel, a bungee-trampoline, a
compressed air ride, kiddie railway, the "Gondol”
swing, and a water ride. A number of booths were
also put up along the thoroughfares. Among the
games attractions there were, for example, a "Derby”
and a wheel of fortune, offering soft toys and
kitschy landscape paintings as prizes. A snack
booth in the front section of the event ladled out a
brown, indefinable heap from a huge pot onto paper
plates, which proved to be something that was
very much of an 'acquired taste'. Drinks could be
bought from slot machines put up in generous numbers.
The Lunapark was open daily from the evening
up until shortly before midnight.
In 2012, the desire to tour his
own ride has come true for
the showman Volker Grewe
from Worms, who has for
many years now enjoyed a
reputation in Southern Germany
with his nut specialities
stalls (among others “Nuss &
operations, he now also
there are plans for a new crown in the ride centre
new feature is the name "Heart Breaker”; former
names of this ride were, among others, "Super-
had passed the 12-year inspection without any
problems, Volker Grewe presented the attraction
for the first time at the Peter- und Paul Messe in
Trier in May. At its following appearances in Hermeskeil,
Breisach and Worms, the "Heart
Breaker” was very well received. 14 Hollywood
Star gondolas accommodate up to 3 passengers
each. The ride has ground measurements
of 21 x 19 metres, is 12 metres high, and requires
two transport vehicles (centre trailer and a
The “Engelspyramide” was
built by the Schmäding firm
in Großefehn/Eastern Friesland
for Edgar Arnoux from
Karlsruhe in 2011. With a
total height of about 23
metres (according to owner
information), the giant pyramid
was the main attraction
at the Pforzheim Christmas
Market 2011 and 2012, visible
from afar. The Kirmes & Park
build up of this attraction.
The "Engelspyramide” has six levels, being assembled
from containers. Due to this construction
design, transport of this giant pyramid requires
only three semitrailers, which were manoeuvred
alongside the site in the very heart of the pedestrian
precinct, for assembly in Pforzheim. The
octagonal ground floor that accommodates the beverage
outlet is assembled from three containers.
Initially, the centre container featuring the bar with
a number of taps is manoeuvred to its precise
and propped up. (2)
After these preparations, two containers can be
put up at the sides, balanced and propped up one
after the other. Once the three containers have
been bolted, the roofs are unfolded, and the floor
segments are mounted. (3 and 4)
Then the construction is built upwards. The heatable
"Engelsstübchen” is located above the
ground floor, can accommodate 30 guests and is
assembled from two containers. Once the two containers
have been manoeuvred into their precise
positions, they are bolted to each other and
screwed to the eight corners of the ground floor
The third level is also assembled from two containers
– as is the case of the first level – and
mounted above the "Engelsstübchen”. (7)
After the assembly of the third level, the angels are
mounted to the rotating disc. The upper levels are
pushed into each other and are initially set aside
next to the site. At first, the shaft with the wing wheel
and large star are mounted. This done, the three
levels can be pulled out and locked in position.
Next, the decoration elements and the angels are
installed on the rotating disc on the fourth level.
Following this, the three levels can be lifted onto
the pyramid and mounted. (8 and 9)
After the mounting of the remaining decoration elements
and the barriers of the four upper levels, the
staircases are covered with wooden panels. Once
the wiring has been carried out, the bar has been
filled and the lighting checked, the build-up of the
Volksfest in Stuttgart
At the end of the 167 th Cannstatt Volksfest (28 th
September to 14 th October 2012) there was some
positive news from the organiser in.Stuttgart.
Even during the first Wasen weekend, some one million
people had visited the Wasen-fairground. Moreover,
"3 rd October was the day with highest visitor attendance
ever since in.Stuttgart became responsible
for the organization of the event,” said General Manager,
Andreas Kroll. Marcus Christen from the organising
firm added: "This year we had a 30 percent increase
in buses and a 50 percent increase in camper
vans on 2011.” In the end, about four million visitors
were logged, yet cautious calculations had estimated
just 3.5 million. And naturally, the spokesperson for the
showmen was fully satisfied with the outcome of the
Volksfest. At the mere sight of the three towering Propeller
attractions ("Booster Maxxx”, "Flasher” and
"Gladiator”), many a visitor may well have wondered if
30

A LOOK BACK
Record-breaking numbers:
the fairground on 3 rd October
present its striking appearance in 2011 to its best advantage.
This year, the Walkthrough construction
"Crazy Jungle” from Wagner occupied the unpopular
site. Negatively noticeable at the weekends were the
dirty tables and benches being put up in the middle of
The rubbish tables in
“Thoroughfare B”
Behind the tree:
“Crazy Town” (Wagner)
they might be the first manifestations of the policies of
the new government, headed by Winfried
Kretschmann from the Green Party as Prime Minister,
that had somehow been deployed on the Wasen-fairground.
However, the propellers did not form part of
a wind farm for the generation of renewable energy,
but were solely meant to provide the visitors with fairground
fun. Apart from the other three similar rides, the
Wasen-fairground offered a harmonious mixture of fairground
attractions – even though several showman did
not know where they were allowed to build up their attractions
up until a couple of days before the opening
of the Volksfest. This resulted in some lively moving
around, planning and relocating right up until the final
layout was completed. This was partly due to the fact
that there quite a number of sites in Stuttgart that are
very unpopular with the showmen. For example, one
of these sites is the exit near the car park "with the tree
in front of it”, where the giant swing "Konga” could not
A LOOK BACK
New: the “Württemberg-Haus”
and the Vogeljakob
the thoroughfare in front of the Ferris Wheel, where high
piles of rubbish did not exactly invite visitors to sit and
eat. All too often families with prams could be seen who
would no doubt have liked to take a break there, but
walked on upon seeing the rubbish. Apparently, nobody
felt responsible for the refuse disposal in this location.
On a well-attended day, such as 3 rd October,
this might be excusable, but certainly not during more
typical opening days. Particularly annoying was also
the fact that no taxis were available at the end of each
opening day, and that the taxi company did not even
bother to answer the phone. As a result, the organizer
received many complaints to this effect, and in turn
complained themselves to the taxi firm. Thomas Kroll
said "I am very angry. We won’t tolerate this situation;
this requires action!”
The beer tent operators, including the newcomer, Marco
Grenz, who presented his "Württemberg Haus” for
the first time, provided a positive review of the Volksfest.
Most of the tables and benches inside the beer
tents are now hired out in two shifts per day. However,
according to a number of showmen there was a lack
of toilet facilities on the fairground during the peak
days. As a result, many a drink-happy visitor relieved
himself at the fairground attractions – not a particularly
nice sight, for children in particular. The event
closed with a brilliant display of more than 1,000 fireworks,
accompanied by music on 14 th October. ■
MEMMINGEN
Text & Photos:
The Memmingen Jahrmarkt, the
largest city-centre fair in Southern
Germany (13 th to 21 st October),
once again attracted about
150,000 visitors.
Ever since the year 1730, the market
has been held during the week
prior to the day of St. Gallus’s death
(16 th October). However, the roots
of the event date even further back
to 1541, when it was mentioned in
official documentation for the first
time. Since 1946, today’s 9-day
event has been held every single
year. There are a number of features
peculiar to the Memmingen
Jahrmarkt. One is the special
topography; the other is the fact
that there is no beer tent at the fairground
– even though the event
takes place in Bavaria! The lack of
a large beer tent has a highly positive
effect not only on the event’s
atmosphere, but also on the high
spirits of visitors (and participating
showmen) alike. As a result, the
Memmingen event does not suffer
Parade of showman
attractions at the Memmingen
Popular: “Top Spin” and
chain ride in Memmingen
Volksfest on two levels:
due to the special topography
in Memmingen
from the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption,
such as fights, vandalism or broken glass
on the fairground thoroughfares. How admirable! Interestingly,
in this very context, very few will know that
between 1955 and 1964 a Spring Volksfest event was
held in addition to the traditional fair event, at which a
beer tent was indeed erected. However, the City Council
decided to close down this spring festival "due to
the high noise level”. In Memmingen, visitor attendance
is barely any lower on weekdays, which
proves to be of great benefit to the showmen attractions
(about 210), the bric-a-brac market (now with an
additional 120 merchants) held from Tuesday to Thursday,
which attracts very many guests. This year’s fairground
accommodated "Free Style” (Agtsch), "Top
Spin” (Bausch), "Techno Power” (Eckl), "Alpenrausch”
(Kollmann), "Hex’n Wippn” (Zehle), Chain Ride (Mayr),
dodgem track (M. Staudenrausch), "Musik Express (R.
Staudenrausch), and "XXL-Krake” (R. & A. Staudenrausch).
Most of the kiddie rides at the Memmingen
Jahrmarkt appear "on the ground floor”; in other
words, on part of the Westertorplatz. With the construction
of the Karstadt department store at the
Königsgraben in 1975, a part of the Westertorplatz was
lowered and has been occupied by kiddie rides, including
a carousel and the Jet Ride ever since. ■
Impressions of the
Fellbach Herbst 2012
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
Every year on the second October weekend (this
year 12 th to 15 th October), celebrations take place in
Swabian Fellbach, the second largest city in the
Rems-Murr-circle near Stuttgart, the “Fellbach
Herbst”.
