White shark (Carcharodon carcharias)<br />

Distribution: Widely distributed. Most common in temperate regions but <strong>al</strong>so found in tropics.<br />

Habitat: Inshore and offshore. Mostly in coast<strong>al</strong> fisheries, possibly in pelagic fisheries.<br />

Pector<strong>al</strong> fin description<br />

The dors<strong>al</strong> side of the fin is<br />

dark brown or greyish-brown<br />

in color. Black markings at the<br />

apex are only visible on the<br />

ventr<strong>al</strong> surface. The trailing<br />

edge of the fin is often ragged<br />

in appearance. The free rear tip<br />

has a white margin on the<br />

trailing edge of the dors<strong>al</strong><br />

surface.<br />

Similar species: Sc<strong>al</strong>loped hammerhead, blacktip and spinner pector<strong>al</strong> fins <strong>al</strong>so have black<br />

markings concentrated at the apex on the ventr<strong>al</strong> surface. Sc<strong>al</strong>loped hammerheads have much<br />

shorter, broader fins, while blacktip and spinners have a glossy sheen on the dors<strong>al</strong> surface.<br />
