Blue shark (Prionace glauca)<br />

Distribution: Worldwide in temperate to tropic<strong>al</strong> regions.<br />

Habitat: Offshore. Mostly taken in pelagic fisheries.<br />

<strong>Fi</strong>rst dors<strong>al</strong> fin description<br />

- Rounded apex with convex<br />

trailing edge.<br />

- <strong>Fi</strong>n color is dark grey to dark<br />

greyish-brown.<br />

- Moderate free rear tip.<br />

-Leading edge has a very sh<strong>al</strong>low<br />

angle.<br />

Similar species: The first dors<strong>al</strong> fins of silky and night sharks are similar in shape, but are<br />

a lighter brown or greyish-brown in color. Bignose shark first dors<strong>al</strong> fins (not included in this guide<br />

due to lack of sufficient samples for comparison) are similar in size and shape, but like the silky and<br />

night sharks, are <strong>al</strong>so light grey or greyish-brown color.<br />