The event is considered as one of the most well known
and popular harvest-home-and wine festivals in southern
Germany, which is attended by around 200,000
visitors every year, who storm the district town located
on the northern city borders of Stuttgart. The area between
Schwabenlandhalle, Entenbrünnele and the
town hall are transform into a large festival mile on
these days.
There are wine tasting stalls everywhere from private
wineries and the wine cooperatives. The festival begins
traditionally with wine tasting on Thursday
evening, but it's not only the noble drop that stands as
the centre point. From Friday, the ride and Funhouse
attractions are available to the public, together with
Swabian delicacies. There are many small wine tents,
games and snack booths to enjoy located between the
showman constructions that are spread out all over the
area. The Saturday afternoon is traditionally dedicated
to the large festival procession that winds its way
through the city. But it's only after the last wagon has
reached its destination that the showmen are allowed
to open their rides. Many, mostly young visitors, wait
impatiently in front of the attractions until they go into
operation at 4 p.m. This time the following attractions
were available: Ferris Wheel (Boos), "Breakdance”
(Becker), Miami "Pirates Caribbean" (Traber), Twister
"Disco Flyer" (Böhm), Simulator (Becker) as well as a
dodgem track, Swing Boat, kiddie Ferris Wheel,
carousel, kiddie track ride and a Jet Ride. The supporting
programme offered the open Sunday for shopping,
as well as a colourful fireworks display in the
evening that was lit on the roof of the Schwabenlandhalle.
Although the weather wasn't showing its best aspects
on the evening of opening day, showmen were
nevertheless satisfied with results.
On 12 th October at 5 p.m., the Anröchte Autumn
Fair, celebrated until 15 th October, was officially
opened with the tapping of the keg by Mayor
Holtkötter on the community centre forecourt.
While adults enjoyed a glass of cold beer, younger
visitors rushed the rides and Funhouses, which
could be tried out free-of-charge for half an hour.
The autumn fair was celebrated throughout the
whole town centre and attracted visitors across an
extensive area, having been extensively advertised
throughout the surround region. In Anröchte,
the organizers and many tradesmen have recognised
the market and the promotional value the
fair has for the town. As a result they support advertising
with generous donations. This year, the Anröchte
authorities were able to contract some 100 showman
operations. Due to the careful choice of a balanced
mixture of ride and Funhouse attractions, the autumn
fair was a meeting point for all generations. Visitors
were able to enjoy a number of novelties, such as Deinert’s
"Big Spin” and the "Adrenalin” Free Fall Tower from
Bügler, which were well received by the public, and
from the Netherlands there was also the "Experience”
(v.d. Marel). Other attractions presented were the
Walkthrough construction "Aqua Velis” (L. Hofmann),
"Breakdance” (Schneider), "Piraten Rutsche” (Meyer),
"Shaker” (Tröger/Foulon), Musik Express "Star-Club”
(Schneider), Hornig’s Schwanenflieger nostalgic
chair-o-plane, as well as the dodgem tracks from
Burghard and Isken. On Friday and Saturday, the party
took place inside the community centre, and on Sunday,
the shops were open for business. Some 50 merchants
participated in the bric-a-brac and Topfmarkt
on Monday, and at the same time a kiddie flea market
was held. Additionally, the showmen offered two rides
for the price of one on Monday, and in the evening the
fair was closed with a brilliant fireworks display. ■
From the 20 th to 24 th of October, the 355 th edition
of the Fettmarkt was celebrated in the district
town in the north of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The new Fairground Director Tim Sawukaytis from
the city administration was able to secure two novelties
for the Warendorf event: "Airgate" (Welte) and
"Crazy Mouse" (Janßen). On the festival area of
Lohwall there was also the Ferris Wheel "Star of
Berlin" (Lorenz), "Musik-Shop" from Rasch,
Keuter's Barockflieger, the dodgems "Racing
Cars" (Tovar), the Walkthrough "House of Horror"
(Plaenert & Schieck), Miami "Super Gaudi"
(Schneider-Sonntag) and Janßen's "Remmi Demmi".
For the smaller visitors there were four kiddie
rides and a pony ride available. Fairy floss, roasted
almonds, bratwurst and grilled mushrooms
were provided by the marketers, and concession
stalls of all types rounded off the amusement supply
for the visitors. The Fettmarkt was officially
opened with the tapping of the keg by acting
Mayor Doris Kaiser on Saturday afternoon. Following
the opening, the obligatory Markt-walk was undertaken,
which as is usual saw the distribution of
free tickets by the mascots of the Fettmarkt – the
"Klingelmännchen". The highlight of the event in
changed into an open air shopping centre with the
bric-a-brac market, and the back area of the Lohwall
presented the livestock, farm machinery, vegetable
and junk market. Moreover, there was also
a riding competition. In addition to the many
posters that were already distributed throughout
the complete city area three weeks beforehand,
there were also large wall posters bringing attention
to the Fettmarkt. The local press and a regional
radio station reported in depth about the event
that closed on Wednesday evening.
FÜRTH
Zinnecker’s “The King”:
Novelty in the 2012 season
and in Fürth
Bavaria's largest street
Kirchweih is and remains a
sure-fire success. The
twelve day event in the
heart of the city causes a lot
of problems with closures
and detours – however the
Kärwa visitors love the flair,
and the successful mixture
of fair and market with
around 275 participants.
And the team of André Hollitzer
from the city Markt- und
Liegenschaftsamt were
42

successful in being able to
present still entirely unknown
attractions in the region as
spectacular novelties. Zinnecker's
"The King" fascinated
the public with its somersaulting
sequence and elaborate
LED lighting.
In addition to two dodgems
(Perz und Kunstmann) five
other large ride attractions
were present: Drliczek's Ferris
Wheel, Wolf's "Breakdance”,
Gugel's "Space Party”,
Ruppert's "Take Off” and
Distel's "Wellenflug”. In the
Funhouse sector the public
were able to choose between
Kutschenbauer's "Magic
House” and Drelischek's
labyrinth "Atlantis”. Food and
drink are very important at
Fürth – 73 operators offered delicious variety.
The trend that the Kärwa is attractive to all age
groups, and each can find what he or she
wants, continues – even within the widely
spread gastronomy offers. The "Kärwataler" (1
Euro value for 90 cents) remains a huge success
at Fürth, and is always quickly sold out.
Heinz Melchior celebrated his 50 th anniversary
presence at the event this year. Following
his operation of card games and a shooting
gallery he has been present at the event
with a confectionary booth for a long time. The
supporting programme also enticed the visitors
– the Kärwa-Gwerch, the Fränkischer
Heimatabend as well as open shopping Sunday.
The traditional harvest festival procession
that is known all over the region and presented
by a Bavarian television live for the 10 th
time, was shorter than usual this year with only
62 participants.
Next year is seen with mixed feelings by the
showmen: large building measures on the
The Bocholt Herbstkirmes (19 th to 22 nd October)
took place this time in pleasant temperatures of
around 20 degrees. Due to the almost summer
weather conditions, the city experienced an exceptional
state during the time of the event, as
the fair was well frequented from early in the day
until late at night.
"A dream fair with dream October weather" said the
city marketing boss Ludger Dieckhues. DSB-President
Albert Ritter was also full of praise: "The
streets and areas were well filled on all four days, a
fair is really celebrated here – something that
doesn't happen everywhere". The visitor storm and
turnover were perfect. It was observed however
that based on experience, visitors on the Berliner
Platz remained there longer than in the inner city. In
order to increase the length of stay period in this
area and on the Gasthausplatz, Fairground Director
Markus Kock installed particularly attractive ride
constructions such as the novelty "Voodoo Jumper",
the "XXL" as well as the "Circus Circus". On peak
days Bocholt already reached its capacity. Congestion
threatened areas in the rows could be reduced
by the removal of bar tables. Despite the
huge number of visitors the police, fire brigade and
emergency services were very satisfied with the
process of the large event. The German police officers
were once again strongly supported by their
colleagues from the Netherlands – after all many
visitors also attend from the neighbouring country
to celebrate with the locals. There were also positive
changes to the event: the parking areas had
long opening times and therefore equalized the
search for parking facilities in the inner city area,
and the bicycle watch area was also well frequented.
As a result there were thousands of bicycles
lined on up on the Nord- and Neustraße. Through
the implemented glass deposit requirement, there
was less broken glass and as good as no wounds
or tyre damage. Guests from near and far celebrated
their fair, and showmen were thrilled about
their very good turnover in Bocholt.
the "Foire d´Aout" also takes place on the
same location in August (this time from the
4th to 27th) in the Belgian city of Charleroi.
The areas "Place du Mange" and "Charleroi
attractions, and the entrances to these individual
locations were occupied by countless
concession stalls.
As the event takes place in the inner city, the
evening hours are most frequented. The first of
the festival areas offered a "Breakdance" with a
dodgem attraction located directly behind,
somewhat hidden. A number of kiddie rides and
concessions stalls were also in this section. Opposite
this area stood the forlorn labyrinth
The second festival area offered the roundabout
"Rolling Rock" with its neighbour being the
Walkthrough construction "Adventure Island",
enticing visitors with its course running over
largest area offered the two track rides "Crazy
INTERVIEW
HOLGER BALLASCH – MINIATUR WUNDERLAND HAMBURG
The MiWuLa, the common abbreviation
for the Miniaturwunderland,
or Wonderland in Miniature,
is the largest model railway
in the world, and Hamburg’s
major tourist attraction, and the
10,000,000th visitor is within
reach. At present, the new airport
feature, with aeroplanes taking
off and landing, is extremely
popular with the public.
