Giant Green winners
The great and the green were
out in force at Islington’s
Giant Green Business Awards
2009, which celebrated the
businesses and individuals that
are doing their bit to keep the
borough green.
Prizes were handed out to
companies and organisations,
and bright ideas that won
praise included a project to turn
a car park into allotments and
a supermarket that lends cycle
trailers to customers for their
shopping.
The event was hosted by
TV presenter Chris Packham,
who praised the efforts of
businesses and the
council to help protect the
environment. He said: “I would
like to champion the fact that
so many businesses, large and
small, have done so much. The
fact they are on board and
actively involved is absolutely
brilliant.”
This year we introduced the
People’s Choice Award, a new
category for residents to vote
in. The winner was Unpackaged,
a unique organic grocery
in Amwell Street that sells
products without packaging.

Energy health checks
for your home
As well as more energy
meters being available
for residents to borrow,
our eager energy
doctors are taking to
the streets and now
visiting homes to offer
your property a free
energy health check!
Cutting back on the energy
you use in your home not only
reduces CO 2 emissions – it
also eases the strain on your
wallet. And to get tips on how
to stop wasting energy, just
call the doctor!
Our two new specially
trained Energy Doctors are
now visiting residents in their
homes to help install simple
energy-saving measures like
draught excluders, energyefficient
light bulbs and
radiator panels, which reflect
heat back into the room.
They’ll also continue to be
on hand around the borough
to dish out valuable advice
on reducing energy use in
your home, such as turning

Flush out extra costs
Water bills can make up a significant part of your household budget.
With a few simple steps, you can make sure you’re not paying too
much. For starters, turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. You
could also look at installing a ‘hippo’ water-saving device in the
cistern. This can save up to a litre of water each flush! And if there
are fewer than three people in your household, it may be cheaper
to have your water metered than paying the standard charge.
