The study of material sciences, complex biological
systems and very rapid chemical reactions
provides the basis for developing highly innovative
materials, pharmaceuticals and industrial
processes. Similar challenges and opportunities
are provided by basic research in the field of
lasers, with their new application areas and fields
of use. In addition to the latest applications for
laser technology, the experts will also be presenting
Italy’s scientific and industrial contribution
to XFEL, one of the largest scientific projects in
Europe.

The Italian-German Centre Villa Vigoni was
founded in the late 1980’s thanks to the commitment
of the governments of Germany and
Italy to become a place of cultural exchanges
between the two countries. The centre is chaired
by Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Kieven and Ambassador
Umberto Vattani since 2005.

Round table organised by the Villa Vigoni
The participation of Villa Vigoni at the Hannover
Messe in 2010, the world’s leading showcase
for industrial technology, with Italy as this
year’s official Partner Country, is part of a wider
policy focusing on trade relations between Italy
and Germany. The Italian participation was initiated
and implemented by the Italian Institute of
Foreign Trade ICE under its current president Ambassador
Umberto Vattani. His invitation to participate
was followed by Prof. Dr. Gregor Vogt-
Spira, secretary general of the Italian-German
institution Villa Vigoni, who will be present at the
Hannover Messe at a round table dedicated to
the subject of sustainable mobility.
Mobility is what moves us in every sense. How
can we achieve sustainable mobility, decisive
technical changes and changes in our behaviour
as quickly as possible, particularly in the urban
realm? Technical solutions for preventing the
impending climate collapse will be discussed,
ranging from new drive systems to CO 2
geo-engineering.
Considerable expectations are currently
being placed on electric motors. But is electromobility
really the right solution for achieving
sustainability? What are the alternatives?

Sustainable development satisfies the needs of the
current generation, without limiting the coming
generation in terms of satisfying their needs. The
concept of sustainable mobility, on the other hand,
is concerned with a system of urban mobility that
enables everyone to exercise their right to mobility
but is so designed that social and environmental
systems are not overly burdened. The seminar offers
approaches for developing new instruments
and presents solutions that already exist today.