The 'Italian scene' at the venue is currently
being continued and expanded, and in between
existing constructions, model sections are
being updated and modernised. This includes
the fairground theme. Holger Ballasch, who also
does guided tours behind the scenes of the Mi-
WuLa, is the "fairground director” in charge. In
an interview with the Kirmes & Park Revue, he
explains what the novelties will be, especially in
the fairground section.
Text & Photos:
Helmut Bresler
Mr. Ballasch, which novelties will there be in
the Speicherstadt?
Very many. We have rebuilt and expanded the entrance
area, and are working at full speed on the plans
for the Italian section, as well as having a theme plan
up until 2020. Most important however is the fact that
the public interest is steadily increasing.
Which themes are you responsible for?
“Kirmes Organiser” at Miniatur Wunderland
Hamburg: Holger Ballasch
Particularly appealing:
the illuminated fairground
For the shipyard and the maintenance of the
ships. In addition, I take care of the LED lighting, guide
interested groups behind the scenes of the models,
and act out my passion for model construction on the
fairground theme, which is now facing a thorough overhaul.
Indeed, the whole fairground is now being newly
designed.
What precisely will be done?
Firstly, new attractions will be added; and
secondly, we aim at presenting as few rides as
possible with a backflash. For example, visitors will be
able to enjoy the "Glückskönig” from the Schleinitz
family – which fell victim to a fire at the Düsseldorf
Rheinwiese in 2011 – in all its beauty.
Will the Bad Klosterberg fair retain its current
site?
Yes, but the overall appearance will change.
Which novelties will be added?
by the way, even featuring gondola lighting, which was
not included in the standard model. Moreover, the
Octopussy, the Flipper, and the Geistertempel will be
built up on the new fairground.
Are the models suitable for continuous
operation of ten hours daily, 365 days per year?
Holger Ballasch: This is an old, but nonetheless
ongoing issue. By now, we have come to know the
weak points very well – the key word being the drive –
make improvements already during the assembly of
the models and also making the necessary preparations
for an elaborate lighting system. It is just as well
that in this regard, I have had quite some experience
with LEDs, and can really put this to some use here.
One reason for the big success of the model
is the almost 200 push-button features, where the
visitors can deliberately trigger effects. Will these
buttons still be on show?
As is now well known, Faller launched many
splendid and attractive models within the last few
years. Some of them are still sitting in the workshop in
their original packaging, or fully assembled in a carton,
such as the Indiago ride – the design and ride pattern
of which has always particularly impressed me
while touring. It will now be presented at the MiWuLa,
The public would stone us if we abolished them!
I think push-button attractions have significantly contributed
to the success of the MiWuLa. Of course, they
will be retained, and new effects will be added. We
promise!
When will the rebuilding begin, and when will
48

the new fairground be opened?
Well, I would say "soon”. But all joking aside, I
hope that we will be able to symbolically tap the first
keg in the new beer tent at the beginning of the new
season, at the german Easter fairgrounds in late March
2013.
railway wagons and have to improvise everything else;
and as we attach much importance to a high level of
perfection and want to perfectly recreate an absolute
sense of reality, it is a challenging task. But we have
tackled this aspect. It will probably be a special train,
transporting a complete roller coaster from one fairground
to the next.
INTERVIEW
By the way, are the models promotional gifts
from the manufacturing companies?
No, they aren't. It is our company policy to purchase
every single piece, in order to ensure MiWuLa’s
independence. In the past, we have had the best
possible experience with this philosophy.
Nonetheless, you certainly have good
relations with the manufacturers, don’t you?
Of course! This is important and indispensable,
and these exist with regard to both the model manufacturers,
as well as to the companies operating the
large originals. And I love to go to the Hamburg Dom
every year.
In the same building in the Speicherstadt, the
Dungeon – presenting the dark sides of the city –
is also enticing the public. How do the two of them
get on?
Both attractions could not be more different – and
they get on perfectly. We are simply good neighbours,
liking each other. Sometimes, Dungeon-themed actors
clad in their costumes come to our bistro and mingle
with the visitors. That’s always a big surprise for our
guests. We really get on very well, and I think that there
are an increasing number of guests visiting both
attractions.
Since when has the MiWuLa existed, and since
when have you been a part of it?
At the moment, the classic special showman
train is still missing among the trains, isn’t it?
Yes, this is still a challenge. After all, it has to be
completely rebuilt. We have already purchased the
The première was celebrated in the summer of
2001, and I joined one year later. Since 2005, I have
workers, we are a team of almost 300 colleagues,
both female and male.
NOSTALGIA
Jean-Paul Favand
on his Velocipede carousel
(PB)
It is a mere 5-minute walk from the
Métro station “Cour St.-Émilion”
through the lovingly restored depots
of the former Paris wholesale
wine market, which has long
since developed into a magnet for
‘insider’ tourists, and onwards to
the big, wine-red gate of the
“Pavillons de Bercy” on the
“Avenue des Terroirs de France”.
“Visite sur rendez-vous” says the
plaque above the door bell: “Visits
only by arrangement!” Those
to whom the gate opens however,
may count themselves fortunate.
After all, they will not only be allowed
to admire one of the most
important collections of showman
objects in the world from
1850 to 1950, but they will also be
carried away into a world of
dreams from which there is no escape.
“Museum der Jahrmarktkünste”
– roughly translated:
“Museum of Showman Arts” –
sounds like a rather less than
modest title, but nonetheless well
describes the superb scenario
that Jean-Paul Favand has been
presenting to his more than
200,000 guests in Bercy every
year since 1996.
Musée des Arts Forains
In the 19 th century, the Bercy district in the 12 th
"Arrondissement”, located on the eastern outskirts
of Paris north of the Seine, was the centre
of the wine trade in France. Trains brought the
casks from all the French wine-growing areas to
Bercy. In their "Pavilions" – warehouses built of
brick – the wine growers offered their wines to
retailers and consumers. As the district enjoyed
exemption from taxes, a lot of selling and drinking
was done. In the Belle Époque (1880 to
1914), Bercy developed into a district renowned
for its artists and partying scene. Thus it was only
appropriate that in the mid 1990s, Jean-Paul Favand
purchased a some 17,000 square metre
the famous architect Gustave Eiffel
An audience with Favand is a privilege. Those
getting to know him better will experience an
eloquence that has become rare these days. Favand
is a visionary with the pecuniary ability to
realise his visions. Firstly, he is an impresario of
the old school, running his dream factory – in
which he also employs academic curators,
event managers, media specialists and restorers
– in a friendly but strict way. Secondly, he is
an exceptional artist, cleverly setting his own
Moreover, he is an experienced businessman:
Museum, theatre and salons are designed in
such a way that they can be used as locations
for events of an unusual kind, at which guests
are allowed to use many exhibits – rides, shooting
galleries and other games of skill. Movie
studios take advantage of this opportunity: In
2010, Woody Allen shot some scenes for his Oscar-winning
movie "Midnight in Paris” here. The
pavilions and the theatre surrounded by greenery
are booked for events and galas by affluent
companies almost every day. Even in his childhood,
Favand had been thrilled
by the culture of comedians,
artists, and showmen, as
well as by art and the antique
trade. When Favand opened
his antique shop "Tribulum” in
the centre of "Les Halles”, the
district of the former Paris
wholesale market near the
newly opened "Centre Pompidou”
temple of culture in the
1970s, he was already able to
offer a remarkable collection of
The collection also
At a time when objects like these were
hardly interesting from an artistic, historic or cultural
point of view, Favand had taken a business
risk. But Favand was sure that the time for objects
like these would come. He cleverly
redesigned his "Tribulum” into a bistro, in which
he presented not only a permanent exhibition of
his objects, but also changed exhibitions
dedicated to special topics of entertainment culture.
Located at a site well-frequented by tourists,
the "Tribulum”, being one of the first Paris
theme bistros, became a big success. From the
early 1980s, Favand enhanced his collection by
spectacular exhibition projects all over the
world, among others in Japan and Saudi Arabia.
In 1988, Favand found space for his growing
collection and studios required for restoration on
an industrial site in Gentilly, south of Paris. Up
until 1993, he built up his "Musée des Arts Forain”
on this location. After another move, Favand
eventually found an ideal location for the permanent
accommodation of his museum and its
further extension in the aforementioned theme
salons of the old wine depots at the Avenue des
Terroirs de France. Even the reception in the foyer
of the museum is overwhelming for visitors.
