Protect yourself
from seasonal flu
Advice from NHS Islington
skills for free
As we brace ourselves for
wintry weather, we should
also be taking precautions
against the flu virus that
comes with the cold and wet.
Seasonal flu is the
common strain of flu that
spreads throughout the
community each winter.
Whereas many people can
fight the flu with lots of
rest and fluids, it can be
more dangerous for
certain groups.
So, if you’re over 65, or
if you have a long-term
health condition like asthma,
heart disease or diabetes,
we recommend you get the
seasonal flu jab. You can get
it for free from your GP or
from many pharmacies in
the borough. Even if you had
the jab last year, you need
to get it again this winter to
ensure you’re protected. The
seasonal flu jab will not offer
protection against swine
flu, but a separate swine flu
vaccination will be offered
soon. Your GP will contact
you directly if you need the
sine flu jab as a priority.
both strains of flu, visit
Adults from across the
borough have been
enrolling on free council-run
education courses.
There is a particular focus
on helping people through
the recession, with many of
this year’s courses designed
to help people budget and
plan their careers. With these
skills, residents can be in a
stronger position to take
advantage of opportunities
when things pick up.
As the new term kicked off,
last year’s learners celebrated
their success at their annual
achievement event.
One resident who picked
up a certificate was Emma
Suzanne Barry is one of the many
residents who has enrolled onto
one of the new, free courses
McMullins. She took courses
in Maths, ICT and Creative
Writing. She said: “My maths
course was fantastic. I
looked forward to the class
all week. I always thought I
was terrible at maths, but I
can now work out the bills,
sales and interest rates, and I
don’t worry. I can also explain
things to my daughter and
help her with her homework.”
If you are unemployed
or on a low income,
you could be eligible
for free adult education
courses. Find out more
New discounts for carers
As the Time Out guide with this
issue shows, there is a massive
variety of local businesses
that we can all help support.
And for carers in Islington,
new discounts offer an
added incentive to stay
local.
Residents who are registered as
a carer with Islington Council can
now use their Carers Emergency
Card to take advantage of of
discounts and offers at places
such as Angel Chiropody,
D’s Beauty Parlour and Frank
Godfrey butchers. With
the card, you can also borrow more
books from Islington libraries and
avoid some library fees and
charges.
To register for a carer’s card,
you need to have had a carer’s
needs assessment within the
last 12 months, be aged 16 or
over and be looking after an Islington
resident who is aged 18 or over.
To find out more or
request a carer’s needs
assessment, call Islington Carers’
Centre on 020 7263 9080 and
ask for Asiatou.
Celebrating Older
People’s Day
The borough’s liveliest
older residents
celebrated Older
People’s Day in style!
Last month, hundreds of
perky pensioners headed
to St Luke’s Community
Centre in EC1 to try out
giant knitting, computer
sessions, gardening and
pottery. The event was
opened by Islington’s
82-year-old Mayor,
Cllr Anna Berent.
June Cook (left) and Eleanor Cooper and
their giant knitting needles