Standing on classic pedestals, three and a half
metre high wooden statues with flower circlets
held high, get the visitors attuned to the high artistic
quality of the hundreds of exhibits awaiting
them. The statues, half woman-half angel, come
from the ride factory from Alexander Carolus Devos
in Gent. At the turn of the 20 th century, the
trained church sculptor was considered to be
one of the best artists designing ride façades
and gondolas. Built around 1890, the statues
once decorated the triumphal front of the salon
carousel "Les Vagues de l’Océan” (The Waves
of the Ocean) toured throughout eastern
France by showman Eugène
Lapp. It was an early Caterpillar Ride
and one of some twelve salon carousels
touring throughout France around
the turn of the 20 th century. From the
foyer, visitors immerse into a veritable
ocean of the very best carousel woodcarvings
from the Belle Époque from
France, Belgium, and England – and
also from the corresponding Gründerzeit
in Germany. An entire zoo of carousel
animals from prominent European
workshops is exhibited here, such
as, in addition to an elephant, the wellknown
carousel cow built by Friedrich
Heyn in Neustadt-on-the-Orla at the end of the
19th century, and the classic centaur half man,
half horse, as well as depicting the Grand Vizier
Ali Pascha, who led Egypt on the way to the modern
car clearly
exemplifies – may well be
the last carousel of its kind
that has survived, worldwide.
The carousels, the
rather plain swing boat of
southern German origin,
and the rotating stages on
which the visitors are allowed
to take a seat in baroque
gondolas, are surrounded
by a selection of illustrious
performances and smaller
objects of entertainment:
Inside an old nougat booth,
there is a parade of smaller
carousel mounts next to a
simple Swing Boat from
southern Germany, cars from an old kiddie ride,
art nouveau portals from old touring rides, and
carousel paintings decorate the pavilion walls.
Be it the shooting salon, in which a hit triggered
the amusing and flippant game of mechanical
targets or shooting boxes, or throwing stalls
where visitors tried to hit the heads of hated contemporaries
with balls, or billiard tables "à la Japanoise"
– nothing is behind glass in this museum,
everything captivating the visitor, virtually
begging him or her to make use of it and to begin
the game. In the Venetian salons, Favand’s
guests are presented with brilliant performances.
Computer-controlled, the figures of the "Comedia
dell’Arte” step into the loggias of the salon
walls. Singing arias, they take turns with artist
figures presenting their tricks. Gondolas and
NOSTALGIA
The museum also
employs restorers (PB)
sea boats float along on the "Canale Grande” in
front of the painted settings of ancient Venice.
Yet this "Cyclorama”, as mechanically operated
panoramic paintings are called, is only one of
countless cycloramas in Favand’s collection.
They come from one of the best mechanical travelling
theatres: The "Grand Théâtre Mécanique
Morieux” had been founded by the Paris engineer
Morieux in 1809 and toured throughout
Belgium and France up until 1932. As "World-
Theatre”, it was mechanically animated, adorned
with lighting effects and even had scenes accompanied
by atmospheric sounds: Historic
pictures of famous towns, battles in international
conflicts, conquest of colonies, scientific expeditions
to distant lands and natural disasters.
In the Venetian salon, Favand now presents the
Venice cyclorama with modern means of animation.
The computer-controlled salon lighting
is lowered, and Venice with its
floating boats is immersed into a
gigantic, three-dimensional video
projection, eventually seizing the
whole salon – and the visitor, in the
midst of events. The Musée des
Arts Forains is no museum in the
strict sense, as it does without any
explanations of the exhibits’ cultural
and entertainment history.
There are no museum "basics”;
neither exhibit labels nor information
panels giving an overview, or
a printed museum guide. This is a
pity, considering the cultural value
of the exhibits. As a result, visitors
are left with no other option but to
book a guided tour. The Musée
des Arts Forains is not a place to
find out about showman social history
and living conditions in former times. Favand
wants visitors to understand his "museum”
without display cases, as a lively and interactive
meeting place with cleverly arranged representative
works of art from a past entertainment culture.
The visitor is to be right in the middle of the
action and to dream...
President Albert Ritter
European Showmen received by Pope Benedict
Original carousel horse for the Holy Father
Courage, persistence, responsibility, solidarity,
and generosity are the virtues of the
"large family", the circus people and showmen.
"The joy of the audience, the grace of
your performance, the rhythm of the music
produces a direct communication with both
old and young." And Benedict XVI remembered
also the challenges that
travelling artists are confronted with –
from schooling for the children right up to
the bureaucracy of the authorities. However
the guests should categorically hold
onto their art, and in the process trust in
their faith.

ESU-President Albert Ritter (right) in conversation with Pope Benedict.
Pope Benedict XVI received a delegation
of showmen and circus artists from Europe
and the USA on the 1st December 2012
in a private audience. The Holy Father
praised the "selflessness" of a profession
that is not dominated by economic deliberation.
The President of the European
Showman Union, Albert Ritter, handed
over a carousel horse with the original
crest of the Holy Father to Pope Benedict
in the name of all European showmen.
The invitation from the "Pontifical Council
for Pastoral Advice for Migrants and
People on the Move" and the occasion of
the "Year of Faith" had countless representatives
of national ESU-Associations
taking part in the pilgrimage to the eternal
city. The celebrations began on the 30 th
November 2012 with a mass in St Peter's
Basilica, conducted by Cardinal Antonio
Maria Vegliò, President of the Pontifical
Council for Pastoral Advice for Migrants
and People on the Move. In the evening the
participants met up on the Piazza del Popolo
for a festive get-together with events
and music.
A colourful parade with thousands of showmen
and circus members began the next
morning led by the traditional flags of the
European Showman Associations, from the
Castle of the Holy Angel to St. Peter's
Square. They were then received in the
audience hall by Pope Benedict XVI. The
Pope said that the Church was pleased
about the "commitment that you all show,
and values the loyalty to tradition, about
which you rightly can be proud. The
Church, which as you is also a pilgrim in
this world, invites you to take part in your
divine mission through your daily work."
President Ritter hands over the gift from the
European showmen to the Pope.
Within the course of the private audience,
ESU-President Albert Ritter had the opportunity
to discuss the problems of the
European showmen with Pope Benedict.
On the previous day a long working
discussion had already taken place with
Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò. "We want
that UNESCO acknowledges Volksfests as
a cultural asset, and build on the support
of the Immigrant Council," declared Ritter.
The council representative Cardinal Antonio
Maria Veglio had signalised his support.
EXHIBITION
The sculpture outside
the entrance to the
exhibition halls proves it:
after a downer comes a
boom
It was a good to interesting exhibition,
and, as almost every
year, an official new visitor record
was announced: 25,800, an
increase of 2.7%. However the
impression of having more visitors
this year wasn’t felt by all exhibitors.
Whilst many American
manufacturers in particular were
satisfied in Orlando, it appeared
that European firms felt that this
year’s EAS in Berlin ran a better
course. The substantial non-attendance
of west and eastern
European operators in general,
was noted.
IAAPA
Frank Lanfer
Frank Lanfer and all existing
companies and parks
The IAAPA unites around
4,500 companies from over
90 countries, among them
more than 1,000 theme parks
that are visited by around one
billion visitors annually,
producing a total turnover of
over 30 billion US-Dollars.
These numbers underline impressively
that the worldwide
theme park industry counts
among the most important
economic factors, and continues
to be a growth engine.■
IAAPA Expo 2012
However the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2012 remains
in positive recollection. In addition to
novelties and projects about which the Kirmes &
Park Revue reports in the following pages (not within
the frames of our IAAPA-Asia and EAS exhibition
reports – see KPR 9/2012 and 11/2012), there have
finally been steps taken by the world’s largest trade
exhibition for recreation technology against product
piracy – and drastically! This is thanks to a lawsuit
by Zamperla against two Chinese manufacturers.
For months Beijing Jiuhua and big-player Golden
Horse had been under observation, and even
intentions to purchase were feigned in order to be
able to produce video evidence fimed of a hidden
camera. And when brochures and photos of
amusement constructions of other manufacturers
were offered once again at Orlando, IAAPA took action:
Plainclothes FBI officers arrested those responsible
and penalized them officially for an
amount of 138 million US-Dollars!
This didn’t however appear to disturb other (Chinese)
exhibitors, and even after this action was taken
there were still one or the other true to original
copies discovered at the exhibition. Nevertheless
this action showed, following last year’s announcement
from IAAPA-President Chip Cleary, (who will
be retiring from his position at the end of 2012 to go
into private sector enterprise), that a battle ensues
against such deeds, and the cheap (and occasionally
dangerous) pirated copies.
And another positive trend: this year’s outside area
was nearly double the size of the year before!
Nevertheless this can be explained by the fact that
a large number of inflatable manufacturers were
banned outside. However the number of attractions
ready-to-start was satisfactory – among them the
so-called “Ziplines” (as well as five other producers
in the halls!), an attraction type which actually can
be found on every well equipped kiddie playground
in Europe.
Roland Mack hands over
the IAAPA sceptre to Will Morey
60

Skyline
One of the most interesting Zipline projects will be
opened in June 2013 in Las Vegas. Since already
for a year, a temporary quadruple 600 foot course
has been located under the huge screens of the
Fremont Street Experience, which provides a
terrific and much admired illumination in the
evenings. This popular attraction will apparently be
permanently installed next year with the starting
ramp being themed as a 37 metre high vending
machine. “SlotZilla” will then operate over four
courses: each of the four begin from a 30 metre
height and have a length of 500 metres. Additional
four 260 metres courses will make their start from a
21 metre height as well.
Adventa
Another attraction that can be counted as belonging
in the Zipline group is the “Human Coaster” concept
from Aventa. As is the case with other countless
suppliers of this type of amusement, one person
hangs on a cable with the aid of a spring clip.
However in this case there is no taut supporting
cable from tree to tree, or alternatively tower to
tower, but a triple harness carrier of steel. As a result
light drops can be built into the course.
Skyride Technology
A new supplier appearing in the amusement industry
is the inventor of rollerblades, Scott Olson.
The reason for his intention of entering this branch:
“I want to merge fitness into the amusement industry”.
Whilst the idea of a gondola being moved by
muscle power over the tracks, or rather in this case
under the tracks, is not particularly new, the sport
aspect has priority here. Different to the difficult to
move vehicles of many known attractions, the lightweight
construction and the direct power transmission
is worth mentioning, resulting in races also being
able to be undertaken on multiple courses.
Furthermore the individual vehicles can be set into
motion per bicycle, or a crank handle. Additionally
using a simple lever even singular junctions can
be driven thorugh. Scott Olson can readily imagine
the attraction being used in urban areas – no
wonder, as in the northern American cities there are
no bicycle paths as in Europe.
At long last! Severe crackdowns
Most probably the
loveliest exhibition stand was
erected by Theming and Animatronics
Industries (TAA) – and
from here the best view of what
was going on as well
FantaWild
And another exhibition trend showed up at Orlando:
more and more park groups are blending in with
the exhibitors! The Chinese FantaWild-group has
already been present at the IAAPA-Expo for a number
of years, as the company began as manufacturer
of 3D and 4D attractions before beginning to
erect a number of parks. In the meantime the group
has grown to seven Chinese parks, and very soon
there will be another in the United Arab Emirates
(we have already reported). The reason for the
group’s exhibition presence is seen as an opportunity
of selling its own products as well as an attempt
to find business partners and financial investment,
as due to the immense backlog demand and financial
success within Asia, there are plans for the
opening of a further five new parks annually.
OCT Group
China’s Overseas Chinese Town Group (OCT) has
other reasons for its appearance in Orlando, as it
has been present at IAAPA exhibitions for a number
of years in order to canvas investors. Only recently
its subsidiary OCT Vision Inc., has been also
offering its own ride construction developments to
other park operators, for example the idea of an indoor
Freefall Tower with a double storey round
gondola. The 20 to 30 metre high “Vision Drop Ride”
accommodating 30 passengers on each level is
surrounded by a huge screen. The passenger carrier
moves simultaneously with the film sequence,
and can naturally also offer real free falls.
Wanda Group
China’s largest real estate group was founded in
1988 and generates revenues of around 17 million
US-Dollars annually. The Chinese company that
was present at the IAAPA for the first time, owns
among others 40 so-called Wanda-Plazas (modern
shopping malls in inner city locations), 26 five-star
hotels, and 730 cinemas in China. By 2015 the large
real estate group has intentions of operating 120
Wanda Plazas. Two large experience destinations
are also being prepared, and will be realized together
with the Canadian design offices of Forrec.
The Sipsongpanna International Tourism Vacation
District will originate in the city of Jinghong in the
Yunnan-province. Apparently ten hotels, a nature
theatre, a city district with restaurants and a 63
hectare sized theme
park are to be erected
on a total ground area
of six square kilometres.
Another International
Tourism Vacation District
is in planning for
Dalian in the north.
Here, the largest Chinese
recreational resort
is to be developed on 9.5 square kilometres. In addition
to a gigantic show theatre, an artificial city
district containing shopping and entertainment
possibilities, housing, apartments and 14 hotels, a
183 hectare sized Film & Television Cultural Park
(including indoor park) is in planning. Further along
a 300,000 square metre sized and largest indoor
amusement park in the world is to be realized, and
is planned to contain a film park, a theme park, a
water park and a shopping mall.
Russia Park
Russia is also searching for potential investors, as
the Russia Park is to come about as a publicprivate-partnership.
However, according to Alexander
Tazetdinov, the huge undertaking is completely
secure thanks to the political support of Russia’s
President Vladimir Putin, who considers the Russia
Park project as being of national importance.
Whilst by all appearances the traditional and world
famous Gorki Park in the heart of Moscow is being
reduced and the amusement section might even be
completely closed, the political assurance guarantees
an amount of one billion US-Dollars for the
realization and operation of the new amusement
resort, to be located around 30 kilometres from the
gates of Moscow (and in the direct vicinity of the
international airport). Over 1,000 hectares will apparently
not only offer a theme park with approximately
50 attractions, but also a safari-park, a
botanical garden, and an all day-all evening
amusement mile with restaurants, hotels, conference
and exhibition centre. The most attentiondrawing
attraction will however be the Russia Miniland,
which will depict the twelve hundred year
Russian history of all its regions.
At the end of 2013 an open international architectural
tender will be offered, followed by an open international
tender for the right of project realization on
the basis of public-private partnership. The concept
and realization phase is planned for between
2015 and 2020, with the opening envisaged to be
2020. In the first 25 years, operation will be undertaken
by the private partners.
Village Roadshow Limited
Following the closing of the Wet ‘n’ Wild water park
in Las Vegas in 2004 in order to make way for a new
hotel complex, a new water park is to be erected
with the same name – nevertheless quite a number
of blocks from the original location. The Australian
company Village Roadshow Limited (VRL) will corealize
the 16 hectare sized park on the edge of the
gambling metropolis, which will without a doubt
produce a refreshing cool-down in the middle of the
bone-dry Nevada desert. The investment amount
for the erection of the new water park with the
famous name will apparently be 24.5 million Euro
(51% held by VRL), and will entice 650,000 visitors
annually. All 24 slides will be supplied by WhitewaterWest.
64

According to Robert Kirby, VRL generated earnings
of 154.7 million AU$ (123 million Euro) before tax
with its Australian parks in 2012, and VRL estimates
much more: “We see our theme parks as not only
our largest business; it is what we call the new
foundation business of VRL. Theme parks will be
the biggest growth engine in the coming decade
and beyond.”
Polin
For almost a decade there wasn’t a single outdoorwater
park near or far in the hot region in and around
Las Vegas – and now in the 2013 season there are
two new water parks opening. In addition to the new
Wet ‘n’ Wild, the Cowabunga Bay Las Vegas is on
the best way to becoming a reality. The business
family Huish, already operating two small water
parks in Utah and Washington, will erect the water
park on a nine hectare area located directly next to
the Galleria Mall in the suburb of Henderson,
together with Vegas Residential LLC. The opening
is planned already to be spring 2013, and so even
before Wet ‘n’ Wild.
And with that, the product portfolio of the Turkish
manufacturer Polin served well: among the 24 water
slides such as for example the
six-lane “Surfin’ U.S.A. Racing
Slide” with the course partly four
and half metres below grade,
passing under a pedestrian
bridge, and the “Surf Safari”
slide, which was also first introduced
at the IAAPA exhibition,
will be erected here.
This is a type of open funnel
water slide first ever in a parabolic
form. The attraction has
with its 22.5 metre length and 17
metre height huge measurements, and sliders
experience almost weightless moments in the four
passenger rafts. And a further characteristic: both
waiting and viewing park visitors can see into the
funnel from above or in front. The preceding
attraction is a pipe slide with an up to 40° drop – so
it’s pretty speedy. All Polin slides are naturally
produced and completed in brilliant and inventive
“Magic Shine”.
EXHIBITION
Polin, Art & Project,
and 3DBA developed an
indoor water park with
Ice Age theme together
The new tower project
from Mondial: the transportable
“Sky Raiser” and the permanently
installed “Sky Seeker”
3DBA
Roger Houben’s firm has a new addition: together
with the Italian designers Art & Project and the manufacturer
Polin, a new water park project has come
about. An interesting concept for an indoor park
was introduced in Orlando – the reason for the cooperation
with 3DBA – themed with the characters
from Ice Age and RIO. Already by the beginning of
2016, the18,000 square metre Thrills & Chills water
park will be opened in China. Additionally, shopping
mall visitors will be able to look directly into the
water park due to the large window fronts.
Mondial
Two extremely interesting viewing tower projects
were introduced for the first time at the IAAPA exhibition
by manufacturer Mondial from the Netherlands:
“Sky Raiser” is the name
of one, where a classic round
gondola accommodating 60
passengers climbs an 84 metre
high shaft. The required
ground area for this transportable
attraction is 26 by 23
metres. There is apparently already
a first customer – from
Germany. The second novelty
in the tower sector is called
“Sky Seeker” and is based on
the current and huge “Wind
Seeker”. Here however the
horizontal gondola cross that
rotates on the 93 metre tower
mast will be equipped with
Ferris Wheel gondolas.
abc rides
The Swiss manufacturer order books are bulging,
and it’s from the water and raft ride segment in
particularly that diverse constructions will be
delivered in 2013.
For example, a new water attraction will be going
to Oberhausen where Merlin Entertainments is
erecting the new type of Ocean Adventure Park at
the moment, and a “Raft Race” will be built for an
unnamed Dungeon (also Merlin). Norway’s Konge
Parks will receive a water attraction, and a
“Wildwater Rafting” ride will go to the East German
Freizeitpark Plohn, and will be erected on elongated
grounds measuring 45 by 120 metres. The
length of this construction is 360 metres, the
conveyor height 19 metres. Six eight-seat round
boats bring about a capacity of 720 passengers per
hour.
66

Mack Rides
With this year’s IAAPA-Expo the Chairman of the
Board period comes to an end for Roland Mack –
and with that without a doubt also the continued and
pleasant presence of the various Miss Germanys,
who for years have been selected at Europa-Park,
and idolised him at the openings and gala
evenings. However, details were revealed about a
new Europa-Park attraction for 2014, and the first
cutting of the spade having taken place only a few
days before the start of the exhibition. “Arthur – The
Ride”, themed on the French animations film “Arthur
et les Minimoys” with star director Luc Besson, will
have many combined coaster variations: a Powered
Coaster with hanging, freely swinging and rotating
gondolas, and according to the current plan,
also indoor and outdoor sequences. However wild
ride figures have been waived as the attraction,
which will contain a 4D-similar feature such as “Harry
Potter and the Forbidden Journey”, is planned to
permit passengers to ride from four years of age.
A Wild Mouse from Mack Rides goes to Californian
Knott’s Berry Farm (on the earlier location of the 37
metre high Watersplash “Perilous Plunge”,
demolished after twelve years of operation). Based
on the huge wooden coaster “Ghost Rider”, the the
15 metre high and 400 metre long construction will
apparently be called “Coast Rider”.
Additionally the already completed coaster “Storm”
in 2012 will be inaugurated at the Italian park Etnaland
in April 2013. The track length of the attraction
is 800 metres, and has a height of 32 metres.
Further pending installations for 2013 are a water
coaster for the Chinese Ocean Kingdom, an LSM-
Coaster for Happy Kingdom in China, and a Wild
Mouse and a 1,056 metre long and 38 metre high
Launch Coaster for the Russian Sochi Park Adventureland.
A “Twist & Spin“ will go to La Ronde, Montréal
(a Six Flags park), and a “Splash Battle” will
be erected as the “Vicky The Viking” at the Belgian
Plopsaland de Panne.
Intamin
The Swiss manufacturer Intamin can build on its
more than full order books: amongst others, the 152
metre viewing tower “Top ‘O Texas Tower” for The
The new Wild Mouse from
Mack at Knott’s Berry Farm
Intamin’s viewing tower for
The State Fair of Texas
The preliminary plans for
“Arthur – The Ride” shows that
the new building connects up
directly to the personnel guest
house, and is located on the
other side of the river outside
the current park borders
Park Manager Henrik B.
Nielsen is already thrilled about
his new coaster that will be
unique in Europe
Model and layout of
Intamin’s “Juvelen” at Djurs
Sommerland
State Fair of Texas will be completed by May 2013,
a 35 metre high Coaster-Wheels and a Looping
Coaster for two unnamed Chinese parks, a “Halfpipe”
for the Chinese Victory Kingdom, an LSM-
Coaster for the Taiwanese EDA-World, and the
delivery of three structurally identical 850 metre
long ten-loop constructions are in planning.
European parks will also receive Intamin rides, as
one of the ten-loop rides will go to the new Italian
park Cinecittà World near Rome, together with a 20
metre tall indoor-coaster with freefall sequence.
Five other Intamin attractions will go to new Turkish
Vialand (opening: 23 rd of April): moreover, added to
the three water rides and a Minetrain, Intamin’s
Launch Coaster will without a doubt cause a furore,
as due to space problems the 40 metre high Top
Hat figure will be placed under a 20 metre high cliff!
Another highlight on the European scene is the
opening of a new type of construction in Denmark’s
Djurs Sommerland: Europe’s first coaster with two
catapult segments. Sascha Czibulka from Intamin:
“Park Manager Nielsen was so impressed after a
test ride on ‘Cheetah Hunt’ at Busch Gardens Tampa
that he wanted such a coaster.” One size smaller
and equipped with new types of trains –
with the same seat position as the “Jet
Rescue” coaster at the Australian Sea
World – and it became reality. Henrik B.
Nielsen:”Instead of sitting in a normal
coaster car, you sit in a Quad type vehicle,
with the upper part of your body
completely unrestricted. This is further
reinforced by the special design of the
track with a string of rapid side-to-side
swings and a low track height, which
creates the impression of moving incredibly
fast, close to the ground. It produces
a completely different sensation
of freedom and speed. ‘Juvelen’ is unlike
any other coaster in Europe. I’m sure
we’ll see many more tourists, and set
new visitor records in 2013.”
“Juvelen” has a track length of almost a kilometre
and will be accelerated to up to 85 kilometres per
hour per by a friction drive system. Guests with a
height from 120 centimetres can take their place in
the two trains, comprising of eight two-seat quads.
The attraction will be placed in the 1.2 hectare sized
extended area of the Mexican theme land – and
with the intended Maya-theming with temples,
pyramids, waterfalls and jungle, will no doubt also
be a optical highlight.
Intamin is constructing an indoor coaster with freefall for the
film park Cincittà World near Rome that will open in 2013
Vekoma
We have already reported about most of the
attractions that manufacturer Vekoma from the
Netherlands will be building in 2013 and 2014 in our
previous edition. Additional to these are the following
announcements: in spring 2013 a spectacular
simulation cinema from Brogent/Vekoma will go into
operation. In the Canadian city of Vancouver then,
a very similar Suspended Cinema to the Disney
attraction “Soarin’ Over California” by the name of
“Fly over Canada” will come into being. A further
Suspended Looping Coaster with a standard layout
will be erected in the Iraqi park Al Zaawra in Bagdad.
And in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, a family
coaster is to be installed.
As already announced by Premier Rides and Polin
recently, Vekoma is also involved in the equipping
of the indoor park for the opening of the largest
shopping mall in the world – the Berjaya Great Mall
of China near Peking – and will deliver two coasters.
In addition to a custom designed “Motorbike
Launch Coaster”, there will also be the new type of
attraction, the “Sit Down Looping Coaster Dive
Pretzel”. In all probability it will be a very compact
and vertical coaster that was in actual fact planned
for the Orlando Thrill Park but will be now realized
in a changed form for China as an indoor construction.
Zamperla
It was more the Italian manufacturers who exhibited
the largest ready-to-ride attractions in the
exhibition halls. This year it was a transportable,
eight-arm “Air Race”, produced for Lagoon Park
and also for a Columbian park. Smaller, six-arm
constructions of this type will
be delivered to the Al Hokair
group in Saudi-Arabia, to the
Action Zone in Florida,
Dreamworld in Australia, and
Tivoli in Denmark.
Two examples of the newly
introduced water carousel
“Watermania” will be erected
as “Bath Battle” in the
upcoming season at the company’s
own Coney Island
Park.
Additionally a “MotoCoaster”
from Zamperla by the name of “Speed Shuttle” is
currently under construction for the Chinese park,
Window of the World, in Kaifu. The attraction will be
300 metres long and 3 metres high. A 530 metre
long “Gravity Coaster” will be delivered to OCT
Shenzhen and a Minetrain to the Indian Water Walk
Park. Zamperla will deliver around 100 ride constructions
in 2013.
The new flying cinema
from Vekoma/Brogent will open
in the Canadian city of
Vancouver
The new and double water
ride from Zamperla
“Air Race” caused a lot of
interest among the exhibition
visitors this year
Moser’s Rides announced
multiple sales of this swing
construction
This is the way Alton
Towers brings attention to its
new attraction, whilst a
preliminary layout of the “SW7”
in the internet speaks very
much for a Gerstlauer coaster
Moser’s Rides
Moser had built up a ready-to-ride attraction again
this year. But this time it was a not yet revealed
“Freestyer” that can be found for example also at
Sega World in Tokyo. Each of the two gondolas offer
place for two standing passengers, who reach a
height of up to eight metres in a Swing Boat manner.
Ground measurements for such an attraction are
nine by twelve metres. Four examples have recently
been sold: one each to the Ukraine (Donetsk)
and Indonesia (Mike Holiday), and two to Rio de
Janeiro.
Gerstlauer
As is usual for this manufacturer,
everything was kept secret, but
more and more rumours have
filtered through over the past
weeks that the new mysterious
track attraction for the traditional
Alton Towers is to be a “Eurofighter”
from Gerstlauer. And
naturally a version according to
customer wishes and fitted to
available space conditions – but
more is unknown.
Zierer
China is a booming market that is becoming more
and more important – also for Zierer. And for this
reason there was a lot of effort put into the
requirements and in part different safety standards
of the Chinese CSEI-Norm. For example the arms
of the “Jetski” had to be differently dimensioned to
be approved in China. The success speaks for
itself, and a further number of attractions could be
sold.
Following the successful start of the Vertical Drop
Coaster “Verbolten” at Busch Gardens Williamsburg,
there are seven serious enquiries for this type
of construction – confirmed by Jeroen Nijpels.
But a new coaster is definitely being built for the
Belgian Bellewaerde Park, and in the process Park
Manager Stefaan Lemey is having something very
special produced in the form of the coaster called
“Huracan”, which will be erected in an existing hall.
There apparently will be small Darkride segment
before travelling 15 metres through the seven metre
high hall roof with the lift. After the first drop outside,
the 500 metre track then leads back into the building
where there are fire, sound, and wind effects.
Additionally both 20-seat trains will be equipped
with an onboard sound system. The maximum
speed will be a moderate 50 kilometres per hour,
70

and the capacity will be almost 1,000 passengers
per hour. TAA is responsible for the complete
design, which will be worked around the high
civilization of the Mayas, both inside and out.
Zierer is building a “Kontiki XL” for the Chinese
Chimelong Park with 40 places, and an enlarged
version of a “Flying Fish” with 16 instead of 12 arms
that will be designed as “Flying Dolphins”. The Hello
Kitty Park in Shanghai has ordered a Wave
Turkish Vialand project and will deliver a “Starshape”,
“Wave Swinger” and a “Jetski” to the new
park.
Further along Zierer will erect a double-tower construction
for Liseberg. Both twelve metre high
“Family Freefall Towers” offer the usual freefalls as
well as hopping. The double tower was chosen due
to capacity demand (10 seats twice). The towers
will be each differently designed, one as a crane,
Train design and entrance
for Bellewaerde Park
Metallbau Emmeln is also
delivering a tower to Liseberg
Swinger in an apple tree design, and the Indonesian
park Jaya Ancol in Jarkarta a “Kontiki” in an Ice-
Age-design. And Zierer is also involved in the
the other as a lighthouse. The attraction is one of
seven novelties in the renovated kiddie area called
“Kaninlandet”.
modest for a wooden coaster. Both “Back Track
Family Shuttle” constructions are 15 metres high
and have a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per
hour. As however only a 20-seat train can be used,
the capacity is around 500 passengers per hour.
spectacular new developments
in coaster construction:
Great America
Great Coasters International
Chris Grey was extremely pleased with the course
of this year’s IAAPA-Expo. A lot of attention and
eventually three new contracts came from South
America. Great Coasters has also reacted to the
changed market and has developed two smaller
and therefore cheaper wooden coaster projects.
One is a 240 metre long and seven metre high kiddie
coaster, and the other project is even a world novelty,
because if realized it will be the first Shuttle
Wooden Coaster! Chris Grey: “The idea behind it is
that customers can have a fully fledged coaster with
a lower budget, whilst the 305 metre track course
is travelled over twice – once forwards and once
backwards.” And that has an effect of the required
ground measurements, as 77 by 36 metres is quite
Rocky Mountain Construction
We have already reported in depth about the building
of the first new looping construction out of wood,
which will open in 2013 as the “Outlaw Run” at Silver
Dollar City. And now the American company,
which also has the earlier Arrow-Designer Alan
Schilke under contract, will be equipping an already
existing wooden coaster with a new prefabricated
track bed of steel, and in the process will
undertake significant changes in the track course
also (similar to 2011 with the “Texas Giant” at Six
Flags Over Georgia). The “Rattler” that was erected
at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in 1992 will be
equipped with a breathtaking 81°steep and 52 metre
deep first drop and even an inversion, during the
course of its transformation from a wooden coaster
to a Hybrid Coaster.
EXHIBITION
The Gravity Group
Following the demolition of the unlucky mega
wooden coaster with looping “Son of Beast” at
Kings Island (built 2000), there appears now to be
a new trend for looping-woodies. The Gravity Group
is also busy with such a project – the conversion of
an already available coaster that the company had
built for the Mt. Olympus Park in Wisconsin in 2005.
Park Manager Nick Laskaris wants just to have the
42 metre high and 1,441 metre long “Hades” rebuilt
a 200 metre long sequence, which will make the
attraction slightly longer and the turnaround 12 metres
flatter. It will also contain a 110° angled curve,
a Camelback and a Barrel Roll. In Europe, “Revolution”
would most probably be a more precise term
for this inversion – a Heartline Roll approached from
underneath, resulting in minimum positive g-forces.
As is usual at The Gravity Group, the support will
be of steel, and the tracks of 12-layer wood with
steel overlay will be produced on-site.
The official introduction of
“Outlaw Run” trains with (f.l.t.r.)
Joel Manby and Brad Thomas
(both Hershend Family Entertainment)
and Fred Grubb and
Alan Schilke from RMC
The two variation offers from RMC: left wooden bed with massive steel layer (as
by “Outlaw Run”) and complete prefabricated I-Profile (“Iron Rattler”)
The ten year old wooden coaster “The Rattler” will be replaced by “Iron Rattler”
The Gravity Group will
also realize a Looping Coast of
wood
Brian Morrow, Creative
Director SeaWorld Parks &
Entertainment, introduces the
new attractions for the upcoming
season
The water ride from
Hafema at Toverland will be designed
by TAA accordingly
Hafema
Toverland in the Netherlands will also invest strongly
in 2013, in a rafting construction from Hafema.
Nine boats will be used on the 450 metre round
course. The height difference between the start and
finish will be five and half metres. The theming will
stem from TAA.
Oceaneering
For the first time a vehicle was presented to the public
that will be used in the future on the attraction
“Antarctica, Empire of the Penguin”
at SeaWorld Orlando. The
new development from the
Canadian manufacturer came
about due to close cooperation
with the SeaWorld staff, and
functions completely without
tracks whilst the eight-seat cars
rotation is freely at 360°. The
special characteristic is also that although there will
only be one loading platform, two different track
sections will be available. Passengers may choose
between a family adventure, or one with more thrill
in the inhospitable surroundings of the icy-cold
continent.
For SeaWorld Orlando it’s the largest single investment
in its history. The new attraction will be embedded
in a theme area that contains a restaurant,
a souvenir shop and a penguin habitat. The location
is in the centre of the park where an ecorestaurant
was located earlier.
ETF
The manufacturer from the Netherlands offers a
very similar new development for e.g. Darkrides
that can do even more: the trackless six-seat vehicles
that were also presented in Orlando can not
only travel backwards and forwards and rotate, but
can also carry out lift and decent movements in
order to combine recorded imagines with ride
movement.
In addition, Ruud Koppens announced the involvement
in ten projects in 2013, among them a Darkride
for each of the Legoland Discovery Centres in
New York and Ontario, and further attractions for
Turkey, Norway, France, Dubai and South Korea.
Moreover the Swedish park Liseberg has ordered
a “ Panorama Pedal Plus” which will be a part of the
new kiddie land “Kaninlandet”
And the subsidiary firm of the Canadian company
Empire Industries also offers a trackless led vehicle
for use for example on Darkride attractions. Its all
weather AGVs (Automatic Guided Vehicles) have a
very compact structure as basic feature, but can
be delivered with an optional 2-DOF-Motionplatform,
in order to be able to undertake complete
rotations as well as electronic (not hydraulic) up
and down movements. Versions with four to 30 seat
vehicles are possible, and orientation takes place
through laser led navigation. According to Harold
Hudson, three systems will be realised – one for
China, the Middle East and Europe.
Although Dynamic Attractions has appeared as an
independent leisure technology manufacturer only
since a year, the company is not unknown as
subcontractor within the branch. From time
immemorial it has completed tracks for Premier
Rides and has also worked together with Disney
and Universal, for example as mainly responsible
manufacturer in the cases
of “Test Track” (Epcot), “Radiator
Springs Racers”
(Disney’s California Adventure),
“Soarin’ Over California”
(in two Disney-Parks)
and “Harry Potter and the
Forbidden Journey” (Universal
Islands of Adventure).
Currently – among
others – two “Soarin’” cinemas
for a Chinese park and
a “Harry Potter” attraction
with KUKA-robot arms for
Universal Studios Japan
(2014) and Universal
Studios Hollywood (2014/
15) are being realized.
Since only recently the Japanese company Sansai
Yusoki is the new owner of S&S, which was
previously in the hands of a private-equity-group.
Not only is the contract situation good (Launch
Coaster for the new Chinese park in Guangrao, an
“El Loco”-Coaster for Circus in Las Vegas, and a
Freefall Tower for each of the Chinese parks in
Suzhou und in Ningbo, for Dream Park in Mumbai,
for the Italian Etnaland and a 70 metre high new
development in a 20-seat round gondola for the
Olympia park in Russia’s Sochi), but there are also
many ideas and concepts.
For example the further development of the – up
until now -only realized “Free Fly” Wing Coaster at
Sweden’s Skara Sommarland. Under the name of
“Free Fly X”, free swinging suspended gondolas
are offered that can also somersault on the
corresponding track course. And the in the
meantime successful “X” concept, which was developed
originally by Arrow and its designer Alan
A new interpretation of a
round ride from KAF Production
and Chance Rides (right)
The “Starflyer” for the
Steel Pier in Atlantic City
Schilke, is to be extended as an alternative, in that
now short trains (each for eight passengers) with
freely swinging double gondolas are also on offer.
However this ride pattern reminds one a lot more of
an Intamin “Zac Spin” coaster than a “4 th Dimension
Coaster” with a third track that is responsible for the
rotation of the seat rows.
KAF Production
An interesting variation of a centrifula seesaw like a
“Hopser” was presented by the South Korean firm.
The double row, fast rotating passenger carrier will
be installed in front of a 180° screen as indoor
attraction, and offers without a doubt an action-rich
ride experience.
Chance Rides
A very compact transportable major ride comes
from the US manufacturer Chance Rides. A 24
passenger carrier rotates at fast 24 revolutions per
minute and is brought into a 65° steep position. The
passenger view is always towards outside, which
without a doubt releases interesting and extreme
centrifugal forces. But there’s not much more that
happens.
Additionally the sale of a 60 metre high Ferris Wheel
to Pigeon Forge in Seattle was announced.
Steelman Partners
The architectural offices located in Las Vegas is
mainly specialised in the design of casinos and
theme parks. And here also there’s a lot going on in
the Asiatic area, for example the complete planning
of the mega-resort Galaxy Macau and the Happyland
Resort in Vietnam.
However, as is known, Steelman Partners has also
taken over the renovation and restructuring of the
historic Steel Pier in Atlantic City (US State of New
Jersey). The first large change could be seen from
May 2012 ( see KPR 9/2012). But in the upcoming
years there is also quite a lot planned, for example
the erection of 117 metre high “Starflyer“ from Funtime
in 2013, and a “Zac Spin“ coaster from Intamin
in 2014.
Ride Entertainment
The Austrian manufacterer Funtime was only
indirectly present at the exhibition (even though the
boss Walter Pondorfer was in Orlando personally),
in the form of being the American representative of
Ride Entertainment. The biggest novelty for the upcoming
year will be the highest chain ride of all
times. Officially the proud operator Six Flags Over
Texas has announced a height of 121 metres. Sister-park
Six Flags Over Georgia will also receive a
„Starflyer“, however with a height of only 73 metres.
One of the most innovative water slide manufacturers
is the American firm SplashTacular. New for the
upcoming season is the “DownUnder” attraction. In
this case six pipe slides make their start at a 70 foot
high platform via trapdoors. The sliders can be
started either individually, simultaneously, or in a
revolver rhythm.
Two constructions of this type have been ordered
at the same time by Six Flags: for Six Flags America
in Maryland and Six Flags New England in Massachusetts,
operating under the name of “Bonsai
Pipelines”.
COASTER
A speedy but family
friendly track course
characterises this Disney
attraction also
Disneyland Hong Kong opened
in 2005, and when compared to
the other four existing parks,
was the smallest of them all. The
reason was that the Disney concern,
or rather its partner in
Hong Kong had not taken future
visitors from Mainland China
into consideration, but had only
concentrated on Hong Kong residents
and tourists to the city,
when making plans and development.
The fact that this had been
a miscalculation was shown
shortly after the opening, as already
only two years later, the
park was bordering on its maximum
capacity. An extension
therefore was pre-programmed.
Not only was a complete theme area missing, but
also significant main attractions at other Disney
parks, among them for example the family coaster
“Big Thunder Mountain Railway”, the boat ride
“Pirates of the Caribbean” or the water ride “Splash
Mountain”. In order to increase the capacity for
visitors a master plan was submitted, which instead
of integrating further attractions into the already
existing themed sections was designed for a complete
enlargement of the entire park. Three small
areas were to be erected north of “Fantasyland”,
which although are not comparable in size to
customary theme areas, each apparently was to
have its own large attraction. The completion of the
new attractions was planned to be in three phases.
In 2011 “Toy Story Land” was opened, in which,
similar to Paris, the Halfpipe-Coaster “RC Racer”
from Intamin plays a main role.
This year the second building phase was
completed with the extension of the “Grizzly
Gulch” area. The lack of a Wild West theme at
Disneyland Hong Kong has now been a little
compensated for by this area. Nevertheless
visitors do not find a typical Wild West city here,
but a small American area: the Yellowstone Park
in California – and it’s the geysers have been
particularly well put into the scene. The only
attraction here is the “Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway
Mine Cars” from Vekoma. The ride is the
third roller coaster at Disneyland Hong Kong
and is similar to others at parks within the
Disney group due to its design and family
friendliness.
All the same the Chinese version is a novelty in
this sector, due to its unique combination of various
elements: a normal indoor chain lift,
78

away Mine Cars
The train makes its way into a
mine shaft. A set of points begin
to move to lead the train onto
another course section. It’s
another chain lift that actually ends “nowhere” in order
to allow the train to speed backwards, and its
final sequence.
But one thing after the other: after baggage items
have been stowed in the pockets of the seat rows
and the restraints have been put on, the ride fun
can begin. After a short sequence, during which
time ride guests can admire the artificial canyon
landscape, the train climbs the indoor chain lift
comfortably cool and a little dark – the train stands.
And now ride guests hear a countdown, and out of
the neighbouring tunnel there’s a cracking sound,
dust shoots past the mine cars, which was caused
by a detonation. Then another bang can be heard,
and the coaster is catapulted out of the mine. The
train travels forwards again at a high speed past the
geysers and around the rocks until arriving at the
starting point again after a bridge.
slowly, during After the highest
point of the “Grizzly Mountain”
has been reached, the ride
accelerates and winds around
the rock formation. The attraction
is then pulled up the mountain a
second time and remains standing
for a short moment, when
without warning the cable of the
flywheel located to the left that
appears to have pulled the train
up high, just snaps. Too late –
suddenly the coaster starts moving
again, but this time backwards,
and travels through narrow
curves close to the ground
and through the bizarre cratered
landscape of Yellowstone.
The tracks lead through
a number of tunnels and over
bridges, and make guest
interaction possible
79

Despite family
friendliness, exciting drops
naturally can’t be missing
The launch course is
located in a tunnel
Tunnels and bridges make a track course possible
that also involves all viewers in the happenings, with
the result that the guests follow the breathtaking
attraction from Vekoma with inquisitive looks.
Additionally there are up to three track sections next
to each other, so that from time to time three trains
can meet up.
Typical of Disney, individual track sections have
been enriched by lovely and technically excellent
animatronics. The bears in the mine consider the
ride guests as intruders in their mountain world,
shown by the illuminated mother bear. The animatronics
in combination with the mining landscape
remind one a little of the very popular “Splash
Mountain”, the theme of which is little known in
Europe as it pertains to an older film production that
enjoys a certain degree of familiarity only in the
Northern America.
The third and last building phase of the park
extension will be completed in the spring of 2013,
when the small and Asian-like theme area “Mystic
Point” will open. As the large attraction “Phantom
Manor” a Darkride with an endless system is also
missing from the current park, the same ride system
will be adapted, but with a totally different storyline.
“Mystic Point” will be all about an expedition undertaken
by a globetrotter.
Just how both the new concepts will find their way
into the planned Disney Park in Shanghai is still
uncertain, as not all details have been revealed
about the park currently under construction on
Mainland China
TOP ACT
The castle of the pirate
lady “Mediterranea”
Opened in 1971, Minitalia Leolandia
is a very beautiful small
park located near Capriate, not
too far from Milan and Bergamo.
Its main feature, as its name suggests,
is a large scaled reproduction
of the Italian peninsula.
Guests can walk through each
region and admire some of the
most popular and some of the
least known monuments and
natural wonders of Italy. Among
these perfect 1:50 scaled reproductions,
it is also possible
to learn about the people who
made the history of this country,
making it famous all over the
world.
Text & Fotos: Matteo Crepaldi
Mediterranea
The rest of the park, instead, features rides and
attractions for the whole family and is divided
into five themed areas with different subjects and
features. One is dedicated to the Old West called
“Cowboy Town”, one to Leonardo Da Vinci, called
“Leonardo’s Lands”, one to the international
exposition which took place in Milan in 1906 called
“Expo 1906”, one including the miniature park and
a small zoo called “Minitalia & Animals” and finally,
one dedicated to pirates called “Pirates’ Bay”.
Before moving on to the main topic, it is important
to recall that Minitalia Leolandia was owned from
2007 until 2010 by Zamperla. This explains why all
the attractions in the park are made by this
important Italian manufacturer. This fact did not
change for the newest addition: “Mediterranea”, a
Splash Battle type of ride located in the “Pirates’
Bay” area.
The attraction is a “Splash
Battle” from Zamperla
82

TOP ACT
The treasure is defended
with the water cannons
According to the ride’s storyline, “Mediterranea” is
the name of a fearsome lady pirate who owns a
secret treasure hidden inside her castle, which is
now under attack by the float of the Italian Marine
Republics.
Unfortunately for them, this attack will never be successful
because the guests of Minitalia Leolandia
are secretly embarked among the crews of the Italian
ships to turn the (water) cannons against the
other ships to save the treasure.
Overall, “Mediterranea” is a good addition for Minitalia
Leolandia, and a very nice ride for the whole
family. The theming, which will be completed for the
next season, is already impressive: the ride
vehicles are perfect representations of the Marine
Republic’s ships, and “Mediterranea’s” castle is
really well made. We just have to wait for next
season 2013 to fully enjoy this already great
experience.
■
A fee is required for the
use of the water cannons in the
outside area
Hidden in Darkride Section
The preparation for the battle starts inside
“Mediterranea’s” castle with a small Darkride
section featuring the secret treasure
room, which will be ready for the next season.
Once outside, the layout is typical of a
Splash Battle with four hairpin turns that
place the boats in front of each other to let
the guests shoot water to each other. Unlike
other rides of this kind, there are no targets
on the theming triggering special effects,
but is just a battle between guests on the
different boats and those on the outside who
can use other water cannons to increase the
level of wetness of the ride.
The bad news about the water weapons outside
the ride is that they cost money to be
operated, but the good news is that the minimum
cost is only 0,40 Euro.
Fritz Kinzler
Unser aufrichtiges Mitgefühl gilt seiner Familie.
